On August 17, 2012 Molly Dilworth will begin work on Date the Time, as part of Recess’s signature program, Session. Session invites artists to use Recess’s public space as studio, exhibition venue and grounds for experimentation. For Date the Time, Dilworth will create a series of banners and flags, bearing patterns generated from user-submitted photos. Addressing digital content using traditional folk art techniques, Dilworth will distill issues of labor and consumer rights from unexpected sources.

Spencer Brownstone Gallery is pleased to present ‘Control Over Nature’, an exhibition by Tessa Farmer in collaboration with an acoustical installation by Amon Tobin. For her second show at the gallery, Tessa has teamed up with Amon Tobin to mark his September 14th performance at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom. With his groundbreaking audio/visual live show ISAM 2.0, the electronic music pioneer joined forces with Farmer for an extraordinary collaborative installation combining his sound design and elements from ‘ISAM’, alongside Farmer’s trademark sculptures (constructed from bits of organic material, such as roots, dead insects and bones). Hovering with a rarefied, jewel-like beauty, Tessa’s tiny spectacles resound with a theurgist exotica: their specimen forms evolve as something alien and futuristic. The collaboration perfectly captures the themes surrounding ‘ISAM’: sensory deprivation, disorienting situationism and the mechanization of natural things.

SurroundSound grunts and groans punctuate accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen’s dance-theater work in which music, sport, and dance blend into a unique multimedia “squeeze play.” Reviving the dormant Finnish tradition of accordion-accompanied wrestling matches, Pohjonen performs while grapplers struggle on a custom-made mat embedded with microphones. His work, with choreography by Ari Numminen, comments on Cold War and gender politics while lending a modern artistic twist to a classic Olympic competition.

Under the Mattress is a solo exhibition of works by Billy Frey. The collages are done by hand using original vintage materials and imagery, primarily from magazines fromt he 1930′s to the 80′s. With bold and often complex patterns of re-appropriated images, he offers us tales that are humorous, dark disturbing, playful, perverse, and fantastical. Frey is heavily influenced by classic film, comic book art, cartoons, surrealist film and literature. The collages represent a fusion of times past and present, creating an environment where time is non-linear. Within our minds, it is happening all at once. A place where the 30′s and the 60′s can do a dance together, unaware of the fact that time has already come and gone.

Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to present All the money IS in the label by Brooklyn based artist Alex Gingrow. For her first solo exhibition, Alex Gingrow presents dozens of obsessively rendered drawings on paper loaded with cutting, antagonistic humor and a quick trigger finger pointed at the heart of the art world. Over the past five years while working at a midtown frame shop, the artist has collected snippets of sordid conversations overheard from chief art world players as well as from peers working at entry- level positions within art institutions. The resulting works are incredibly revealing, and often baiting epitaphs of insider conversations, reified and displayed, ironically within a frame. With a snarky, sharp wit and a healthy dose of self-deprecation, Gingrow implicates all levels of the “establishment” including Gagosian, Hirst and Warhol, the New Museum and even our own Mike Weiss Gallery.

All who want to participate, or who bear witness to one of the greatest New York City literary spectcles are invited to gather in front of Just Lorraine’s Place at 8:00 PM with poem in hand or heart. After Featured Poets April Jones, Matthew Hupert, Robert Gibbons and Zev Torres open up the ceremonies, there will be an open mic, followed by drinks. Then we’ll take a short walk to the next venue where we’ll recite more poetry, imbibe a little more and move on once again. Giehler is known for his geometric abstractions, influenced by futuristic universes, and finished with mathematical precision. Institute_Institut FOCUS WORKSHOP #5: the self and its image
The Panoply Performance Laboratory
What is an individual? What is an “institution”? Using live-feed video that allows kids (and parents) to see themselves move onscreen in real time, we will explore the place where our selves are often asked to “feed” into structures such as school, work, and family. Kids/parents may play an interactive game that examines the mechanics of institutional engagement and invites subjective critical analysis of any current institutional relationships that the participants may have. Smaller kids may choose to play with their own image and their endlessly repeating, smaller and smaller images continuing off into the distance.

Part radical think tank, part focus group, part physical workshop, the Panoply Performance Laboratory invites participants to discuss their relationships with institutions, and focus on the role(s) that institutions play, both as groups of individuals and as emergent entities, through group exercises. Each participant will also have the opportunity to make an individual public statement on video for inclusion in PPL’s 2011 documentary opera, Institute_Institut (and will get a free ticket to PPL’s final performances.)

Between Dec. 2010 and June 2011, PPL is conducting a series of Focus Workshops, investigating cultural structures, interpersonal politics, daily conceptions of reality, and institutional ecologies through group discussion, performance work, and co-creation.
A Focus Workshop is part focus group and part thinktank. “Workshop” is used to note the performance-based perspective held by the workshop facilitators (the artists creating the project) and the performance research direction that some workshops take, depending on the interests of the participants.
Part I: Group Discussion. What are institutions? How do they function in your life? What are some of your experiences with them?
Part 2: Enactions, observations, and games.
All participants will receive a free ticket to the performances of Institute_Institut, in Fall 2011. The project is a staged documentary opera about authority, reality, institutionality, and sensibility. Issues and ideas discussed and researched through these Focus Workshops, as well as selected experiences, statements, and documentation from them (and many other forms of research) will largely form the libretto.

Desde el mes de diciembre 2010 a junio 2011, PPL ha estado realizando una serie de talleres informativos en Brooklyn, Manhattan y Queens. Los talleres investigan las estructuras culturales, las políticas mediativas, las construcciones diarias de la realidad, y las ecologías institucionales.
Se hace un llamado a personas de todas las edades y nacionalidades que quieran participar y contribuir con sus opiniones, experiencias e ideas en los talleres creativo-informativos. Los resultados serán incluidos como parte de colaboración en el proyecto Institute_Institut.
El Grupo de Enfoque funcionara también como fuente de inspiración y creación. En este sentido, “Taller” se refiere al aspecto performativo realizado por los artistas que facilitan la creación del proyecto y dirigen la investigación del mismo en base a los intereses de cada participante.

Las ideas y conceptos que fueron discutidos e investigados durante los talleres de enfoque de grupo, así como las experiencias, declaraciones y documentación de los participantes, serán incluidos como parte del libreto.

ABOUT EDGAR OLIVER:
Edgar Oliver started performing in New York at the Pyramid in the mid-1980′s alongside artists including Hapi Phace, Kembra Pfahler, Samoa and playwright Kestutis Nakas. As a playwright, many of Oliver’s plays have been staged at La MaMa and other downtown NYC theatres, including The Seven Year Vacation,The Poetry Killer, Hands in Wartime,Motel Blue 19 and Mosquito Succulence. As a stage actor, he has performed in countless plays including Edward II with Cliplight Theater, Marc Palmieri’s Carl the Second, Lipsynka’s Dial M for Modeland numerous productions at Axis including Trinity 5:29, A Glance at New York (Edinburgh Festival Fringe & NYC), Julius Caesar, USS Frankenstein, the Hospital series, Seven in One Blow, or the Brave Little Kid and the one-man show East 10th Street: Self Portrait with Empty House (written by Edgar & directed by Randy Sharp — Edinburgh Festival Fringe & NYC). Edgar is also one of the most beloved storytellers at The Moth. His film roles include That’s Beautiful Frank, Henry May Long(directed by Axis’ Randy Sharp) and Gentlemen Broncos (directed by Jared Hess). His published works include A Portrait of New York by a Wanderer There and Summer (published by oilcan press); and The Man Who Loved Plants (published by Panther Books and available at Goodie.org).
