Born in 1967, Louis CK got his start in comedy after moving to New York City in 1989 and appearing on as many of the numerous televised comedy programs being shot in the city as possible. Soon making short films and touring the country on the comedy circuit, CK got his start in television as one of the original writers for the wildly irreverent Conan O’Brien Show when it premiered in 1993. Masterminding such long-running skits as the “Staring Contest” and “Actual Items” (some of which continued to appear regularly, years after his departure), CK continued to make short films as he later worked for The Late Show with David Letterman and The Dana Carvey Show, all the while gaining popularity as a talented comedian. B.C. EDWARDS lives in Brooklyn. He is the recipient of the 2011 Hudson Prize put out by Black Lawrence Press which will be publishing his collection of short fiction, The Aversive Clause in 2012 and his collection of poetry From the Standard Cyclopedia of Recipes in 2013. His work can be found in Red Line Blues, The Sink Review, Food-i-Corp, Hobart and others. His short story “Illfit” is being adapted into a piece by the Royal Ballet of Flanders. BEN FAMA is the author of the chapbook Aquarius Rising (UDP 2009) and NEW WAVES (Minutes Books). He is the founding editor of Supermachine Poetry Journal. His work has been featured in GlitterPony, notnostrums, LIT, Poor Claudia, and on the Best American Poetry Blog, among others. He has contributed tips to gawker, words to urban dictionary, and has an ongoing correspondence with Lady Gaga. ELY SHIPLEY’s first book, Boy with Flowers, won the 2007 Barrow Street Press book prize judged by Carl Phillips, the 2009 Thom Gunn Award, and was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. His writing appears in the Western Humanities Review, Prairie Schooner, Diagram, Gulf Coast, and elsewhere. He holds a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Utah and currently teaches at Baruch College, CUNY. Hosted by Angelo Nikolopoulos $7 cover includes a house drink.

Odysseus at Hell Gate Performance @Socrates Sculpture Park
RESCHDEULED: AUGUST 29, FROM 6PM UNTIL DUSK.
Processional Arts Workshop joins with local volunteers to transform Socrates Sculpture Park into a kinetic installation that explores the history of New York’s forgotten islands through the lense of Homeric myth. Integrating performing objects, micro-parades, and cyclical performances. Odysseus at Hell Gate pairs texts from the Odyssey with historic accounts of North Brother Island, Hart Island, Mill Rock, and other forgotten places in the city’s maritime shadowlands. Park visitors will assume the role of the homeward-bound hero, using fragmentary charts and haphazard guidance to navigate the capricious currents of New York’s complex island history, from potter’s grounds to pleasure parks to penitentiaries. There is no order or sequence, as characters appear and disappear throughout the park, leaving lost mariners free to wander through a shifting immersive narrative. Odysseus at Hell Gate runs continuously throughout the Park, from 5 to 8 PM.

Axis Company’s episodic play Hospital, about the interior life of a person in a terminal coma, is something of a signature for the company, which has produced a new installment of the drama nearly every year since 1997. Conceived, written and directed by Randy Sharp the show is a summer downtown phenomenon beloved for its balance of horror, humor, and weirdness. The company will present the 11th production in the series July 8 – August 20.
While most audience members return to see multiple, if not all four, parts of the summer’s production, each episode is a self-contained short play that can be seen in isolation. The brief premise film that begins each year’s production—depicting the event that brought on the coma—is shown at the beginning of each performance.

The Booklyn Art Gallery is pleased to present Hunter/Gatherer, featuring works by Evan Robarts, Jason Kachadourian, Jessica Williams, Jon Bocksel and Scott Meyers.
Hunter/Gatherer includes artists with the common practice of borrowing both aesthetic inspirations and found objects from their local surroundings. These artists accumulate visual, physical, and conceptual source material from everyday encounters and observations. They manipulate materials and appropriate techniques from discarded objects, sign-painting and murals, printed ephemera, and urban architecture. While each artist has their own unique approach to collecting and manipulating, their work evokes similar appreciations for the found and overlooked. With their work combined, Hunter/Gatherer creates a personal map of the city they share and the scenery they encounter. The viewer is confronted by these recognizable, yet often ignored images and encouraged to take a second look when walking down the street.

Minor but pleasing Rossellini, set in a small town in Southern Italy thrown into a tizzy by the machinations of a mysterious old man. Saint or devil, he endows a camera with the power not merely to kill people, but to ferret out sources of wealth. Cue for a flurry of treachery and greed, all casually swept under the carpet in a final pirouette. The neo-realist techniques don’t always mix too comfortably with the fantasy, making it an Ealing comedy with an edifying bent.

During October 2009 Sarah Anne Johnson participated in an artist’s residency on board a double masted schooner in the Norwegian territory of the Arctic Circle. Each of the twelve days at sea the group visited a different site on land, ranging from untouched vistas of pure landscape to abandoned mining camps. She photographed what she saw, which became the basis for her new body of work entitled “Arctic Wonderland.”
She described the experience as “amazing, it was exotic, breathtakingly beautiful and sublime. It seemed so pristine and perfect, vast and strong, but also somehow delicate and fleeting. After such an experience, one can’t help speculating about the impact we have on this planet.
We are in the process of creating irreparable damage to the earth and will soon have no choice but to gamble on increasingly dubious theories. A favorite theory of engineers as a last resort to stop global warming is the blocking out of the sun. With this body of work I have been assessing and questioning western ideas of progress, growth and innovation. What are we progressing toward? Where does innovation lead us? How big can we go? What will it mean for us to take over the sun? Not only for the environment, but also psychologically for us, what will that mean?
To explore these concerns I have painted, photo shopped, embossed and used printmaking on the photographs I took during the expedition. I do this to create a more honest image. To show not just what I saw, but how I feel about what I saw.”
The imagery is celebratory with an ironic underside. Fireworks, confetti, cheerleaders and banners inhabit the landscape. Wonderland has the double meaning of referring to the brilliant beauty of the landscape, but also the absurdity of some of the notions of how to colonize this place.
“Arctic Wonderland” will be Sarah Anne Johnson’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, the first being “Tree Planting” in 2005 which was recently exhibited at the Guggenheim in “Haunted: recent acquisitions in photography and video”. Each of her exhibitions has been conceived as an installation and has been acquired in their entirety by a public museum, including the Guggenheim, Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada. This is the first project that is comprised of free standing independent works.
Johnson lives and works in Winnipeg, Canada and received her MFA from Yale University. She was the recipient of the first Annual Grange prize. Her work has been exhibited and collected by numerous public institutions as noted above.
