Friends and colleagues since 1988, Ikue Mori and Zeena Parkins are two of the strongest musical voices out of the downtown scene. Lynchpins of bands as diverse as DNA, Skeleton Crew, Electric Masada, Hemophiliac and Björk, each have been leading figures of the downtown scene since the early 1980s, and their collaboration, Phantom Orchard is the perfect outlet for their unique and personal musical languages. Tonight, Phantom Orchard presents duo arrangements of work from their most recent album,Trouble in Paradise (Tzadik), featuring Mori on live visuals and electronics and Parkins on harps, keyboard, and celesta.
The latest work from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, love fail marries evocative new music with timeless storytelling to tell a tale of love both found and unfulfilled, performed by the ravishing voices of legendary early music group Anonymous 4.
Three Colorists, curated by Michael Walls, highlights the work of three artists who have several things in common: they began their professional life as painters; the oeuvre of each importantly involves the role of color; and the work of each is not only labor intensive, but also revealing of a hard-won mastery of the chosen craft.
It’s the last show before we move to our new location at 29 Jay Street! What better way to say goodbye to 38 Water Street than with our 14th annual Labapalooza Festival? This year’s line-up of works-in-progress ranges from the traditional to the irreverent, from the ground breaking to the nostalgic, and from delightful to downright punk-rock.

Modesty in art is over-rated, as anyone with a Schnabel complex knows, so be prepared for the challenge of ascertaining the significance of what these artists have been cooking up over the past four months. Yes, each can draw, paint, and employ color to bold effect, but that’s of secondary importance (the least we can expect of an artist). What drives these artists is Imagination. Another word for imagination is risk, another word for risk is danger, another word for danger is aesthetics. And aesthetics, as we know, is for the birds. But these artists aint tweeting.

Hi Folks, we’ve decided to pare down The Week/Weekend listings to a much more condensed version for the summer months.
Why you may ask? A couple of reasons factor into it but the most important being the amount of time it takes to create the listings each week. Even with an automated system, there are hours of work to format and post correctly and although we want to support all creative endeavors in New York, there are A-LOT of them. We feel a more in-depth focus will benefit not only local events but also give us more time to focus on the increasingly wonderful creation of the 3rd volume our flagship publication, The 22 Magazine, as well as allow us to move towards future goals such as the publication of special editions like the upcoming Rule of Three.
On that note, instead of full listings we will start to narrow down the focus to specific event previews, interviews, and reviews. At the end of these listings there will be a link to the events listings page. To get on this page you must enter your event via our events input page. Listings will still come out on Thursdays, and submissions must be made by noon on the prior Wednesday to be considered.

This exhibition showcases Biddle’s continuing interest in mixed media, with a twist of humor found in much of her work. Old wires, light bulbs, screws and other found objects protrude from holes in ceramic objects, while creature-like robots – strange, disturbing and endearing – appear in collages and drawings. Liberty is a contemplation of the present in the wake of 9/11. The Statue of Liberty itself simultaneously represents an overused icon and a diminishing concept. These works offer a means of viewing such images and enable reflection of our world, our nation, our politics, our person, our perspective, and our relationship to all. Mann’s large paintings in Root, created by combining chance stains with highly rendered decorative elements on oversized, un-stretched paper, function as human-sized portholes into a landscape alive with minute details, patterns and interlocking systems.
SONIC: Sounds of a New Century (ONGOING)
SONiC – Sounds of a New Century – a brand new festival of 21st century music by more than 100 composers age 40 and under, will take over New York from Friday, October 14 through Saturday, October 22, 2011. Events will range from a daylong marathon to a DJ/VJ night, from a free symphony concert at the World Financial Center Winter Garden to collaborations between emerging choreographers and composers. SONiC concerts will take place at ten different venues throughout New York, and will include performances by 16 extraordinary ensembles featuring at least 18 world premieres, eight US premieres, and eight New York premieres. SONiC is co-curated by composer Derek Bermel and pianist Stephen Gosling, and is a production of American Composers Orchestra and The Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University. SONiC is presented in partnership with Carnegie Hall and Miller Theatre at Columbia University. New York Public Radio’s online radio station, Q2, is the media partner and digital venue.

Vogt Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of contemporary German drawing, “Eyes Wide Shut,” featuring work by Jonathan Meese, Andy Hope 1930, Ralf Ziervogel, Hansjoerg Dobliar, Marc Brandenburg, Ulla von Brandenburg, Claudia Wieser, Bo Christian Larsson, and Florian Meisenberg. The exhibition brings together some of the most well-known German artists working in drawing today and is guest curated by Birgit Sonna, a Berlin-based writer and curator.

FIGMENT is a forum for the creation and display of participatory and interactive art by emerging artists across disciplines. FIGMENT began in July 2007 as a free, one-day participatory arts event on Governors Island in New York Harbor with over 2,600 participants. Since then, FIGMENT has grown significantly each year—in number of projects, duration, participants, volunteers, fundraising capability, exhibitions, locations, overall level of commitment and participation, and public support. My Pie Town is a project by Debbie Grossman in which she reworks and re-imagines a body of images originally photographed by Russell Lee for the United States Farm Security Administration in 1940. Using Photoshop to modify Lee’s pictures, she created an imaginary, parallel world – a Pie Town populated exclusively by women. The images are revised in subtle ways, making the reading of them very complicated and compelling. The sixteen images in the series are both color and black and white, and are all based on Lee’s unpublished series on Pietown, a homesteaded community in New Mexico. (more…)

In this course, we will explore the day-to-day cooking of the past 200 years: tasting; talking; and extracting inspiration from the past to inspire contemporary cooking. In this three-part course, you’ll become familiar with the popular flavors and recipes of different eras, then learn how to interpret historic and vintage recipes for a modern day kitchen.
Part 1: A Timeline of Taste
A Timeline of Taste will explore the history of American food through flavor: we’ll travel from 1796-1950, making a pit stop every 50 years to explore the tastes of a particular time. You’ll be allowed to smell and sample the spices, fruits, extracts, and other ingredients that defined the flavors of different time periods. From rosewater to vanilla; nutmeg to cinnamon; citron to reddi-whip, we’ll discuss why each of these flavors were popular and how they were used in day to day cooking.
Part 2: Iconic Dishes
What was being cooked in the kitchens of American can reflect the politics and popular culture of an era. Looking at the past 200 years, we’ll explore iconic recipes from each time and discuss why each was popular: including the legends behind them and the technology that made them possible. We’ll taste each of these recipes and talk about what they represented to families, communities and culture.
Part 3: Re-writing Recipes
In our final session, participants are invited to bring in their own vintage cookbooks and handwritten recipe cards from the past as we learn how to interpret historic recipes. We’ll unveil tricks to modernize these recipes for today’s kitchen: how to interpret amounts, flesh out directions, find comparable ingredients and most importantly, learn how to pull inspiration from these recipes to create unique contemporary dishes.
