RSVP FOR THE OPENING HERE
Jonas Mekas and Johan Kugelberg present “Wait For Me At The Bottom Of The Pool,” artwork, ephemera, and photography by Jack Smith. The exhibition at Boo-Hooray opens this Valentine’s Day. Jack Smith, 1932-1989, was a master of the exotic idiom, working in theatre, underground film, photography, graphic design, drawing, and slideshows. He was one of the path-finding pioneers of American post-war underground aesthetics. Boo-Hooray is exhibiting handbills, posters, photographs, letters, artwork and collages by Jack Smith, spanning his times and mores.

A Survey of Nonexistence at a Glance
On view from February 28 through April 13, 2013.
Opening reception Thursday, February 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Miyako Yoshinaga is pleased to announce A Survey of Nonexistence at a Glance, the second solo show comprising new drawings and sculpture from Joseph Burwell. This exhibition is based on the idea of altering historical narratives by generating a visual system of architectures from disparate cultures that collide in time and space. A Survey of Nonexistence at a Glance examines the vestiges of a lost architectural period and its cultural byproducts.
A solo installation by Nathan Vincent
Opening on Friday, February 15th
Opening on Friday, February 15th is a show that will blow you away! Crochet artist Nathan Vincent is wiring the gallery with fiber “explosives”, transforming Mighty Tanaka into a virtual tinder box. DON’T MAKE ME count to three! explores the roles that we play in society and our necessity to break through the barriers placed in front of us. You won’t want to miss this immersive experience providing a view into the mind of Nathan Vincent!
The first solo exhibition in a New York museum by the globally renowned contemporary artist El Anatsui, this show will feature over 30 works in metal and wood that transform appropriated objects into site-specific sculptures. Anatsui converts found materials into a new type of media that lies between sculpture and painting, combining aesthetic traditions from his birth country, Ghana; his home in Nsukka, Nigeria; and the global history of abstraction.
New York City Opera’s Powder Her Face
BAM
Inspired by the real-life sex scandal that rocked Britain in the early 60s, English composer Thomas Adès’ 1995 chamber opera returns to BAM 15 years after its New York premiere at the BAM Majestic Theater (now the BAM Harvey Theater). In this new production from New York City Opera, director Jay Scheib presents his genre-defying vision, integrating technology and daring physicality to this modern opera that plays off the public’s obsession with the tabloid controversy surrounding a series of Polaroid photos of Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, dubbed the “Dirty Duchess.” Through the prism of Campbell’s life story, and featuring Phillip Hensher’s libretto, Powder Her Face explores the intersection of gender, politics, and power.
SINGLE FARE 3
RH GALLERY
OPENING RECEPTION
February 13th, 2013

DON CRISTÓBAL, BILLY-CLUB MAN
Abrons Arts Center
February 15-March 3
For centuries, the puppet Don Cristóbal — the Spanish version of Punch — has charmed audiences with his drunken, lusty billy-club wielding antics. But does he secretly struggle with his role as the Billy-Club Man and long for love and escape? Through experimental puppetry, clowning and live music, Don Cristóbal, Billy-Club Man explores the violent appetites of Cristóbal’s on-stage persona and follows him off-stage to reveal his poetic possibilities. Inspired by two comedic and surreal puppet plays by Federico García Lorca, the piece features shadow, hand, and large figurative puppetry by Erin Orr and evocative original music by Rima Fand.

The Foundry Theatre’s Good Person of Szechwan
Feb 1-24
La Mama
Can we practice goodness and create a world to sustain it? In Brecht’s comic and complex play, this question is raised by one of his most entertaining characters — Shen Tei the good-hearted, penniless, cross-dressing prostitute, who is forced to disguise herself as a savvy businessman named Sui Ta so she can master the ruthlessness needed to be a “good person” in a brutal world.
Nadia Sirota: Baroque
The Kitchen
To celebrate the release of her new album, Baroque (Bedroom Community / New Amsterdam), violist Nadia Sirota will perform music from the record, premiering Judd Greenstein’s “In Teaching Others We Teach Ourselves” for seven violas. Sirota’s unique interpretive voice has served as muse to some of the most widely respected composers of her generation, and Baroque features works written for Sirota by Daníel Bjarnason, Paul Corley, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, and Shara Worden. This album is the follow-up to Sirota’s debut, First Things First, which was a New York Times 2009 record of the year.

Calico Presents “Bad on its Own”
Calico (67 West St)
November 16 – December 2, 2012
Technically, a tree falling in the woods doesn’t make a sound unless the resonance has an eardrum to bounce off of – an argument that only stands under the assumption that the “anyone” in the famous question is a human being. Yet the crash displays independence even within its own nature. The tree falls despite our ears and despite its own roots.Art also provides an example of an imaginary sentience, and “Bad on its Own” is a particularly mischievous one. Pairing the malleable found textile patterns of Amanda Browder with “nature” paintings by Martin Esteves, the show demonstrates a pretend awareness through a more puckish spite; but art isn’t actually aware of itself, so the line treads wearily between a straight face and a smirk. Browder’s oversized installations create optical hallucinations from the simplest found sources. Her materials have been freed from all practical intentions and aren’t afraid to let you know it. Esteves’ paintings highlight the fact that nature is mean spirited already, regardless of human interferences such as greenhouse effects or global warming. Both artists’ mix of beauty and farce are what gives this show its title. The word “Bad” here means an intentional state.
Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra/Sven Ratzke with special guest Joey Arias/Alice Smith
Joe’s Pub
11:30 PM – November 16
There comes a time in every artist’s life when they have to step into the spotlight on their own terms. For Janet, it was about Control. For Prince, it was about Emancipation. But for Alice Smith, it’s the art (and hard-won battle) of simply being herself. The NYC-bred singer/songwriter/producer, known for her 4-octave vocal range and stunning stage presence, made a name for herself with her critically-acclaimed 2006 debut album, For Lovers, Dreamers & Me, released on BBE Records. At the time, her artful blend of bluesy, soulful vocals and mid-tempo grooves garnered a passionate following that packed venues like NYC’s Mercury Lounge and Joe’s Pub, while Vibe Magazine gushed that her sound “evoke[s] Fiona Apple’s finest material.” Her single “Dream” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Urban/Alternative category.

Saturday, Nov 15
Jack Dunning’s production work as Untold has reinvigorated the climate of dancefloors around the globe. Through his work with Hessle Audio, Clone, R&S and Hotflush, Dunning elevated dubstep to uncharted territories, combining it with grime, jungle and more recently techno. A lot of his music is truly alien and doesn’t really easily fit into any of these categories. Through his label, Hemlock Recordings, he has continued this pioneering role – discovering James Blake and releasing groundbreaking work from Ramadanman and Breton. Untold recently releasing his most comprehensive work to date – the three part EP “Change in a Dynamic Environment” (which you can hear in full on his Soundcloud). We’ve been eager to bring back Untold ever since he played the set of the night at the fist Bass Mutations at The Bunker at Unsound Festival New York back in 2010.

THE LITTLE TOP CIRCUS & MEDICINE SHOW/HEART OF DARKNESS W/GREG BARRIS
Union Hall
Sat, Nov 17
Calling the low, the weak, and the ungodly! Calling the faithless, the mentally infirm, and the spiritually bereft! This is the end of days and that rumble in the distance is the wagons of The Little Top Circus & Medicine Show, rolling into town to save your sad sinner’s soul. Led by the evangelically infamous Good Reverend Doctor Professor Elucius Clay, this band of befouled lowlifes will horrify (watch as Stitch the Geek mutilates his own flesh!), flummox (recoil at Bobby Phobia’s feats of physiology), mystify (witness the Good Reverend’s holy fingersmithery, learned unto him in the Orient!) and titillify (surrender to the undulant charms of burlesque!), all to the blood-stirring sounds of musicianers Doc Minch, plus Ratty Mousebites & Miz E of The Hot Sardines.

Perpetual Recombination : Ian Trask Solo Exhibition
Recession Art
OPENING, Saturday, November 17, 6–10pm
In Perpetual Recombination, Recession Art’s featured artist Ian Trask presents a collection of sculptures that visualize an evolved interplay between concept, material and technique. The show’s title refers to the exchange of material between chromosomes during meiosis (cell division) and the resulting recombination of maternal and paternal DNA, a process that perpetuates genetic diversity of species and biodiversity of ecosystems. By analogy, this body of work represents nearly a decade of creative evolution. The combinatorial potential between the materials Trask collects and the processes he applies over time generate an elaborate diversity of forms all descended from a fundamental intuitive origin.
PEPPE VOLTARELLI: THE JOURNEY, THE FATHER, THE MEMBERSHIP”/TARRAS BAND
Barbes
Sat 11/17
Based in Bologna, Italy, Peppe Voltarelli was the leader of Calabrian folk rock group Il Parto delle Nuvole Pesanti. In 2005, he starred in the cult movie “The true legend of Tony Vilar” about the search for an argentinean-Italian singer, and then embarked on a solo career, using his dual background as musician and performance artist. His new show is a look the Italian heritage through songs that shaped the global Italian identity and Peppe’s own career.
First Look: Aboveground Animation
New Museum
11/17
Artist and curator Casey Jane Ellison will present twenty short-form animations from Aboveground Animation, the online archive and roving exhibition platform she founded in 2008. The screening is staged in conjunction with First Look, the New Museum’s Digital Project series—through which a selection of animations from Aboveground Animation, exploring 3-D renderings of post-human forms, premiered in October. For this screening, Ellison will present a more expansive selection of Aboveground Animation. Made by an international group of emerging artists, the featured works take up a variety of themes and concerns, and exhibit original approaches to hand-drawn and stop animation, as well as employ new tools such as CGI. Following the hour-long screening, a discussion will be held with local artists Erin Dunn, Steve Emmons, Ryan Whittier Hale, Lauren Gregory, Rhett LaRue, Robert Bittenbender, Jacolby Satterwhite, Lale Westvind, and Ellison.
As Real As It Gets
ApexArt
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 15: 6-8 pm
Tell me about yourself, and you might mention where you’re from, the music you prefer, perhaps a favorite writer or filmmaker or artist, possibly even the sports teams you root for. But I doubt you’ll mention brands or products. That would seem shallow, right? There’s just something illegitimate about openly admitting that brands and products can function as cultural material, relevant to identity and expression. It’s as if we would prefer this weren’t true. (But we know it is: Tell me about a neighbor, co-worker, someone you met at a party, and it becomes far easier, convenient, maybe even necessary, to situate that other person within branded material culture.) The underlying discomfort is something I’ve noted over many years spent writing about brands and products. One reader comment clarifies the dilemma. In a column about products and companies that exist only in the fictional worlds of books and movies, I categorized such things as “imaginary brands.” Harrumph to that, this reader replied: All brands are imaginary.

Visionary director Ivo van Hove transforms the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House into a modern-day Roman amphitheater with this interactive, hyper-modern take on Shakespeare’s powerful trilogy about the use and abuse of power: Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, andCoriolanus. Staged as a single immersive experience, van Hove’s production turns audience members into the citizens of Rome, encouraging them to grab a drink during the action at the on-stage bar, push through the crowd to hear Marc Antony defend Caesar, or take it all in on giant video screens and tickertape news feeds.

VALERIE HEGARTY: Figure, Flowers, Fruit
Nicelle Beauchene Gallery
September 9, 2012 – October 21, 2012
In this exhibition, Hegarty takes her point of departure from themes of consumption, lust, reproduction and greed. Playing with traditional still life and figurative painting, Hegarty cites as inspiration the cult comedy Little Shop of Horrors along with current newsheadlines concerning the enhancement and mutilation of body and food. These four new paintings metamorphose sculpturally, as the paintings burst, grow and propagate in bodily gestures, leading the overgrowth to travel ominously beyond the canvas boundaries.
Strange Tales of Liaozhai
Friday, September 7
HERE Arts Center
Through choreography and manipulation, master puppeteer Hanne Tierney conducts an intricate counterweight system of over 100 strings, transforming a full stage of inanimate objects into the players of two emotionally charged tales.
Nancy Davidson: Dustup
Betty Cunningham Gallery
9/6/2012 To 10/6/2012
Betty Cuningham Gallery is pleased to open its 2012-13 season with Nancy Davidson, featuring her inflatable sculpture, Dustup. This will be the artist’s first exhibition at the Gallery. The artist will be present for the opening reception. Davidson, a sculptor and video artist, is known for her unique media – larger than life inflatable sculptures – and for her interest in American icons and gender issues. In 2005 with the support of a Creative Capital Grant, she began her exploration on the myth and reality of the cowgirl. After researching western women’s history Davidson focused on the rodeo cowgirl.
Thomas Allen: Beautiful Evidence
Sep 9 - Oct 14, 2012
Foley Gallery
Allen’s signature use of cutting and repurposing book illustrations has not vanished. Instead of the pulp fiction genre, Allen plays with 50’s era versions of clean cut youths and domesticated moms. His unmistakable talent for creating the illusion of 3D in photography with his deft cuts and crimps, establishes a magical world in which a boy and girl play tag creating their own kind of electricity, a milkman makes a very special delivery in space, young toughs play marbles with the solar system and a mother busily sews her own version of “string theory.”
David Stoupakis/Matthew Bone
September 8th – October 19th
Last Rites Gallery
David Stoupakis is an internationally recognized painter who creates eerie portraits of beings that appear wise beyond their years. The self-taught artist adds both haunting imagery and grim fairytale-like elements to his work to juxtapoz childhood innocence with macabre surroundings. InAshes to Sorrow, his new collection of drawings and oil paintings, David creates a continuation of his previous body of work-Walking with These Shadows./With his new work, Matthew Bone continues to explore the visual language he created as a child when massive unmonitored media consumption informed his worldview. A latchkey kid from an early age, pornography, comic books and movies formulated his ideas of sexuality, masculinity, and femininity- in essence reality and perception were sculpted by imaginary worlds steeped heavily in sensationalistic imagery.

Exploring the Poison Cauldron of the Newtown Creek with Mitch Waxman
August 25, 2012, 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Meetup at the corner of Kingsland and Norman Avenues in Greenpoint at 11
The 22 is headed out this Saturday to check out Atlas Obscura’s tour of Newton Creek. We’ll have a full update afterwards, but in the meantime buy your tickets and join us! We will be exploring the petroleum and waste transfer districts of the Newtown Creek watershed in North Brooklyn. Heavily industrialized, the area we will be walking through is the heart of the Greenpoint Oil Spill and home to scores of waste transfer stations and other heavy industries. We will be heading for the thrice damned Kosciuszko Bridge, which is scheduled for a demolition and replacement project which will be starting in 2013. Photographers, in particular, will find this an interesting walk through a little known and quite obscure section of New York City.

Hill-Wood.

House of Yes‘ recent fine art and performance art showcase, “Underpinnings” curated by Lauren Xandra and Rusty Van Riper focused loosely around the idea of “peeling” or multiple selves. The night was a success in many areas, including body control (choreography), preparedness, and flow of the night, while maintaining a heavy emphasis on dance and collaborative showcase. Highlights of the evening included “If Peeled…,” (choreographed and directed by Lauren Xandra) consisting of male and female dancers exploring the shapes and motions of bodies solo and en masse, followed by a perpetual motion chair piece performed by Pam Weiss and Laura Alexander titled, “Rise and Fall” (choreographed by Charlotte Hendrickson), “R(o/a)m” (choreographed by Claire Baum) and the surprisingly funny final piece, “Self Love Next to You” which consisted of siblings (Carolyn Ellis, Andrew Ellis) having a mock spat at the dinner table, complete with on tempo knife and fork fight. Take a look at some photos from the night below and see more here.

All are invited to be present in Dream Time, listening into the moment, discovering who we are in this moment, within and without, listening, sounding, moving, seriously playing the moment, exploring the moment as a community of listeners/viewers. Because of each member’s diverse musical background and training, PitchBlak is active in teaching and mentoring young musicians in New York, and prides itself on giving back to the community. “CORIOLANUS” (Shakespeare in the Parking Lot)
Municipal Parking Lot at the corner of Ludlow and Broome Streets, Manhattan
August 2-18
Coriolanus” has been re-envisioned as a modern day “election fable” in the second production of the Drilling Company’s 2012 Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot series. This “Coriolanus” is set during an election year, when money can buy power and working class citizens feel threatened by a dwindling patrician class who are seeking to solidify their political power by manipulating political figures. The title character, played by Arash Mokhtar, is a potential leader who is vaunted for his success as a warrior but is completely out of touch with the every day citizen’s experience of hunger and joblessness.

An Illustrated lecture and book signing with Rachel Poliquin, author of The Breathless Zoo and the blog “Ravishing Beasts”
Observatory
Friday, August 17th
In her new book The Breathless Zoo: Taxidermy and the Cultures of Longing, Rachel Poliquin–best known for her blog “Ravishing Beasts”–explores the cultural history and poetic resonance of taxidermy from its rudimentary beginnings in cabinets of wonder to its revival in contemporary art. From hunting trophies to extinct species and kitten weddings to perpetual pets, The Breathless Zoo examines the meaning and matter of preserved animal-things and why anyone would want them to exist, and attempts to get to the heart of taxidermy by answering two fundamental questions: why would anyone want to preserve an animal, and what is this animal-thing now? Animal or object? Animal and object. This is the irresolvable tension that defines all taxidermy. As The Breathless Zoo demonstrates, with taxidermy there are no easy answers.
The Fall of the American Movie Palace

Saturday, August 18th
There’s nothing remarkable about a movie theater today, but there used to be. When the great American Movie Palaces opened, they were some of the most lavish, stunning buildings anyone had ever seen. With the birth of the multiplex, theater companies found it harder and harder to keep these buildings open. Some were demolished, some were converted, and some remain to this day. “The Fall of the American Movie Palace” will take you through the history of these magnificent buildings, from their opening in the early 1900s to years after the final curtain.

Expanding from his solo work, Microcosm is — in a nutshell — in a band with Jonas on the soprano saxophone, his alter ego on the Arturia Moog foot pedal, and Caira, an intelligent agent who improvises autonomously with the trio using auditory scene analysis techniques, machine listening, and logic-based reasoning. The agent is currently being developed through support from the National Science Foundation, together with team members Doug Van Nort, Pauline Oliveros, and Selmer Bringsjord. The Microcosm project was conceived to cross traditional boundaries between arts and science, and was conceptualized out of the desire to perform with an inspiring ensemble that can follow and provide musical cues very quickly. The concert will include adaptations from Jonas’ previous works: “Global Reflections”, “Sonic Territories”, and “Quartet for the End of Space”, which were released on Deep Listening and Pogus.

Their sound is a re-invention, a nostalgic throwback to a time and place mostly imagined where Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras mix with French opera, Cowboy tunes and Bollywood classics. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat. Their new album, Ziguala is an attempt to imagine what a pop record would sound like had the global Latin influence which was so prevalent until the early 60′s had continued its course without interruption. The tracks on the album are re-interpretations of songs from Spain, France, Peru, India, Mexico, Greece, Venezuela, Colombia and Naples. Ziguala is not so much a latin record as it is a pop record that uses a latin vocabulary. Think of it as the opposite of Rock en Español, itself a Latin genre which uses a rock vocabulary.

A few artists worth an extra look this week…

Judith Braun at Parallel Art Space
WEBSITE.
Parallel Art Space proudly presents Pressing Matter, a three-person art exhibition featuringJudith Braun, Antonia Perez, and Hilda Shen, who fashion the material components of their work almost entirely by hand (pressing, folding, turning); resulting in finished products that are monumental, insistent, and imbued with a gravitational presence that belies the human span of their creation.
Wappen Field from Michael Cook on Vimeo.
Michelle Jaffé WAPPEN FIELD @ BOSI CONTEMPORARY.
Wappen Field is a sculpture and sound installation comprised of 12 chrome plated steel helmets resembling face guards. Running through SuperCollider each helmet’s dedicated speaker animates the room with vocals and extended voice techniques created for this work by Ayelet Rose Gottlieb. The sonic configuration imagines the collective unconscious as energy propelled between the yin and yang impulses of the universe.

David Dupuis in It’s Always Sunny on The Inside at Anton Kern.
The title itself is comprised of two somewhat contradictory parts: Itʼs Always Summer and On the Inside, which is unusual in that Summer typically conjures images of the Outside. This conceptual bridge between the two distinct parts of the exhibitionʼs title functions like a Zen Koan and forms the crux of the exhibition. Which begs the question: what or where is The Inside?

JAYSON MUSSON: HALCYON DAYS.
ARTIST WEBSITE.
“The thing I found most alluring about Coogi sweaters was how painterly they were. They seemingly lingered on the borders of gestural abstraction. I made the joke, “That Coogi looks like a Pollock”. Over the course of the following weeks, I began collecting images of the sweaters, studying their composition. They seemed to defy the traditional logic of the textile, opting instead to appear spontaneous and created by hand rather than machine-made. Each sweater, though a manufactured object seemed to seek its own authenticity. Even the old Coogi slogan “Wearable Art” seemed to confirm the desire for each sweater to be considered an objet unique, a specialized commodity.”

Whether billboard or postcard-sized, the works command the viewer’s attention through colors, lively settings and inspired brushwork. The narratives in these works honor the role of the natural world and self-selected communities. A lake at summer camp, an artist studio or laboratory environment might appear familiar initially, but the evident strange(r) element in all three artists’ works give them charge and wisdom.

Three projects in the exhibition are New York debuts: Mark Napier’s net.flag: ten years of flags, comprised of nearly 23,000 flags created by visitors to the net.flag website; Marina Zurkow’s The Thirsty Bird, an ecologically-charged animation informed by a recent residency in Houston, Texas; and Marco Brambilla’s RPM, a psychological video portrait of a Formula One driver’s point-of-view.
Breakestra/Heylady
Where: Brooklyn Bowl
When: Thu, June 28, 2012
The Breakestra began as the house band for the legendary late 90′s hip hop party that Miles promoted called the Breaks. Egon from Stonesthrow Records further explains the etymology of their name: “Break. As in “breakbeat.” That ten second slice of percussive magic in the middle of a funk song that, when looped together by progressive South Bronx DJs in the 1970s, became the basis of the hip-hop movement. Arkestra. Out-there jazzer Sun Ra’s funkafied concept of the stuffy classical orchestra.” When we combine the two concepts, you have the Breakestra or in other words an orchestra that plays funky ass classic & new original breaks.
Archival Portraits
Where: Carriage Trade
When: June 29 – July 29, 2012, Opens Friday, June 29, 2012, 6-8 p.m.
Traditionally highlighting the unique personality of a subject, the genre of portraiture is at odds with the increasingly disparate quality of our current experience of the self. The popularity of social media and instant communication has meant much more frequent interaction between individuals, which favors brevity and is often disconnected from place. Now being available “anytime” takes precedence over one’s location, as the disengagement of context (where and how we encounter one another) from interpersonal exchanges poses questions for the ongoing relationship between perception and identity.

When: Friday, Jun 29 – 9:00PM & 10:30PM
For over 15 years, the Theo Bleckmann & Ben Monder Duo has been touring the U.S., Europe and Asia creating a unique approach to what might be called “jazz art song”, blurring the boundaries between jazz, classical, ambient and rock. Bleckmann’s vocal style is based on a thorough understanding of the jazz vocal tradition as well as “extended vocal techniques” (he has been a principal in Meredith Monk’s Vocal Ensemble since 1994) and also uses electronic looping and processing in order to create choral and textural soundscapes. Film fans will note that Bleckmann created the alien language used in the film Men In Black.

Pretty Lights Music Album Release: Eliot Lipp

Eliot Lipp didn’t choose to become one of the most looked to artists in contemporary electronic music, but somehow, Lipp’s sound, one that uses vintage gear to create a unique take on Hip Hop and House, has quickly garnered the respect among the industry’s most influential musicians and producers as well as the deep admiration among audiences worldwide.

During performances, Micka buries himself in a pile of electronics-shelves of effects, mixing consoles, amps and delay units-while patiently constructing a layered nest of loops consisting of live drum beats, guitar chords, scrapes, chucks, chimes, and melodies resulting in anything from more conventional songs to meticulously crafted ambient movements on to full on improvisation.

Fuse Ensemble presents “Voices from the Depths, Musings on CG Jung’s Red Book”
Where: The Firehouse Space
When: June 16, 2012 8:00 pm
Fuse Ensemble is a concept-based new music/new media performing ensemble. Each season a concept is presented, giving voice to new music composers and creating musical happenings with visual elements of live, interactive video and/or kinetic installations. The musicians of Fuse perform on an eclectic mix of flute, clarinet, electric violin, electric guitar, cello, piano, electronic playback, percussion, and invented instruments. Linked by the insane possibilities of software such as MaxMSP/Jitter, using sensors on the musicians and live interactive cameras on stage, the artists create an experience that fuses sound, video and humans into a liquefied state and gives each concept a setting — a visual and kinetic environment to experience it in that furthers communication
and unifies the concept.

Ban Fracking in NY State!
Where: 7408 Fifth Avenue, Bay Ridge
When: Thursday, June 14, at 4 p.m.
Fracking poses a serious threat to our drinking water, our agricultural land, and our air quality. It adds to our greenhouse gas emissions, and pushes us even further away from renewable energy solutions.
We need to persuade key Albany legislators to ban fracking in New York State. One of those key legislators is Brooklyn’s State Senator Martin Golden. Join Climate Action/Brooklyn For Peace and New Yorkers Against Fracking as we send a message to Senator Golden: Save Our Water! Ban Fracking Now!
Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Musik Im Bauch
Where: Naumberg Bandshell, Central Park, Manhattan
When: June 21
Karlheinz Stockhausen‘s 1975 music-theatre work Musik Im Bauch (“Music in the Belly”) for six percussionists places its audience in an outré fairly-tale dream world. The piece was inspired by a game Stockhausen played with his two-year-old daughter, Julika, in which the composer listened to the sounds in her noisy stomach. Seven years later, Stockhausen conceived Musik Im Bauch during a dream. A loose narrative defines the transformation into humanity of three automatons, who attack a giant bird-man, named Miron, savagely cutting open his stomach and pulling out 3 music boxes which play melodies based on the signs of the Zodiac.

Nelson Loskamp is known for his dynamic relationship with the figure. He has executed work in a multitude of media within the parameters of individualistic style and cultural visual stigmas. Horror Girls comes from an interpretation of still shots from an assortment of 1960’s horror films. Loving the style in these B films, Nelson considers the 60’s hair and make-up in their depicted period settings and recreates them in haunting paintings that are both
beautiful and macabre.

Reception June 14, 6-8pm.
From ancient underground rivers and forgotten quarry tunnels to modern sewers and utility networks, the underground layers of the world’s great cities are full of places that are usually unseen, but that reveal the city’s history in new and startling ways. These hidden layers of the urban environment can teach us about how cities grow and function, and can provide a new perspective that highlights the ways that our daily experience in any city shapes– and is shaped by– the built environment around us.
ERIK SCHOONEBEEK: PHANTOM HAND
Where: Jeff Bailey Gallery
When: June 14 – July 13, 2012, Opening Reception: Thursday, June 14 6-8 pm
Jeff Bailey Gallery is pleased to present Erik Schoonebeek: Phantom Hand. This is his first solo exhibition in New York, featuring paintings and drawings made on found paper, old book covers and other materials. Schoonebeek is influenced by contemporary advertising images, especially those seen while driving: road signs, billboards, commercial graphics, logos and posters. Although these images and graphic symbols are designed to communicate in some way, for Schoonebeek they become enmeshed with one another and change, as he says, “ into autonomous images that confront you with a blank stare”. From this source material, Schoonebeek forms his own imagery that hovers between recognizable graphic cues and amorphous narrative.

Over the last 25 years, Mr. Morris has opened the door to a new understanding of musical language. It is called Conduction®. Employing 5,000+ musicians in 23 countries and 65 cities, Conduction® has amply demonstrated its capacity for cultural diplomacy, compelling and inspiring musicians and audiences alike. By facilitating a new social logic based on collective interpretation and personal interaction, it demonstrates a significant medium for the creation of a contemporary music. Known for its ceaseless investigation of an “extra dimension” that transcends style and category, Conduction has also proven itself supplemental to the entire scope of musical and artistic endeavor. Here, ensemble identity, and cultural tradition cohere.

BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL & NOLAFUNK/CEG PRESENT: LEON REDBONE
Where: June 23, 2012 , 7:30 pm
When: June 23
For decades, Leon Redbone has remained musically resonant and personally elusive. Although his iconic guise of white fedora, jacket, and sunglasses has been thoroughly satirized, it’s easy to overlook what a genuinely gifted artist he remains — a role he inevitably tries to downplay.
To the Stars on the Wings of an Eel
Where: The Gowanus Ballroom
When: June 29th–July 7th, 2012
Throughout its history the Gowanus has inspired both utopian dreams and dystopian nightmares. The past four-hundred years have witnessed the site’s transformation from a fertile series of tidal wetlands to one of the busiest industrial waterways in the United States. The canal, once a source for sustenance and hope, is today tainted by a notorious legacy of pollution and decay.
THE ENCHANTED ORGAN: A PORN OPERA
Where: Dixon Place
When:Friday-Saturday, June 22-23, 9:30pm
The Enchanted Organ” is a burlesque opera that celebrates sexuality and satirizes the porn industry, while parodying four hundred years of the operatic tradition. Composer/librettist team Gordon Beeferman and Charlotte Jackson, with director Beth Greenberg, bring their trademark wit and polymorphous perversity to this journey through “the Magical Kingdom of Porn,” a place where past and present, straight and queer, and dead and living converge. Bridging the gap between “high” art and “low,” we puncture the turgid balloon of “traditional” opera and revivify the flaccid clichés of porn. Drawing on influences as diverse as classic 70s porn soundtracks, Monteverdi, and Ancient Greek hymns, and bridging the worlds of opera, drag, and striptease, this work-in-progress is as close as you’ll get (or want to get!) to “aural sex.”

AN UPDATE ON GETTING LISTED:
Hi Folks, we’ve decided to pare down The Week/Weekend listings to a much more condensed version for the summer months.
Why you may ask? A couple of reasons factor into it but the most important being the amount of time it takes to create the listings each week. Even with an automated system, there are hours of work to format and post correctly and although we want to support all creative endeavors in New York, there are A-LOT of them. We feel a more in-depth focus will benefit not only local events but also give us more time to focus on the increasingly wonderful creation of the 3rd volume our flagship publication, The 22 Magazine, as well as allow us to move towards future goals such as the publication of special editions like the upcoming Rule of Three.
On that note, instead of full listings we will start to narrow down the focus to specific event previews, interviews, and reviews. At the end of these listings there will be a link to the events listings page. To get on this page you must enter your event via our events input page. Listings will still come out on Thursdays, and submissions must be made by noon on the prior Wednesday to be considered.
Thanks for sticking by us during this transition, and as always with this transition comes new opportunities. If you are looking for coverage make sure to hit us up at the22magazine (at) gmail (dot) com. We have varying styles and tastes and are always open to interesting ideas. If you are a writer interested in pitching an idea or writing a review please also contact at the email above and we will give you more details.

3 x 3 — A Night of Brooklyn Trios — IRON DOG / THE SOUND BATS / THE REUBEN RADDING GROUP
Where: Freddy’s Back Room
When: May 29, 8pm
Three trios, one night…Iron Dog, The Sound Bats, and The Reuben Radding Group have influences that reach from the far corners of the globe to the mysterious nether regions of the psyche. Filled with electronically manipulated organic sounds, bristly downtown punk-jazz, and traditional Balkan music – get ready for a cosmopolitan night of music that could only be Made In Brooklyn.
Also check out Stuart Popejoy’s (Iron Dog) solo show at The Firehouse Space on May 31.

Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce Lakes, Trees and Honeybees, an exhibition of new photographs and prints by Matthew Brandt from his series Lakes and Reservoirs, Trees, Honeybees and Taste Tests in Color. The exhibition will open on Thursday, May 24, and will be on view through Saturday, June 30, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, May 24, from 6:00–8:00PM. This will be Matthew Brandt’s first exhibition with the gallery and his first solo exhibition in New York. Matthew Brandt creates his prints using physical elements from the subject itself. Inspired by landscape photography of the American West – especially its correlation to the methods of printing and making images during photography’s infancy in the mid-nineteenth century – the artist revives traditional photographic techniques through various production processes, including handmade papermaking and gum-bichromate.

We will celebrate a holiday for the 99%. We will come together across lines of race, class, gender, and religion and challenge the systems that create these divisions among us. New Yorkers will join with millions throughout the world — workers, students, immigrants, professionals, houseworkers — We will take to the streets to unite in a General Strike against a system which does not work for us. With our collective power we will begin to build the world we want to see. Another world is possible!

8pm-
Unique in the realm of approaches to improvisational conducting, Go: Organic Orchestra utilizes a composed non-linear score consisting of sound and motion elements. These include tone rows, synthetic scales, melodies, linguistic shapes, intervallic patterns, textural gestures, modes, ragas, maqams, and plainchant. The score serves to provide material for both the improvisations and the orchestrations. Motion and forms and are generated through the application of the composer’s rhythm concept “Cyclic Verticalism” whereby polymeters are combined with additive rhythm cycles.

7:30pm-
A semi-autobiographical “mockumentary” from a puppetry and performance art pioneer. Lunatic Cunning mixes experiences from Godwin’s own life—such as his work with Julie Taymor on Across the Universe and appearances on Saturday Night Live, Chappelle’s Show, PBS and with Jim Henson’s Muppets. It’s a humorous examination of the occult roots of puppetry and performance art.
