What Stirs.

Shall we cut our rhymes from that ridge of coal,
that crawls beneath the owl-watched pine?

So green,
my memory,

What does he see?
That ancient mare,
in earth stirring.

That blackening equine gaze,
those leonine thighs.

Pacing in circles,
the width of my gyre,
we wear a white-bird torque,
the study of sodium,
armor against a clean death by drought.

Her hands,
broken sticks,
slipped through my fingers.

We pressed on, alone,
through the desert,
white shadows cut from the cloth of fear.

Matthew Cherry is a Creative Studies graduate student and Teaching Assistant at the University of Central Oklahoma, and a veteran in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. His fiction has been published in Calliope magazine, Necrology Shorts, and The Nautilus Engine. His true loves include Chimay Blue and any English word with all five vowels in alphabetical order. Known for his strong and sensuous depictions of women, Brian M. Viveros is a master of contemporary iconography paying homage to the femme fatale. While he almost exclusively paints portraits, within the expressions of his women is conveyed such deep emotion and overwhelming sexuality that his work is undeniably erotic. Often without even a hint of nudity, the viewer is seduced with a mere pout and gaze from his subject’s faces.

In what will be Brian’s second showing at the gallery, the opening will feature an all new collection of original paintings, as well as special rare prints from the artist’s own collection; poster giveaway and signing; live “Smoking Army” performance; screening of Brian’s films along with his new short, and much more.

From Meghann Snow: I have been asked to be the Coordinator of Dimanche Rouge in Brooklyn, New York. Dimanche Rouge will hold a special August edition consisting in street interventions in different cities. Dimanche Rouge invites the general public to take part from these street interventions as group performers. These actions will be filmed and streamed live online. Viewers will be able to watch the performances over the internet.Performances will be held on August 21st, 2011, at 7 pm, Paris time–other countries will match this time so that performances are held simultaneously. (Our NYC starting time is 1PM)

“Dimanche Rouge is an international experimental performance event based in Paris, France taking place every third Sunday of the month. Dimanche Rouge showcases a variety of performances including but not limited to multimedia, audiovisual, sound, graffiti, actions, dance, body art, and interventions. In addition, experimental performers whose work is not generally seen in art venues, such as masseurs, coiffures, cooks, knitters, tatoo designers, and jewelry makers are welcomed to participate and invite members of the public to carry out their performances.

However, with this being said! I am looking artists who would like to perform short works that are 1min – 3 mins long. This venue is an hour long and I would like to squeeze in as many people that I can. To celebrate Resident Advisor’s 10th anniversary, we’ve cooked up something rather epic: a series of ten parties in ten cities around the world, each with a secret headliner.

We take it the ten parties in ten cities thing is pretty easy to understand, so here’s the deal with the secret headliners: each event will feature one carefully selected artist who we think has positively influenced the electronic music landscape over the past decade. Their identities will remain strictly under wraps until they take the stage. Up to that point, each one will be known simply as the X (see what we did there?).

For the US stop on our ten-part series, we take over Le Poisson Rouge, a live concert venue in Manhattan. With the live dynamic firmly in mind, the X has curated a line-up that combines Montreal Jazz Festival stars King Sunshine, a nine-piece ensemble that’s worked with everyone from Robert Owens to DJ Sneak, with master of all things soulful deep house Peven Everett, plus Mala, half of pioneering dubstep duo Digital Mystikz, and Japan’s DJ Masashi Nakazawa. The night will close with a performance by the X, an esteemed headliner whose identity will remain unknown until he or she takes the stage.

Maya Zack: Living Room

In the installation, Living Room, artist and filmmaker Maya Zack uses large-scale computer-generated 3D images accompanied by sound to evoke a Jewish family’s apartment from 1930s Berlin. While listening to the stories and memories of Manfred Nomburg, visitors can experience the apartment visually. 3D glasses enhance the oversized images reimagining rooms in the apartment and give them immediacy and depth.

Everybody Loves the Monster!
Thursday, August 18, 2011, 10 a.m.

In 1818, when Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus was published for the first time, Mary Shelley could not have imagined the monster she was unleashing on the world. The creature in Shelley’s novel is remarkably sympathetic and an eloquent speaker, capable of measured, intelligent, and articulate argument.  But based on Boris Karloff’s 1931 film performance and confirmed by countless other films, comics, and illustrations, the general perception today is that Frankenstein’s creature is a “monster” who grunts or speaks—if he talks at all—in disjointed monosyllables.

Why has popular culture largely denied the creature his reasonable voice? This symposium brings together four scholars and the curator and bibliographer of The New York Public Library’s Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection to reflect on graphic and film representations of the “monster” from the past two centuries. The first half of the day will feature presentations on key visual adaptations of the creature, while the latter half will engage questions about what these appearances mean for understanding him as a political and historical subject.

Stripping fast food architecture and smart phone technology of it’s branding and context, Washko and Dimitrova present what remains – hollow monuments to consumer culture.

Mau Mau gangs, gladiator raft jousting, cocktail catacombs, clothing optional watergun fight, underground casino & film screenings of eerily beautiful movies set on the water, slide show and videos of the battle, and an awards presentation for the victors.  Wet & wild all night long.

In his magnum opus, Gravity’s Rainbow, Thomas Pynchon introduces us to the German concept of Brenschluss in the telemetry of the flight of the V2 rocket. The rocket is propelled by its engines and travels along its parabolic arc.  At a certain point the engines turn off, this flameout is called brenschluss. At brenschluss the rocket’s ascendancy is checked by gravity, and before it begins to fall to its target on earth, it hesitates for just a moment.  After this moment gravity and momentum alone, not a rocket engine, define the inexorable trajectory of descent to its inevitable, calamitous  end. Harvey Stein has been a fixture on the New York photo scene for many years.  He has photographed the city from every angle with every kind of camera, at every time of day and night.  Beyond these shores he has led photographic seminars and workshops all over the world…He’s gone everywhere, and for the last 40 years he’s been going to Coney Island…where New York City flows into the Atlantic Ocean at the end of Ocean Avenue, in Brooklyn.

Vision Festival 16Arts For Art, Inc. presents the 16th annual Vision Festival, New York City’s premier multidisciplinary celebration of innovative jazz music, dance, poetry, and art, held for its third year at the Abrons. Critics have described it as “arguably the most important free-jazz fest in the U.S.” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader), and stated that “avant-garde jazz culture has no better colloquy in this country than the Vision Festival” (Nate Chinen, The New York Times).

Each year, the Vision Festival honors the achievements of one living artist who has greatly influenced the world around them and paved the way for other innovators to move forward. On Wednesday, June 8, Arts For Art and The Vision Festival will celebrate a Lifetime of Achievement by Peter Brotzmann. This great improviser was one of the first practitioners of the Free Jazz movement in Europe. Brotzmann has programmed his own evening in such a way that it would reflect his ongoing pursuit of musical innovation. This 70-year-old artist is not interested in looking back — only in looking forward and being as creative as possible in the present.

An Interview with Ophelia Chong.

First the background questions, where did you grow up and how did you get involved with art?

OPHELIA CHONG:I grew up in the wilds of Canada, in the city of Toronto. I remember my first collage, in grade five; it was a collage made of magazine bits and it was blue and green. During my formative years I was an explorer, I would ride my bike from mid-town to the lake and back; I would disappear for a whole day, exploring the city on my three-speed bike. I quickly outgrew Toronto and packed up and left for Los Angeles. I went to the Art Center College of Design and graduated with a BFA in Painting. I am an adjunct professor there in the Photography Dept.

22: What about collage appeals to you?

OPHELIA CHONG
I love seeing the possibilities of color. Of using the pieces of paper as paint, my X-acto knife the brush.

22:
 What about the fusion of collage and design appeals to you? Are they really just versions of the same thing?

OPHELIA CHONG
It’s all the same thing, I see it all as color and form, no matter what medium it is.

22: You also seem to have a penchant for typography and presses where did that start?
 

OPHELIA CHONG: Shapes, I love the curves of typography. When I was younger I would sit in class sketching serif fonts. I loved the thin with the thick, the swoosh and staccato of forms in typography. When I first used a Vandercook Press six years ago, I was hooked. I love the ink pressing into the paper, the randomness of where the letters fell onto pieces of ephemera that I put through the press. How each piece was a singular piece of art. Never to be repeated twice. I use only vintage magazines to print on, therefore each piece is non-repeatable.

22: Can you explain your 35mm slide work (surreal cereal) process a little? What inspired working with collage this way? Any specific artists? 

OPHELIA CHONG:That is about how we see life. For example, we both see two people arguing, I see it through the lens of my life experience and you see it through your’s. We will both come up with different assumptions of why they are arguing, because we react differently due to the environment we grew up in. My layering of 35mm slides is a tactile version of this theory, I layer images over each other to create something new, something that resonates with the way I see life. I am inspired by Guido Reni, Ba-ra-kei: Ordeal by Roses by Eikoh Hosoe, film noir, Madame Bovary by Flaubert, Ethan Frome by Wharton, and so much more.

22:Who are some of your favorite designers or artists in general?

OPHELIA CHONG:
All art from the 16th – 18th century. Fritz Sauter ( a Swiss printmaker), 15th century Gothic churches, Orson Welles, Paul Rand, [Richard] Neutra
music for the clavichord, the flavor of the week and anything that makes me want to grab an X-acto knife.

22: 
How did you start working on the slips of paper series? What was your first collage for that? 

OPHELIA CHONG
I started in 1999, but if I had to trace it back, since I could use scissors. I picked up a small Moleskine sketch book  in 1999 and started sticking bits of paper 
in it to relieve the stress I was going through at my job as a Creative Director. I filled books and books with “slips of paper”, not really going towards an end goal, just to keep myself from the digital world. All my work is non-digital.

22: 
How do you balance your professional life with your artistic career, do the two ever clash? Or do they enhance each other? 

OPHELIA CHONG
I melded both into one. I have a rep in NYC for my illustration, and I now have a studio that I sit in all day working. I love it. Work = Love = Happiness

What are you currently working on? Any upcoming projects? 

OPHELIA CHONG
:
I am writing more, I write commentary for KCET ( a local TV station in Los Angeles) and for howtosplitanatom.com . I have  work traveling from Barcelona to NYC, it will take 2 years to finish my travels. My 
letterpress work is at the Hunt Gallery at Webster University in St.Louis. My project now is to keep cutting paper and I know I will never tire of it; the only time I get into  trouble is when I cut up something someone was still reading. Never leave anything you want to read around me, it just might end up in a collage.

Lehmann Maupin Gallery in collaboration with Sikkema Jenkins & Co.,is pleased to present, Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipi’s Blue Tale, a joint exhibition of new works by Kara Walker, on view 21 April – 4 June, 2011 at 201 Chrystie Street. At Lehmann Maupin Gallery, Walker will present three new video works, which draw on her own experience in the Mississippi Delta, “a region mythologized in song and popular culture but tragically depressing.” She explains, “I drove down to the Delta thinking about the terrors of Jim Crow and slavery, yet the silent indifference of the landscape and the economic stasis, lack of mobility, and the persistence of a racist memory in the area was what stuck.”

Walker, will feature new graphite drawings and hand-printed texts on paper. This body of work grew out of the artist’s search for understanding of the way that power asserts itself in interpersonal and geopolitical spheres. As she embarked on this quest the figural elements began to disappear from her work. Now, they emerge again in what Walker describes as a “giddy embrace” of the figural and the narrative.
