Following his acclaimed project SEEK, featured as a 2011 TED Talk, Hembrey’s new work attempts to visualize his 20 year exploration of dark matter and dark energy (scientifically hypothesized to comprise over 95% of the cosmos). Hembrey’s paintings and sculptures are a collective meditation on the unseen structure of our universe. Painted with trompe l’oeil technique, the series Unstill Lifes attempts to visualize the tangible structures of matter pared down to bits. Ghostly wisps of smoke appear to the viewer at certain angles and improbable assemblages of matches, tree branches, and string appear to float off of the inky blackground.

Larsen is an accomplished painter who has always challenged herself to invent new styles and ways of composition. Her recent oeuvre marks a synopsis of previous works ranging between abstraction and figuration. Using modernist Russian constructivist paintings as a point of departure for numerous compositions, she also engages ideas of reverse perspective and conflicting vanishing points, as can be found in Japanese narrative scrolls. Her pool of inspirations is vast, ranging from masterpieces of Renaissance through 20th century art, to traditional Japanese puppet theatre, to photographs she has taken of classrooms and faculty meetings during her 35-year long Professorship in Florida.

The music is littered with dented paint cans, smashed up trashcan lids, old hacksaw blades, and broken glass. Like junkyard songbirds, they sing sweet through all the rubbage.

The 22 is headed out this Saturday to check out Atlas Obscura’s tour of Newton Creek. We’ll have a full update afterwards, but in the meantime buy your tickets and join us! We will be exploring the petroleum and waste transfer districts of the Newtown Creek watershed in North Brooklyn. Heavily industrialized, the area we will be walking through is the heart of the Greenpoint Oil Spill and home to scores of waste transfer stations and other heavy industries. We will be heading for the thrice damned Kosciuszko Bridge, which is scheduled for a demolition and replacement project which will be starting in 2013. Photographers, in particular, will find this an interesting walk through a little known and quite obscure section of New York City.

“Battle on Bergen” is a site-specific performance incorporating elements of dance, street theater, puppetry, and live music, depicting certain events from the Battle of Brooklyn and drawing parallels between the American Revolutionary War and events today. Sometimes forgotten in the very neighborhoods where it took place, the Battle was fought on August 27th, 1776 weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. ”Battle on Bergen” is co-directed by Selene Colburn and features David Freeman, James Hannaham, Aaron Stanley, Willis Bigelow, Alan Balicki, Katie Merz, John Bauman, Tyler Sussman, and J.J. Hill-Wood.

Infinite Limbs presents: Greg Fox and C Spencer Yeh , Hubble and The Dreebs Born April 10, 1985, in NYC, Greg is known for his work with various projects, including Family of Love, Teeth Mountain, The Dan Deacon Ensemble, GDFX, Guardian Alien, Man Forever, The Boredoms Boadrum, and Liturgy. In 2011 he appeared on over 14 releases, and is on track to break that record in 2012. Greg has studied drumming with Thurman Barker (Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor), Marvin “Bugalu” Smith (Sun Ra, Archie Shepp), and Guy Licata (Bill Laswell, Dr. Israel, Apsci). He also makes music for video games – one of which won an award for Best Soundtrack at the 2011 Independent Games Festival in San Francisco. He got to thank his folks on television.

Born in 1967, Louis CK got his start in comedy after moving to New York City in 1989 and appearing on as many of the numerous televised comedy programs being shot in the city as possible. Soon making short films and touring the country on the comedy circuit, CK got his start in television as one of the original writers for the wildly irreverent Conan O’Brien Show when it premiered in 1993. Masterminding such long-running skits as the “Staring Contest” and “Actual Items” (some of which continued to appear regularly, years after his departure), CK continued to make short films as he later worked for The Late Show with David Letterman and The Dana Carvey Show, all the while gaining popularity as a talented comedian. B.C. EDWARDS lives in Brooklyn. He is the recipient of the 2011 Hudson Prize put out by Black Lawrence Press which will be publishing his collection of short fiction, The Aversive Clause in 2012 and his collection of poetry From the Standard Cyclopedia of Recipes in 2013. His work can be found in Red Line Blues, The Sink Review, Food-i-Corp, Hobart and others. His short story “Illfit” is being adapted into a piece by the Royal Ballet of Flanders. BEN FAMA is the author of the chapbook Aquarius Rising (UDP 2009) and NEW WAVES (Minutes Books). He is the founding editor of Supermachine Poetry Journal. His work has been featured in GlitterPony, notnostrums, LIT, Poor Claudia, and on the Best American Poetry Blog, among others. He has contributed tips to gawker, words to urban dictionary, and has an ongoing correspondence with Lady Gaga. ELY SHIPLEY’s first book, Boy with Flowers, won the 2007 Barrow Street Press book prize judged by Carl Phillips, the 2009 Thom Gunn Award, and was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. His writing appears in the Western Humanities Review, Prairie Schooner, Diagram, Gulf Coast, and elsewhere. He holds a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Utah and currently teaches at Baruch College, CUNY. Hosted by Angelo Nikolopoulos $7 cover includes a house drink.

Known for his strong and sensuous depictions of women, Brian M. Viveros is a master of contemporary iconography paying homage to the femme fatale. While he almost exclusively paints portraits, within the expressions of his women is conveyed such deep emotion and overwhelming sexuality that his work is undeniably erotic. Often without even a hint of nudity, the viewer is seduced with a mere pout and gaze from his subject’s faces.
In what will be Brian’s second showing at the gallery, the opening will feature an all new collection of original paintings, as well as special rare prints from the artist’s own collection; poster giveaway and signing; live “Smoking Army” performance; screening of Brian’s films along with his new short, and much more.

Odysseus at Hell Gate Performance @Socrates Sculpture Park
RESCHDEULED: AUGUST 29, FROM 6PM UNTIL DUSK.
Processional Arts Workshop joins with local volunteers to transform Socrates Sculpture Park into a kinetic installation that explores the history of New York’s forgotten islands through the lense of Homeric myth. Integrating performing objects, micro-parades, and cyclical performances. Odysseus at Hell Gate pairs texts from the Odyssey with historic accounts of North Brother Island, Hart Island, Mill Rock, and other forgotten places in the city’s maritime shadowlands. Park visitors will assume the role of the homeward-bound hero, using fragmentary charts and haphazard guidance to navigate the capricious currents of New York’s complex island history, from potter’s grounds to pleasure parks to penitentiaries. There is no order or sequence, as characters appear and disappear throughout the park, leaving lost mariners free to wander through a shifting immersive narrative. Odysseus at Hell Gate runs continuously throughout the Park, from 5 to 8 PM.

10PM – Bassist/composer Todd Sickafoose’s band is a marvel of musical cross-breeding, pairing indie rock muscle and whimsy with the extended forms, timbres, and sophistication of a jazz orchestra. Their newest recording “Tiny Resistors” (Cryptogramophone) has been called “thoroughly original, endlessly creative…one of the year’s most compelling listens” (JazzTimes), “stunningly brilliant…a modern jazz masterpiece” (Bassplayer), and “a one-disc explanation of why today’s Brooklyn jazz scene is so exciting” (HotHouse). A Bay Area native, Sickafoose’s penchant for genre-bending may or may not be attributible to a classical upbringing, CalArts years studying bass with Charlie Haden, or the last seven years with folk hero Ani DiFranco, performing as a duo and quartet everywhere from punk clubs to Carnegie Hall. Since 2005, he’s been active in New York, performing with a ton of innovative folks including Jenny Scheinman, Ron Miles, Nels Cline, Allison Miller and Myra Melford. For tonight’s special performance, Tiny Resistors, which features saxophonist John Ellis, trombonist Alan Ferber, guitarists Steve Cardenas and Jonathan Goldberger, and drummer Ted Poor, will be joined by special guest violinist (and whistler) Andrew Bird. Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present White Flag, an exhibition of new paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist Cleon Peterson. This is Peterson’s first solo show at the gallery.
If the title of this new body of work suggests a surrender, it’s not the conventional sort. Known for his depictions of graphic violence and depravity, Peterson’s dystopian art rips the lid off of accepted social decorum to unleash aggression and other pent-up impulses. As figures torture, maim, cut, and abuse one another, a surrender to the worst in humanity is staged on the surfaces of the artist’s work—here, it can be safely, cathartically, and even aesthetically enacted. Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present Memento Mori, an exhibition of new paintings by the New York-based artist Tat Ito. This occasion marks Ito’s solo debut in New York, and is his fourth appearance in shows at the gallery.
Tat Ito was born and raised in Japan, but he later made his art studies in the United States. Consequently, the artist and his paintings are a dynamic confluence of East and West, traditional and contemporary. The poetic analogy of “oil on water” describes Ito’s approach to both imagery and cultural references; in his vibrantly colored work, traditional Japanese aesthetics are a foundation upon which floats a contemporary (i.e., Western-influenced) viewpoint. Like a skim of oil on water, the beautiful, reflective surfaces of his paintings fascinate viewers. These top layers never mix but, rather, are presented in dialogue with the substance beneath. Play Time by Cao Fei, one of the key artists of the new generation emerging from Mainland China, will open at Lombard Freid Projects on Wednesday May 18th 2011.
For her fourth solo exhibition at Lombard Freid, Cao Fei’s recent exploration into the theme of “play” has multiple connotations; Play Time is layered with ambiguities. Does it relish a time of game planning and exhilaration, or an onstage performance? This exhibition leaves viewers with no clear-cut answers, but rather with ideas and associations of different dimensions.
Following her powerful and widely influential RMB City Series (2008-2011), Play Time returns to Cao Fei’s previous interest in the convergence of fantasy and reality and premieres her latest works. She continues to utilize different types of media including video, photography and sculptural installations that evoke childhood games, story telling and TV programs that have a profound influence on children. During the past decade, Amy Cutler (*1974 in Poughkeepsie, New York) has become internationally known for exquisitely detailed narrative works of art. Set in a richly imagined universe, created through a pastiche of memories, observations and insights, they are populated mostly by women engaged in enigmatic tasks and impossible situations: tigers are mended and restriped; figures emerge from the rocky crags of a fjord.
With faces that are both resolute and introspective, Cutler’s women symbolize the emotional complexities of real life situations. This publication will premiere new paintings, drawings, and prints, also including a selection of earlier works and a special section devoted to Alterations, a sculpture installation created for the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.

The Repurposed Library by designer and mixed media artist Lisa Occhipinti, is a collection of DIY projects that utilize every imaginable part of a book—from hardback cover to individual pages—to create new art objects and practical items for the home. Bibliophiles, DIY enthusiasts, design aficionados, and creative dabblers will find inspiration in the book’s unique art-meets-craft aesthetic. Often using no more than a craft knife, glue, and a little ingenuity, Occhipinti demonstrates how “orphaned” books can become home décor accessories, such as wreaths and vases, as well as functional items, such as shelves, storage boxes, and clocks. This event is free, but $20 buys you a copy of Lisa’s new book, an old book to make art from, instructions and use of craft supplies. Guests of all ages are welcome. Only a love of books is required!

Please join us for an artist talk featuring Tal Halpern, Wayne Hodge, Katarina Jerinic, Jennie C. Jones, and Angie Waller in conjunction with their exhibition featuring new work produced here at the Center during their 2010 residency. These New York-based emerging artists were offered space, time and support to explore the production and exhibition of artist’s books and related work in year-long residencies.

New York, NY. The New York Academy of Art is pleased to present UNCHARTED, a group exhibition featuring original paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints by sixty talented emerging artists.
Immersed for two years in an intensive learning environment that combines rigorous skills and conceptual training, these MFA candidates plumbed the depths of a time-honored artistic language from which they are creating innumerable distinct dialects. The 2011 graduates of the New York Academy of Art reveal that they are sixty individuals striding sure-footed onto an entirely contemporary landscape.
A catalogue will be available, featuring an essay by Donald Kuspit.
