Shall we cut our rhymes from that ridge of coal,
that crawls beneath the owl-watched pine?
What does he see?
That ancient mare,
in earth stirring.
That blackening equine gaze,
those leonine thighs.
Pacing in circles,
the width of my gyre,
we wear a white-bird torque,
the study of sodium,
armor against a clean death by drought.
slipped through my fingers.
We pressed on, alone,
through the desert,
white shadows cut from the cloth of fear.

Australian photographer Kate O’Brien’s photos are fantasy snow globes, arranged just so. Not a shiny curl out of place, not a flower askew, they’re bottled candy bliss. An avid collector, Kate finds inspiration everywhere. Online auctions, liquidators and op-shops are her hunting grounds when in search of the perfect piece to finalize her vision. Driven by a deep love of Victoriana and the macabre, Kate often spends years looking for weird and wonderful items to include in her photographs. O’Brien lives in Brisbane with her husband, two cats and five ducks. There she continues to immortalize an ever-growing assortment of muses, each image a sugar-dusted memento of an eerie world in a simpler time.

MoMA Premiere: Through the Weeping Glass: An Evening with the Quay Brothers
September 24, 2011
As part of a limited three-city tour that includes premieres in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, MoMA presents the Quay Brothers’Through the Weeping Glass: On the Consolations of Life Everlasting (Limbos & Afterbreezes in the Mütter Museum), a new work by the American-born, British-based independent filmmakers. In the tradition of their prior museum documentaries—The Phantom Museum (2003), on London’s Sir Henry Wellcome Collection, and Inventorium of Traces (2009), on Poland’s Lancut Castle—the Quays return to the city where they began their education as graphic designers to explore the medical collections of the Mütter Museum, part of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Examining obscure archives, antique volumes, and artifacts, Through the Weeping Glass investigates marvels of pathology and anatomical oddities, finding poetry in the ill-fated, true-life stories of the “ossified man” Harry Eastlack and famed Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker. The documentary Behind the Scenes with the Quay Brothers, shot during production ofThrough the Weeping Glass, also premieres. Directors Stephen and Timothy Quay will be present to discuss the film with writer David Spolum and moderator Barbara London.

From the Artist~ As a painter I consider egg cartons as two-and-a-half dimensional objects which offer me remarkable possibilities for imagery. The waves of the egg cartons limit the viewer’s perception; they also make him aware of his positioning towards the image. The intentional limitation in subjective perception gives room for imagination and recall: the process of occlusion. By a fusion of direct and indirect perception conventional imagery is overtaken. At first sight this leads to a physical and mental incompleteness, that forces an integration which can only take place within the inner experience, apart from time and space. (compare the ‘head of Janus’, that looks at the present and the future congruently.)
The shape of my new canvases – the eggbox structures- increases the amount of possible visual images in an almost exponential way. This forces the viewer towards an active perception, constantly changing the view-point and focus. Furthermore the true and represented space in these paintings interact during perception. One could say that the complete image just emerges sublimated in the viewers mind. Gestalt psychology states that human perception aims for completeness. Perceptions are being added subconsciously. My eggcubist works evoke conscious and dynamic adding.
