How to Write a Novel features drawings of text, photographs, receipts, books and the mesh-mash debris in an author/artist’s life. In Dancing with Divorced Men, the artist records herself dancing with middle-aged, divorced men in their homes, allowing them to function as surrogates for her father. In Trust Falls, she collaborates with divorced men to stage intimate activities that require a sense of trust or caretaking. In Friday Nights at Guitar Center she explores the predominantly male customers of the musical instrument store via their impromptu in-store performances.
WHAT: Sandra Gottlieb
WHERE: Kathleen Cullen
WHEN: June 16 – July 13, 2012
WHY: In Sandra Gottlieb’s Black and White series, she zeroes in on the micro-creativity of waves crashing on the same stretch of Atlantic seaboard shore, cast in high relief by the setting sun. Gottlieb’s pictures are conceptual in nature, capturing moments that are structured to make the observer feel small, accept that one moment is quickly overtaken by another, or that some momentary phenomena remain beyond our reach, in terms of human perception. This is why wise beachgoers come away from a day there weary but strangely calm, drained and yet somehow massaged to serene wistfulness by what to others seems like the irritating monotony of the ocean.

WHAT: SUPERHUMAN HAPPINESS/SMOOTA
WHERE: Zebulon
WHEN: JUL 21, 2012
WHAT: Smokey’s Secret Family
WHERE: Barbes
WHEN: 7/21
WHY: Smokey Hormel’s résumé reads like a history of American popular music over the decades. He has worked closely with Beck, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond. His projects have included the Brazilian-influenced Smokey and Miho, as well as an ongoing tribute to Western swing. His latest endeavor is an idiosyncratic take on early Congolese rumba. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, African musicians looked to Cuba for inspiration. They recognized African roots in the music but were also captivated by its cosmopolitan aspect, which mirrored the evolution of their own culture. Using the electric guitar—fast becoming the symbol of urban culture—they forged a new hybrid that became an early soundtrack of decolonization. Hormel has hybridized the music further and taken it to the Americas for the second time. Keeping its pre-rock roots intact, he relies on a core sound of “wild guitars bursting through small amps afloat on a sea of hand drums and shakers.

WHAT: KOTORINO
WHERE: Barbes
WHEN: 7/26
WHY: Even in a music scene saturated with ‘chamber-pop’ bands and odd instrumentation, Kotorino stands out with its use of all variety of winds, strings, and other musical gadgetry. The music itself is omnivorous in its source material, quite pretty, and downright haunting. Kotorino includes Jeff Morris on guitar, words and birds, Estelle Bajou and Molly White on vocals, violins and verve, brother Jerome Morris on the batterie required, Sara Zar on musical sawesome, Liz Prince on tuba and invasive procedures, Mike Brown on upstanding bass, Stefan Zeniuk on reeds and rites and Jesse Selengut – trumpestuousness.
WHAT: Taylor Mac: Music of the 1820s/All the Rats & Rags
WHERE: Joe’s Pub
WHEN: July 23
WHY: A bedazzled creature builds a community by singing 24 concerts of the last 24 decades of popular music. Ultimately all 24 decades will be stitched together culminating in a 24-hour long extravaganza (in 2014) but for now join Taylor Mac, musical director Alexander Horwitz, and band as they use popular music from the 1820s to honor Louise Braille who, in 1825, invented the Braille system. A note: all audience members will be blindfolded for the duration of this ninety-minute concert. All the Rats & Rags is an electric new musical based on Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist and featuring music from Tim Fite’s 2008 album, Fair Ain’t Fair – a carnivalistic funhouse of soul, bluegrass and hip hop.Set in a future on the brink of a universe-altering revolutionary war, this sci-fi rock opera centers on an adorably clueless spy-bot named Twizt.

What: JAYSON MUSSON: HALCYON DAYS
Where: Salon 94 Bowery
When: July 11 – August 17
Why: The thing I found most alluring about Coogi sweaters was how painterly they were. They seemingly lingered on the borders of gestural abstraction. I made the joke, “That Coogi looks like a Pollock”. Over the course of the following weeks, I began collecting images of the sweaters, studying their composition. They seemed to defy the traditional logic of the textile, opting instead to appear spontaneous and created by hand rather than machine-made. Each sweater, though a manufactured object seemed to seek its own authenticity. Even the old Coogi slogan “Wearable Art” seemed to confirm the desire for each sweater to be considered an objet unique, a specialized commodity.
What: The Secret Science Club presents Mathematical Sociologist and Social Network Expert Duncan Watts
Where: The Bell House
When: Wednesday, July 18, 8PM
Why: Every single day, people create, collect, and share 2.5 quintillion bytes of data.Text. Tweets. Photos. Videos. Clicks. Links. Consumer transactions. Blog posts and comments. And so on . . . down, down, down the rabbit hole . . . While all this ballooning information creates storage nightmares for some, a new breed of computational social scientists is enthusiastically exploring Big Data and extracting surprising insights about human behavior. Duncan Watts—principal researcher at Microsoft’s new NYC-based laboratory, former sociology professor at Columbia University, and author of Everything Is Obvious (*Once You Know the Answer)—is at the forefront of these studies, examining concepts ranging from influence and incentives tosocial contagion and stereotypes.

The product of ten years of photographic documentation and investigation, Violentologydelves into the political and historical dynamics of the conflict and focuses on the terrible consequences of the war on Colombia’s civilian population. It debunks the common view of Colombia’s conflict as a “drug war,” and provides the tools necessary to understand the distinct actors involved in this multi-sided conflict. For those of you that can’t make it, Bluestockings will be hosting a special advance book signing and author talk with Stephen on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 from 7 to 8 pm, 172 Allen Street, New York, NY 10002.

He has stuck to the rhyming scheme and verse length of the original songs, thus matching the melodies perfectly. He has re-arranged the music with a cinematic sensibility, using a combination of guitars, clarinets, lapsteel and Charango.

What: Tony Ingrisano, “Crosseyed and Painless”/”Zooey” curated by Lesley Heller
Where: Lesley Heller
When: July 18 – August 17, 2012
Why: Crosseyed and Painless features recent work by Tony Ingrisano in his first solo exhibition with the gallery. Informed by a variety of systems: aerial city views, power grids, and variations in river circuits, his drawings start with a simple mark and then grow into larger, more complex configurations, layering ink, graphite, watercolor, and collaged elements to create the final composition./Zooey highlights artists whose work is inspired by the animal. Real and fantastical, animals have existed within our cultural imagery for thousands of years. The artists featured in this exhibition carry on this tradition whether in painting or in sculpture, some using humor, others in a more spiritual way, often referring to mythology. Many personify the animal as a glimpse into how we see ourselves. Like visiting a zoo, this exhibiton offers an entertaining insight into the animal kingdom, but unlike most zoos, admission is free of charge.

What: Bhi Bhiman / Justin Robinson & the Mary Annettes
Where: Joe’s Pub
When: 7:00 PM – July 14
Why: Bhi Bhiman is an American original, yet he seems transported from an era in which songs were more important than the pretty faces that delivered them. His rich, bellowing tenor can soothe or explode at a moment’s notice. His lived-in, knowing delivery belies his years. His songwriting, too, is quick to captivate: a mix of humor and deep empathy puts him in the company of distinguished (and much older) lifelong songsmiths like John Prine, Nick Lowe and Randy Newman. And Bhiman’s technical, emotive guitar playing rises to the challenge that his striking voice presents.
What: Michael Kolster, Still Life: Photographs on Glass
Where: Schroder, Romero and Shredder
When: Thursday July 12
Why: Developed in the 1850′s, the wet plate ambrotype process is indeed archaic but in Kolster’s work it is rendered fresh and at the heart of our continued relationship to photography and perception. Although crisp in its result, the wet plate process is often left to chance and chemistry. It is both an arduous and exacting practice but also one much more improvisational and fluid than our current hyper corrected digital imaging. In these works Kolster captures images and objects from our every day-be it the interior of a safety envelope’s security pattern, a map detail, or the arabesque curves of strapping plastic; they are contemporary objects thrown in contrast against the antique process.

Why: “Rock, Paper, Scissors is a double folded statement that ponders the broad range within the formalistic trends that have come to define the contemporary moment of artistic production,” the curators note. “The exhibition explores the extent to which contemporary art oscillates between a concern for art-historical lineage and the desire for a departure from formal expression.”
What: GROUP EXHIBITION: POST-OP
Where: Mixed Greens
When: July 12–August 17, 2012
Why: The recognizable movement of the mid-60s was dismissed by many critics of the time, but the movement—grown out of geometric abstraction, trompe l’oeil, and the uncertainty and perceptual change of the mid-20th Century—has proven to be of current importance. Post-Op brings together eight artists working in a variety of media, all of whom contemplate perception, form, function, and rationality to create works tied to the lineage of the Op movement.
What: PERMANENT COLLECTION
Where: Nancy Margolis
When: July 12 – August 4, 2012
What: Michelle Jaffé WAPPEN FIELD
Where: BOSI Contemporary
When: July 8 – August 5 2012
Why: BOSI Contemporary is pleased to present Wappen Field, the solo exhibition of New York based artist Michelle Jaffé. In her upcoming project, Jaffé will present a large-scale participatory installation and a series of sculptures, both of which explore the use of armor to mask and shelter the body from interference. Reflecting on the theory of the collective unconscious and mythological truths, Jaffé utilizes a minimalist aesthetic to create work that uniquely questions the interplay between archetypes in socio-cultural structures.
What: Anatomical Venuses, The Slashed Beauty, and Fetuses Dancing a Jig: A Journey into the Curious World of the Medical Museum
Where: Observatory
When: Friday, July 13 (Friday the 13th!)
Why: Since 2005, artist, independent scholar and Morbid Anatomist Joanna Ebenstein has travelled the world seeking out–and photographing whenever possible–the most fascinating, curious, and overlooked medical collections and wunderkammern, backstage and front, private and public. In the process, she has amassed not only an astounding collection of images but also a great deal of knowledge about the history and cultural context of these fascinating and uncanny artifacts.

What: InGlorious Materials
Where: Charles Bank Gallery
When: 12 JULY – 19 AUGUST 2012
What: It’s Always Sunny on the Inside
Where: Anton Kern
When: July 10 – August 17, 2012
What: GROUP EXHIBITION – BECOMING: WORLDS IN FLUX
Where: C24
When: 7.10.12-8.24.12
What: Pressing Matter
Where: Parallel Space
When: July 14 – August 12, 2012
Why: Parallel Art Space proudly presents Pressing Matter, a three-person art exhibition featuringJudith Braun, Antonia Perez, and Hilda Shen, who fashion the material components of their work almost entirely by hand (pressing, folding, turning); resulting in finished products that are monumental, insistent, and imbued with a gravitational presence that belies the human span of their creation.

Three Colorists: curated by Michael Walls — Eozen Agopian, Alan Kleiman, Diane Mayo
Where: Lesley Heller Workspace
When: June 6 – July 6, 2012, Opening Reception: Wednesday, June 6, 6-8pm
Three Colorists, curated by Michael Walls, highlights the work of three artists who have several things in common: they began their professional life as painters; the oeuvre of each importantly involves the role of color; and the work of each is not only labor intensive, but also revealing of a hard-won mastery of the chosen craft.
LABAPALOOZA! MINI FESTIVAL OF NEW PUPPET THEATER FROM THE LAB
Where: St. Ann’s Warehouse
When: MAY 31-JUNE 3
It’s the last show before we move to our new location at 29 Jay Street! What better way to say goodbye to 38 Water Street than with our 14th annual Labapalooza Festival? This year’s line-up of works-in-progress ranges from the traditional to the irreverent, from the ground breaking to the nostalgic, and from delightful to downright punk-rock.
Masterpiece Theater Curated by: Geoffrey Young
Where: Morgan Lehman
When: May 31 - June 30
If theatrical is the question, masterpiece is the answer. Modesty in art is over-rated, as anyone with a Schnabel complex knows, so be prepared for the challenge of ascertaining the significance of what these artists have been cooking up over the past four months. Yes, each can draw, paint, and employ color to bold effect, but that’s of secondary importance (the least we can expect of an artist). What drives these artists is Imagination. Another word for imagination is risk, another word for risk is danger, another word for danger is aesthetics. And aesthetics, as we know, is for the birds. But these artists aint tweeting.
Thurston Moore + Bill Nace + Joe McPhee
Where: Roulette
When: May 31, 8pm
Three pillars of the noise and avant-jazz scene collide : Thurston Moore, singer/songwriter/guitarist for Sonic Youth, teams up with free-noise guitarist Bill Nace and avant-jazz saxophonist Joe McPhee for an evening of mind bending cacophony.

Boo-Hooray is happy to announce an exhibition of original art, publications, photography, ephemera and manuscripts related to Jacqueline De Jong’s vanguard publication The Situationist Times, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first issue. A total of six issues were published: Issue 1 in May of 1962, and the final issue in December of 1967. A seventh issue was compiled but not published. The Situationist movement produced periodicals: Internationale Situationniste (twelve issues published between 1958 and 1969) and the German Gruppe SPUR publication SPUR (six issues from August 1960 to August 1961). There were other examples: Drakabygget (Scandinavia), Heatwave (UK), Black Mask (USA), King Mob Echo (UK). Dutch artist and graphic designer Jacqueline de Jong joined the Situationist International in 1960. De Jong suggested the publication of an English language newsletter in November of 1960, to be co-edited with British Situationist Alexander Trocchi.

Translation:
I know these trees.
Last year they spoke in familiar tongues.
I want to see them change, green, yellow, gold, vermilion-infamous red.
Do I know all the names? Is this year a keepsake?
To know what it feels like to take place in the past.
To walk these ways, testing still, with a what could have been.
This is what I know-that which is dust, must turn over to dust.
Open the jar filled with cacophonous hornets.
The blue sunlight,
an auger translating shadows into gold.

KRONOS QUARTET: Awakening: A Musical Meditation on the Anniversary of 9/11
Part of the 2011 Next Wave Festival
Sep 21—24, 2011 at 7:30pm
Pioneering contemporary music ensemble Kronos Quartet (More Than Four, 2007 Next Wave) returns to BAM with a heartfelt program comprising 12 compositions—including works by Michael Gordon, Terry Riley, Osvaldo Golijov and Gustavo Santaolalla, and John Oswald—plus gripping arrangements of traditional songs from around the globe. This stirring collection of works reflects upon those instances where traditional language fails us, and music steps in to restore what violinist David Harrington refers to as “equilibrium in the midst of imbalance.”

This updated version of the original deliriously madcap fantasy once again features the soaring song stylings of demented diva Joey Arias surrounded by an eye-popping theatrical extravaganza conjured by a team of puppeteers under the direction of Basil Twist. Channeling lurid celluloid dreams, macabre nightmares and bizarre premonitions, the adventure begins with an alien abduction and concludes with a stupendous Busby Berkeley-esque finale. Along the way, the throaty chanteuse belts out pop, rock and jazz standards in addition to some original tunes by Alex Gifford as Twist and company work their magic with vintage marionettes, anatomically correct puppets and fantastical scenic elements.

Maya Zack: Living Room
The Jewish Museum
July 31, 2011 – October 30, 2011
In the installation, Living Room, artist and filmmaker Maya Zack uses large-scale computer-generated 3D images accompanied by sound to evoke a Jewish family’s apartment from 1930s Berlin. While listening to the stories and memories of Manfred Nomburg, visitors can experience the apartment visually. 3D glasses enhance the oversized images reimagining rooms in the apartment and give them immediacy and depth.
Everybody Loves the Monster!
Thursday, August 18, 2011, 10 a.m.
In 1818, when Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus was published for the first time, Mary Shelley could not have imagined the monster she was unleashing on the world. The creature in Shelley’s novel is remarkably sympathetic and an eloquent speaker, capable of measured, intelligent, and articulate argument. But based on Boris Karloff’s 1931 film performance and confirmed by countless other films, comics, and illustrations, the general perception today is that Frankenstein’s creature is a “monster” who grunts or speaks—if he talks at all—in disjointed monosyllables.
Why has popular culture largely denied the creature his reasonable voice? This symposium brings together four scholars and the curator and bibliographer of The New York Public Library’s Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection to reflect on graphic and film representations of the “monster” from the past two centuries. The first half of the day will feature presentations on key visual adaptations of the creature, while the latter half will engage questions about what these appearances mean for understanding him as a political and historical subject.
Yana Dimitrova and Angela Washko: Cheap Paradise of Familiar Tasks and Places
Opening reception: August 19th, 6:30 pm on
Flux Factory
Consider escaping your common, everyday tasks and places without using your common, everyday devices. Through installation, painting, drawing, and video, Yana Dimitrova and Angela Washko portray the mundane patterns and structures of everyday experience and consider models of living that exist outside of our “to-buy-is-to-gratify” mentality. Stripping fast food architecture and smart phone technology of it’s branding and context, Washko and Dimitrova present what remains – hollow monuments to consumer culture.

Ritual A Group Exhibition by HONEYCOMB
Brooklyn, NY, July 2011, HONEYCOMB and Causey Contemporary proudly present Ritual, a group exhibition featuring original artwork produced by over twenty of the freshest urban, newbrow, young contemporary artists hailing from seven countries. The public is invited to the artists’ reception on July 12th from 6 – 9 p.m Ritualistic behavior is one of the few things that have universally permeated all human sociological development. It has helped form civilizations, spawned entire belief systems, and through the ages has continuously influenced human conduct while simultaneously shaping the world as we know it. While the actual processes may vary, the incorporation of ritual into society is something that transcends nationality, geographic location and linear timeline. Cultures of both the past and present have used symbolic, traditional or religious rituals for any number of reasons including divination, personal pleasure, the achievement of spiritual or emotional needs, the formation of social bonds, expressions of respect and devotion, the advancement of social status, acceptance or for educational purposes. Although there are great differences among the countless rituals in existence, it is evident that regardless of intent or appearance, ritualistic behavior is undeniably intertwined with both our past and our future, and something that unites us all.
Othelo Gervacio @ FUSE GALLERY.
“Postboredom”
Exhibition: July 13 through July 27, 2011
Opening Reception: Wednesday, July 13th, 7 to 10 pm
Boredom inspires creation. In Othelo Gervacio’s case, Postboredom is art garnered from his lingering disenfranchised youth. Gervacio has held onto the adolescent manifestation of making art and music because “you hate what is happening around you.” He states, “Are the only punks left now ‘Fashion punks’? No thanks, I’d rather I’d sit at home, listen to sludgy metal and paint something dark.” Othelo Gervacio is a new face in the downtown New York art scene. After four years under the wing of tattoo/fine artist Scott Campbell, and prior schooling in the arts, Gervacio has channeled his experiences to create his own definitive style. With the use of dark imagery and gothic lettering forms,
his art reflects an influence from the grittier side of tattoo culture, metal music, and lingering teenage angst.

Tuesday July 12th Reception/Viewing for Michael Beitz
FROM THE ARTIST:
The installation visually is based on a particular sort of stage light that I only know from single person performances in the the 60s and 70s and that for me is also very metaphorical. I combine this with audio footage of a very special moment in Dylan’s carrier. Somebody called him “Judas” in a show in Manchester, England in 1966. You can watch that here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm1pLiyrGyw
The reasons for that you can read about here:
And I will ad my own story to this. Not my personal one, but a kind of metaphorical little story. I’m replaceing his real answer to the Judas cry with words I’ll rearrange from footage of the old man Dylan’s voice. So you will see the puppet in that stage light and hear the Judas cry followed by a rather metaphorical answer.

On view until July 24th, 2011
Exhibition preview – Detroit-based visual artist Bethany Shorb’s “Supplemental Restraint System” is born from classic American and vintage European sports car parts harvested from wrecked vehicles. Her work is tightly wrapped in an outer skin made exclusively from previously deployed airbags, beaded and sutured back together forming another protective barrier in an imagined automotive crash narrative, then further fetishized in glass scientific vitrines. Also included in the show are neon and automotive emblem text assemblages as obsessive tropes on car-culture.

The Other Side of Ground @Mixed Greens.
JUNE 16–AUGUST 26, 2011
OPENING: THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 6-8PM
Mixed Greens is pleased to present the site-specific window project The Other Side of Ground by Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus, the artist duo known as LoVid. Their dynamic, colorful pieces are a masterful mix of the low- and high-tech.
Known for their innovative performances, live video installations, tactile objects, patchworks, sculptures, and installations, LoVid encourages the viewer to reexamine his/her relationship to the digital world. By mixing analog and digital philosophies, processes, and techniques, LoVid’s pieces come to life. In one piece, for instance, it was necessary for viewers to touch points on a monolithic sculpture in order for a video to activate. Human touch became the subject of a digital output. MORE »

ABOUT THE SHOW:
The Architecture of Devotion is a large scale group art, music and performance event hosted by the Gowanus Ballroom.
The exhibition transforms the cathedral-like Gowanus Ballroom, a nineteenth century steel mill and current home of Serrett Metalworks, to interrogate various representations of the sacred and profane.
Works including stained glass, paintings embellished with gilt adornment, modern reinventions of medieval retables, a cabinet of curiosities, and an enchanted grotto form an installation that explores themes of spirituality, mysticism and religion. Revisiting historic interpretations of divine presence through a contemporary lens allows artist and audience to reconsider what might at first glance appear mundane.

Graham and web-specialist Nate Hill) to turn DAC into a civic, non-commercial public space in the form of the Dumbo neighborhood’s first library. The project encourages contemplation on how libraries’ function, physical space, and role within communities is changing as the content libraries have traditionally housed migrates to a digital form.
PABLO MALURIE
BARBES
MONDAY JULY 4th
PABLO MALAURIE. Pablo Malaurie hails from Buenos Aires playing original folklore on banjo and ukelele, songs that are sweet, timeless and oddly global. Soaring melodies evoke geisha girls and Buddy Holly in equal parts. He scored a Romanian film that premiered at this year’s Cannes, Loverboy, and released El Festival Del Beso in Japan. Pablo’s voice can pierce through you in a painful tremelo and then soothe your broken heart with a pleasing, unexpected harmony. KCRW’s Jose Galvan says, “Malaurie combines both Japanese and South American folk rhythms with a minimalist approach. Some songs recreate traditional Japanese melodies simply using a mandolin banjo and a haunting falsetto. Others integrate rhythms more akin to indigenous music of the Andes. Add to that introspective lyrics and his affected Argentine accent and you’ve got the perfect soundtrack for a road trip in the Japanese countryside a la Motorcycle Diaries.”

FREIGHT AND VOLUME
June 23 – July 30, 2011The life of an artist can be a nomadic one, for any number of reasons, amongst them financial, emotional and spiritual. In many instances, artists find more support and camaraderie in large urban areas, and for quite a few all roads eventually lead to New York (or London or Berlin). The four artists comprising “Migration”, the summer show opening June 23rd at Freight+Volume, are no exception.

PETER EDWARDS: SPECTER FLUX
FLUX FACTORY
Dates: July 1 – 3, noon – 6 pm
Flux Factory is proud to present Specter Flux , an interactive environment and performance by artist-in-residence Peter Edwards, aka casperelectronics. The installation consists of three suspended orbs that glow at varying hues according to the sounds of its surroundings, including the ambient noise of the space and those made by the viewer. Its interior mechanism – a hybrid circuit using both digital and analogue electronics – transforms sound into an evolving display of multicolored lights. The performative element includes a constructed pyramid centered around a complex sound and light synthesizer that the artist plays. Viewers are invited to interact with the machine throughout the show.
HACKPOSIUM
FLUX FACTORY
Saturday July 2 4pm

June 23 – July 10, 2011
“A highly stylized adaptation of Hamlet performed in Korean, Hamyul feels like a traditional drama that could have been performed in the ancient Korean court.” – nytheatre.comThursday – Saturday at 7:30pm
Sunday at 2:30pm
Hamyul/Hamlet is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. The play is set in one of the ancient dynasties in Korea. The original Prince Hamyul, a Korean adaptation of Hamlet by William Shakespeare was presented to Western audiences in the United States and Europe in 1977. Adapted and directed by Minsoo Ahn, Prince Hamyul was the first Korean theatrical production ever performed outside Korea, making an indelible mark on the history of Korean theater thanks to the late Ellen Stewart at La MaMa.

Don’t feel too chewed up. I think as we get older it will be easier to feel this way. Yes I feel like shit at times, probably lately more than ever, but it’s only a temporary paralysis. If I have a goal in life it’s to make sure that it’s always temporary, despite the inevitability. That’s a real goal, and I’m content to deal with it. I’m trying to follow the example of cutting-edge Japanese cooking and French nouvelle cuisine, which is more concerned with difference and variation in savor and texture than with taste sensation in mouthfuls. Yes it’s the same as it’s always been, what you said.

It must be something about the waterfront. Those Monetesque ripples, ripe for reflecting and dizzying one up with shifts from screen to scene. Something about the water makes everything seem so much more romantic and, in general, that’s what video festivals tend to need.

From the Artist~ As a painter I consider egg cartons as two-and-a-half dimensional objects which offer me remarkable possibilities for imagery. The waves of the egg cartons limit the viewer’s perception; they also make him aware of his positioning towards the image. The intentional limitation in subjective perception gives room for imagination and recall: the process of occlusion. By a fusion of direct and indirect perception conventional imagery is overtaken. At first sight this leads to a physical and mental incompleteness, that forces an integration which can only take place within the inner experience, apart from time and space. (compare the ‘head of Janus’, that looks at the present and the future congruently.)
The shape of my new canvases – the eggbox structures- increases the amount of possible visual images in an almost exponential way. This forces the viewer towards an active perception, constantly changing the view-point and focus. Furthermore the true and represented space in these paintings interact during perception. One could say that the complete image just emerges sublimated in the viewers mind. Gestalt psychology states that human perception aims for completeness. Perceptions are being added subconsciously. My eggcubist works evoke conscious and dynamic adding.
