The 22 Magazine

THE 22 VOL: 1 ONLINE NOW!

Well folks, it’s finally here. The first issue of The 22 in all it’s beautiful, gritty, hard wonness and I for one am glad to see it foisted upon the world. For the moment it is available to view on ISSUU and this evening I’ll have everything embedded so the tentacles of publication stretch far and wide. There are some amazing artists in here, and their words and pictures are now all yours. Over the next couple of months I’ll be shining a spotlight on each of these artists and telling you the story of why the were chosen to be one of the 22.(Look for a special post tomorrow morning as well, introducing you to the 22.)

Lots of very cool things coming up in the following months as well, including video interviews and some really terrific events involving the contributors.

Thanks again to all the folks that made this possible. We couldn’t have done it without you…and you….and definitely you.

We hosted our first two events this past weekend and boy did we have fun!
Although things were a bit haphazard after a great game of musical venue’s we were thrilled to see all of you in the same room.
We hope you enjoyed yourselves and that you will come visit the future events we will be hosting throughout the year (including an upcoming reading on May 15th with one of 2011’s “Discovery”/Boston Review Poetry Prize winners!)

In the meantime all the photos are up online and video (and very likely more photos) will be coming very soon!

VIEW PHOTOS HERE.

AND if you haven’t seen it yet, check out the state of things to come with a preview for VOL 1!

THANK YOU ALL!

That’s Beautiful Frank!

Contributor and cohort Jeff Burns first film, That’s Beautiful Frank, is about to get it’s sea legs! Starring Edgar Oliver (also one of this issue’s 22) in the lead role (Francis Eugene Carroll), TBF is a futurist thriller full of intrigue, romance, and barking girls.

Check out the Trailer!

From the director~

We are really happy to kick off this site and share with you some fun glimpses of our new Futurist-comedy-thriller ‘That’s Beautiful Frank.’ You can find a description of the film here and for the shorter explanation take a look at our teaser trailer.

Pretty soon we will have more video clips  for you to sink your fanged eyes into, so please keep checking back for more.

On this blog we will keep you up to date on screenings, events, and festivals along with breaking news from our cast and the Futurist art scene.  If anything pops in your head feel free to give us a shout, and with your permission we would love to add you to our mailing list of upcoming events. Make sure to look for us on facebook, and if you happen to be a user of YouTube or Vimeo we’d love to meet and greet you there as well.

I will leave you with the disclaimer written by the editors of the French paper Le Figaro that prefaced the  publication of Marinetti’s Futurist Manifesto in 1909:

“Mr Marinetti, the young Italian and French poet, a remarkable, hot-blooded talent known throughout the Latin countries by virtue of his resounding public appearances . . . is solely responsible for the ideas [expressed in the manifesto], which are singularly audacious and exaggerated to the point of being unjust to certain eminently respectable and – fortunately – generally respected matters. However, we thought it interesting to offer our readers the first edition of this publication, whatever opinion they may form of it.”

AND now…..the barking girls…

Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of the world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment. Created in 2008 by artist Will Varner, Scroll Bowl was a unique way for artists and illustrators to present their work large scale and interactively. In 2009 Will Varner left the Scroll Bowl project to pursue a professional illustration career and artist/curator John Jennison took over the project. After accepting Jennison as one of the premier issue contributors,The 22 Magazine partnered with him to present Scroll Bowl as both a performance and installation event. Drawing from an array of traditions, commentary and communication, Scroll Bowl V presents a modern look at the scroll as both an object and as a tool.

THE 22 MAGAZINE

The 22 is annual arts and literature online magazine that seeks to explore connections and intersections between the works of artists, musicians and writers. In some portions of The 22 the structure is presented as a diptych or sometimes triptych, allowing the viewer to actively participate in the task of opening the hinges that link conversation between the pieces.

The 22 Show was formed to showcase the talents of each issue’s contributors. This year’s show will feature performances, music, reading and film work from several of the artists and writers. By forming a collective group and by carefully selecting contributors whose work is enhanced through combination, The 22 Show is a comparison and celebration of the voice of the artist as solo and unified.
