Following his acclaimed project SEEK, featured as a 2011 TED Talk, Hembrey’s new work attempts to visualize his 20 year exploration of dark matter and dark energy (scientifically hypothesized to comprise over 95% of the cosmos). Hembrey’s paintings and sculptures are a collective meditation on the unseen structure of our universe. Painted with trompe l’oeil technique, the series Unstill Lifes attempts to visualize the tangible structures of matter pared down to bits. Ghostly wisps of smoke appear to the viewer at certain angles and improbable assemblages of matches, tree branches, and string appear to float off of the inky blackground.

Larsen is an accomplished painter who has always challenged herself to invent new styles and ways of composition. Her recent oeuvre marks a synopsis of previous works ranging between abstraction and figuration. Using modernist Russian constructivist paintings as a point of departure for numerous compositions, she also engages ideas of reverse perspective and conflicting vanishing points, as can be found in Japanese narrative scrolls. Her pool of inspirations is vast, ranging from masterpieces of Renaissance through 20th century art, to traditional Japanese puppet theatre, to photographs she has taken of classrooms and faculty meetings during her 35-year long Professorship in Florida.

The members of Rusty Belle swagger between raw blues, tiny tangos, country waltzes and backyard symphonies. Sometimes a walk with the Roma, a twisted tale in metered time, or a yell-along-after-dinner drunken opera. A dance band that tries to tie your shoes together. The music is littered with dented paint cans, smashed up trashcan lids, old hacksaw blades, and broken glass. Like junkyard songbirds, they sing sweet through all the rubbage.

In this new exhibition series, the prolific artist will present a panoramic assemblage of paintings that will occupy the entire breadth of the gallery. A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures will consist of a multitude of enamel on aluminum paintings, ranging from 10-x-8 inches to 10-x-10 feet.

The Shirey is pleased to present Bushwick Blackout, an immersive multi-media exhibition and video screening of luminous works that twinkle and glow in the dark.In this exhibition, traditional gallery lighting is abandoned. The only sources of light are ultraviolet lamps and the works themselves. Emerging from the walls, ceiling, and floors, the works create a three-dimensional constellation, encompassing the viewer and transforming the conventional gallery space into a spellbound landscape.

From myths of haggling savages to accounts of societies run on mutual aid, “barter” occupies a grey area between gift giving and market transactions. In this workshop, participants will experience the theory and practice of barter. Participants will (1) learn about contemporary and historic barter communities, (2) connect with potential barter partners and (3) discuss the problems and possibilities of barter: building trust, negotiating value, communicating clearly, and getting projects done without money. Hailed as NYC’s only hip hop brass band, PitchBlak has been rocking the city since 2010 with their original dance-worthy music, which combines robust horns, Afro-Caribbean beats, soaring jazz solos, and tongue-twisting raps. In addition to performing at notable venues such as 92YTribeca, Southpaw, and a packed headlining performance at Brooklyn Bowl, PitchBlak most recently played to enthusiastic crowds at the NXNE festival in Toronto. Coriolanus” has been re-envisioned as a modern day “election fable” in the second production of the Drilling Company’s 2012 Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot series. This “Coriolanus” is set during an election year, when money can buy power and working class citizens feel threatened by a dwindling patrician class who are seeking to solidify their political power by manipulating political figures. The title character, played by Arash Mokhtar, is a potential leader who is vaunted for his success as a warrior but is completely out of touch with the every day citizen’s experience of hunger and joblessness.

In her new book The Breathless Zoo: Taxidermy and the Cultures of Longing, Rachel Poliquin–best known for her blog “Ravishing Beasts”–explores the cultural history and poetic resonance of taxidermy from its rudimentary beginnings in cabinets of wonder to its revival in contemporary art. From hunting trophies to extinct species and kitten weddings to perpetual pets, The Breathless Zoo examines the meaning and matter of preserved animal-things and why anyone would want them to exist, and attempts to get to the heart of taxidermy by answering two fundamental questions: why would anyone want to preserve an animal, and what is this animal-thing now? Animal or object? Animal and object. This is the irresolvable tension that defines all taxidermy. As The Breathless Zoo demonstrates, with taxidermy there are no easy answers.

With the birth of the multiplex, theater companies found it harder and harder to keep these buildings open. Some were demolished, some were converted, and some remain to this day. “The Fall of the American Movie Palace” will take you through the history of these magnificent buildings, from their opening in the early 1900s to years after the final curtain.

Microcosm is Jonas Braasch’s new project. Expanding from his solo work, Microcosm is — in a nutshell — in a band with Jonas on the soprano saxophone, his alter ego on the Arturia Moog foot pedal, and Caira, an intelligent agent who improvises autonomously with the trio using auditory scene analysis techniques, machine listening, and logic-based reasoning. The agent is currently being developed through support from the National Science Foundation, together with team members Doug Van Nort, Pauline Oliveros, and Selmer Bringsjord. The Microcosm project was conceived to cross traditional boundaries between arts and science, and was conceptualized out of the desire to perform with an inspiring ensemble that can follow and provide musical cues very quickly. The concert will include adaptations from Jonas’ previous works: “Global Reflections”, “Sonic Territories”, and “Quartet for the End of Space”, which were released on Deep Listening and Pogus.

               I am not a man.
               Were there a place for this kind of truth, it would rest like a hand at rest, only as heavy as
it tends/needs to be.
There are numbers and signs and bedposts and other treasures left for streetwear.
            In your mouth I found a mound                          and in time it will uncover itself, reveal
the buried, your ancestry kept beneath, sublingual and integrating, sublingual and dissolving,
sublingual, making its way through your vessels, shining light in new space, building mounds of elbow
and knuckle, pancreas and gallbladder, your eye.              It is not what it does,
not the purpose of a purpose anymore; rather, a guise—calm teeth compelled to mercy and
your eye, the one made of dried tubers               and plantains, the one well versed in the forsaken,
the sacred. In your palm a repository for yes.
                                                                                                                      Yes.                              Yes.         Yes.
There is a shaker being shaken at this very moment and could you hear, you might dance or fright,
you might swallow or listen.              Shake then. The answers you seek exist not in the cumbersome
notes, the copious, not in all those hands, your eye, but in the flavor, the flavor of yes and/or
thank you.               Yes, thank you.
                   If salmon were a gun and smoked, how would you maneuver                        the catch, gesture,
maneuver fork and knife through barrel and flesh—scaled is the freshness of our decrees for the
sanctity, for the answers.                     And life can exist in new measures, line after line after line after. Do
not forsake the smoked gun, the smoking salmon, the smoke.
                                                                                                                    What you’ve left of me today is more
than enough for two. Maybe, I said. Maybe.               Keep in mind what you keep in isolation. There are
carts for this kind of mercy. Call it fear or something like it or not. Call it anything but sorrow
because sorrow does not exist. Not as it should.                                                                    Instead
we are left to want for more and watch the bleeding, the smoking, crying out for another and

Unique in the realm of approaches to improvisational conducting, Go: Organic Orchestra utilizes a composed non-linear score consisting of sound and motion elements. These include tone rows, synthetic scales, melodies, linguistic shapes, intervallic patterns, textural gestures, modes, ragas, maqams, and plainchant. The score serves to provide material for both the improvisations and the orchestrations. Motion and forms and are generated through the application of the composer’s rhythm concept “Cyclic Verticalism” whereby polymeters are combined with additive rhythm cycles.

A semi-autobiographical “mockumentary” from a puppetry and performance art pioneer. Lunatic Cunning mixes experiences from Godwin’s own life—such as his work with Julie Taymor on Across the Universe and appearances on Saturday Night Live, Chappelle’s Show, PBS and with Jim Henson’s Muppets. It’s a humorous examination of the occult roots of puppetry and performance art.

Stephan Moore and ISSUE Project Room have commissioned a new piece by sound artist Francisco López for Moore’s unique multi-channel sound system. Francisco López has worked with a variety of multi-channel systems, both in live performances and sound installations, from constellations of small transducers to Wave Field Synthesis systems with hundreds of speakers, and acoustic spaces ranging from concert halls to galleries to underground water reservoirs. For his new piece, López has worked in residency at ISSUE Project Room to develop a detailed sonic construction resulting from the actual space and multi-channel sound system. It is a true site-specific composition that unfolds with richness and detail as an intense and immersive experience inside a self-contained virtual world of sound.

Robert Ashley’s music has long been recognized as some of the most radical, forward-thinking work produced today. The Incubator Arts Project’s MUSIC series, curated by Travis Just, focuses on his chamber and instrumental music, in addition to re-thinking one of his best-known vocal epics: Automatic Writing. A new generation of experimental composers and artists is looking to Ashley’s work for inspiration; this week will show why.(ONGOING)

PHARMA
The Herb Lubalin Study Center at The Cooper Union examines the influence and impact of graphic design on the pharmaceutical industry in PHARMA, a new exhibit featuring original and rarely seen works by luminaries including Andy Warhol, Lester Beall, Will Burtin and Herb Lubalin. PHARMA’s exploration begins with the avant-garde promotionals of the 1940′s, when a market need emerged to promote “miracle” drugs, such as Penicillin, to the medical industry. In a compelling and thought-provoking way, PHARMA presents the relationship graphic design has had with the pharmaceutical industry ranging from the federal government’s increased regulations to new marketing tactics where the everyday consumer, not the doctor, is considered the target audience. While the exhibition provides examples of past and present, the public is encouraged to reflect and question how graphic design is used to market drugs and design has transformed these commodities into objects of desire.

Known for his strong and sensuous depictions of women, Brian M. Viveros is a master of contemporary iconography paying homage to the femme fatale. While he almost exclusively paints portraits, within the expressions of his women is conveyed such deep emotion and overwhelming sexuality that his work is undeniably erotic. Often without even a hint of nudity, the viewer is seduced with a mere pout and gaze from his subject’s faces.

In what will be Brian’s second showing at the gallery, the opening will feature an all new collection of original paintings, as well as special rare prints from the artist’s own collection; poster giveaway and signing; live “Smoking Army” performance; screening of Brian’s films along with his new short, and much more.

Odysseus at Hell Gate Performance @Socrates Sculpture Park
RESCHDEULED: AUGUST 29, FROM 6PM UNTIL DUSK.  

Processional Arts Workshop joins with local volunteers to transform Socrates Sculpture Park into a kinetic installation that explores the history of New York’s forgotten islands through the lense of Homeric myth. Integrating performing objects, micro-parades, and cyclical performances. Odysseus at Hell Gate pairs texts from the Odyssey with historic accounts of North Brother Island, Hart Island, Mill Rock, and other forgotten places in the city’s maritime shadowlands. Park visitors will assume the role of the homeward-bound hero, using fragmentary charts and haphazard guidance to navigate the capricious currents of New York’s complex island history, from potter’s grounds to pleasure parks to penitentiaries. There is no order or sequence, as characters appear and disappear throughout the park, leaving lost mariners free to wander through a shifting immersive narrative. Odysseus at Hell Gate runs continuously throughout the Park, from 5 to 8 PM.

(To soothe the incredibly strange journey?)

LISTEN TO “GO’ WAY OLD GHOSTS.”

I began my exploration of Andasol via a Twin Peaks marathon and a nasty cold but three weeks later (cough syrup and owl references aside) the album itself seems an attempt to document the story of a mythology, prominent and haunting, which (on some level) should avoid any comparison to Badalamenti save for perhaps, “Heron Lake.”

There have been discussions and debates about the origins of the tunes, a cryptic reference in the liner notes led me on a month long search for a (to be determined) Southwestern mystic, but then, I watched the documentary Jay contributed music to, Marwencol…and things became clear.

Event Details: “Honesty Box” is a live amalgam of the old Facebook app “Honesty Box”and the Catholic confessional. A white person-sized box with a light blue banner, replicating the Facebook aesthetic, is built to confessional proportions, so that participants can step in, and speak with honesty and confidentiality to the performance artist. The performance artist offers witnessing, listening, infinite patience and guidance, as she and the participant meet in the space between the communal intimacy of the old-school confessional and the flirtatious anonymity of the Facebook application. Most of us crave a safe and honest conference, and have lost faith in both religious models and cheap apps. What does it mean to unburden and receive comfort? Find out!

Radio Happy Hour, a live variety show featuring a made-for-radio murder mystery sitcom, is kicking off the summer season with their first ever live taping at City Winery. The episode will feature two musical guests with both Sun Airway and rising indie-darlings Hank & Cupcakes. There will be murder. There will be music. And everyone will go home regretting something they’ve done. These bands, and another guest yet to be announced, will join Radio Happy Hour host Sam Osterhout, RHH regulars Robin Reed and Matt Skibiak, as well as RHH’s own Jim Ed Poole, Rich Bologna.

With the start of a new season it’s a perfect time to catch up on (or discover) past episodes of Radio Happy Hour through their podcast, such as the most recent episode, “The Tax Murderer,” featuring musical guest Franz Nicolay and comedian Arden Myrin. Or maybe it’s a good time to realize that you should never miss a show because you never know what’s going to happen. NURTUREart Non-Profit is pleased to present VIDEOROVER: Season II, the second installment of its semi-annual video series. VIDEOROVER: Season II is curated by Rachel Steinberg and features artists: Fatima Al Qadiri and Lyndsy Welgos, Cecilia Bonilla, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Derek Larson, Dana Levy, Pernille With Madsen, Colin Snapp, and JULIACKS.

VIDEOROVER seeks to present a wide range of works from artists locally and internationally who are all working to expand the perceptual limitations of video. This season’s selection aims to disorient viewers by removing an essential reality context, only to redeposit them into seemingly familiar settings.

Dana Levy, Fatima Al Qadiri and Lyndsy Welgos explore the pluralism of eastern and western conventions by looking at traditions through a contemporary perspective. Cecilia Bonilla examines our relationships to the seductive nature of commercial images of women through minimal manipulation, while Juan Pablo Echeverri shows us a self-projected fantasy of mass-produced femininity. Colin Snapp acts as a ‘journalist’ of sorts, documenting moments of real-time, but relieving the viewer of imposed intentions. Pernille With Madsen dizzies and disorients us with a vision of how to imagine architectural surroundings. Derek Larson’s playful experimentations extend through other worldly humor while JULIACKS’ narrative pulls back and forth between a character’s inner psyche and external world. (READ MORE.)

The next exhibition at Nancy Hoffman Gallery will be new graphite drawings of trees by Jim Sullivan, opening on May 26th and continuing through July 1st.  This is the artist’s
first solo show in six years, and reveals a new vista onto nature. His last show included a series of horizontal landscapes, wide cinematic views into invented
detailed oriented oils.  The artist delighted in painting myriad details.  These were obsessive paintings,
and as the artist says: “The new drawings, the work of the past five years, present the same viewing issues
as the long landscapes, in that they have normal viewing distance but offer a close scrutinizing experience
(of infinite detail) on closer examination.”

This past Sunday, I took a moment to swing by Fowler Arts Collective in Greenpoint. I had the opportunity to speak with founder Cecelia (aka Lia) Post and Scott Chasse, one of the curators of the upcoming Paint It Now show which will be part of this year’s Northside Open Studios. Paint It Now opens Friday, May 27 from 7 to 10pm with an additional reception for NOS is June. We appreciate them taking the time to chat with us! Read or listen below!

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW

The 22 Magazine: First off,  I just wanted to talk to you about how Fowler started. What year did you start?

Lia Post (Founder): It’s only been about a year. I came in July of 2010. So, last Summer. This July will be our official anniversary, but our first show was just in October, so its been about eight months now.

The 22: What show was that [the first show]?

LP: It was called ENTER, it was a big group show with some of my studio artists and some friends from the neighborhood. It coincided with the first Greenpoint Open Studios-oh actually it was the second! …of the Open Studios in Greenpoint and it coincided with a big light festival called [Bright to Light]. It was a good way to start off the space.

The 22: And you came from Philadelphia?

LP: Yes. Originally I’m from South Carolina, and I’ve kind of lived all over the place, but my most recent was Philadelphia. I went to an MFA program at The University of Pennsylvania and moved to New York after that. So I’ve been in New York for about two years now.

The 22: On the blog it said you got laid off and decided to open to a collective. Exactly how did you do that?

LP: Well the first year in New York was really hard. It was in the midst of no one having any jobs, so I was trying to do a lot of freelance work and that’s sort of hard. Finally I was able to get a waitress job and I had that for a few months, got laid off, and I was just like “Oh my God I can’t even keep a regular restaurant job.” So it was kind of out of a sense of the bottom, and having to figure out something to do, and I was really missing the artists community I had in Philly before I came here and knew there was a good artists community in the neighborhood. [So it was] wanting to kind of find a way to connect with that community, [and then] I sort of impulsively [decided] to make this whole thing and got a few friends to help me. It kind of evolved from wanting to have a live/work space with friends and I found all these really interesting huge commercial spaces in Greenpoint, which is really exciting because I live in Greenpoint. So that evolved, and I did the budget and realized I could have a gallery along with studio spaces, if I rented out the studio spaces. I got some friends to help me build the walls and it was good to go. It filled up pretty fast. Scott was actually one of the first artists that came when none of the walls were built and was like, “yeah, I’ll do it, I’ll take a studio. “

The 22: So, are you funded by anyone?

LP: It’s pretty self-sufficient. I put a large investment [in] myself. I got a small business loan and [had some] small savings. Mostly I just had to fund the start-up costs, like the walls. Almost right away it was running itself with the studio spaces. So that’s really good, it worked out well. I’m starting to look into getting funding with indiegogo and I just got fiscally sponsored with Fractured Atlas so that will sort of start helping us in getting some grants and things.

The 22: Great, so this show is Scott and one other curator? [To Scott] So do you want to tell me a little about what this show?

Scott Chasse: Sure, it’s a show that we actually did, Thomas Buildmore and I, two times now in Boston-in 2008 and 2010. [Basically] we’re taking a handful of painters that we either know personally or respect and have been able to connect with, and we’re putting them all in the same room. We’re providing the paint itself, we’re providing the material and we mix it down to a certain viscosity, we try to control that and that’s about it. We just set them loose, they’re able to paint on the walls, react to the space, react to each others work and at the end our goal is to have this giant cohesive painting installation that just takes over the space but is unified by the control of the materials. We explain to the artists up front that we want to see this opaque black directly on the white, the harsh contrast, as opposed to them being able to water it down to gray or mix it with white, or mid-tones, we don’t want any of that we just want harsh black on white.

The 22: So the viscosity, was that for any reason?

SC: It’s A) the look, and B) it’s such a pleasure to work with at this viscosity. We get that feedback from the artists all the time. It’s just so enjoyable to use the paint and it’s actually a specific brand. I’m happy to say Lascaux sponsored this show very generously. They handed us some product and we have always cut it down the same way, since day one. We were actually just buying it for the very first show, out-of-pocket, and we are continuing to develop our relationship [with Lascaux]. It was really nice of them to give us a bunch of paint for this one, and everybody is really enjoying it again.

The 22:  I was reading the statement and it seemed part of what you guys were trying to do was make commentary on the state and style of art, as opposed to personal interpretations and a lot of it looks really pop and street art. Does that just come from your [personal] backgrounds [or connections]?

SC: There is definitely that influence. I don’t think we’re trying to make this at all a reflection of street art, but just painting in general. Street art is just a part of painting these days. We want the show to be taken as a painting exhibit. These are painters, regardless of what their backgrounds are, and there are definitely painters in this show that are very far away from anything having to do with street art but when they are painting on the wall next to someone you might recognize from the street, it’s easy to blur those lines between which is which, and that is definitely a goal of the exhibit. To see how people are reacting to each other in the space as well as how their varied backgrounds just coexist.

The 22:
So more about collaboration than anything?

SC:
Yep, exactly.

The 22:
So the exhibit is only the painting on the wall?

SC: It will be eighty percent painting on the wall and we’re going to hang some of the 2D and 3D work from the artists. Probably eight to ten pieces. We’ve actually saved one wall in the space [for that].

The 22: What are the dates of the show?

SC: It opens on May 27th. The opening reception is 7-10 and it runs through July 6th. And we’re going to have a 2nd party during Northside Open Studios. That is June 17th from 8-10. It will be another artist reception and that’s the Friday night of Open Studios weekend here, so it should be really fun.

The 22: I know most [of your artists] are from Brooklyn, but some of them are from Philly and Boston? Who’s coming from Philly and Boston?

SC: I think we’re at about twenty artists now, there are great people from all towns, I could go through the whole roster but I’d probably space on somebody. [laughs]

The 22: [laughs] Oh that’s fine, I totally understand!

SC: Tom Buildmore is actually based in Philly right now, but I met him in Boston, so that’s probably the connection right there. That’s why we are still dipping into the Boston pool and we’re actively participating in the Philly pool. Tom’s down there right now, he has a great space down there called Stupid Easy. It’s almost like this, just a smaller version. It doesn’t have a whole bunch of studios, it’s just a room they use for a production studio and they use it as a gallery as well. So he’s really connected with the scene in Philly.

The 22: And where did you guys meet?

SC: Boston, MA. At this building, The Distillery, in South Boston where we both had studio space.  And that building [in the main lobby] is where we did the first two Paint It Now shows.

The 22: Are you both painters?

SC: Yes we are.

The 22: So is there anything interesting on the horizon for the space?

Lia Post: Well this show I’ve been really excited about. Scott and Thomas have been planning it for a really long time so its nice it’s finally coming together. So this will be up for most of our summer. Right now I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do for the next show, but it’s probably going to allow the show to evolve. So I’ll probably sand out some of the pieces and then have a show of studio artists. More of a process based show, so they kind of collaborate in the gallery together, or have a long-term process going on. I think there will be another one of the light shows that we had last October so that will be our anniversary, and I [want] to have a studio [show along with that]. After that I have some friends coming from Philly that were part of my MFA program that are going to come and do a show. Photo based and paper based, I think. It should be really interesting. Then, two Australian artists are going to come and do a really short kind of performance based piece in the fall.

The 22: How many studios do you have now?

LP: There are eighteen built studios. All kind of varying sizes. A lot of people share the larger spaces. I think there are about twenty-five artists working in here now. The spaces range from a hundred square feet to over two hundred square feet.

The 22: And you do photography as well?

LP: Yep, we built this photo wall, so that’s been fun. It’s been kind of slow. I’m a photographer and I don’t even know how I’m going to use it yet but it’s been a nice resource to have.

The Pen and Brush is a vibrant resource for its members, nonmember participants, and a flourishing cultural center for the surrounding community.

The Pen and Brush announces our first In Door Art Fair. For two weekends this spring in conjunction with our upcoming exhibition, Is It Fine Art?  Does It Matter? artists will have the opportunity to rent an area of wall space; space for installation art or sculpture; and/or table space to exhibit, display, and sell their work to visitors.  This opportunity is open to all professional level art in all media, and all types of craft.

1st Weekend:  Memorial Day Weekend

While searching for another artist of similar moniker, I happened to stumble across this Ken Davis and liked what I saw. A heavy metal update of “keep calm, carry on”. The Streisand piece? Icing on the cake.
