Happy Baby is a movie based on the novel of the same name by Stephen Elliott, declared, by the New York Times, as “Surely the most beautiful novel ever written about S&M, juvenile detention centers, and drugs.” Happy Baby is the story of Theo, once an orphan in the Detroit foster care system now a grown man living in California. P.P.O.W is pleased to announce Out of Water, our sixth solo exhibition of figurative sculpture by Judy Fox. Well known for her exquisitely rendered human figures, including children that are at once iconic, psychological and subversive, Fox continues to explore mythological references that are used to reflect upon contemporary sociological issues. In her latest installations, virtuoso use of form extends to the surreal, with visual puns used to provoke conflicted emotional reactions. The centerpiece of this new installation is a comely standing life-size figure of a Mermaid. Legs pressed together as if fused into a tailfin, hands paddling downward, she looks dreamily over her entourage. A set of Worms spread out before her like the writhing sea horses that pull the chariot of a Greek sea goddess. They are curvy and sensual — some profiles resemble parts of naked human bodies.

Composer and pianist Lubomyr Melnyk is the pioneer of Continuous Music— a piano technique he has developed since the 70s that uses extremely rapid notes and note-series to create a tapestry of sound. Inspired by the minimal, phase and pattern musics of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley, yet frustrated by the ecstatic detachment from reality they can encourage, Lubomyr Melnyk created Continuous Music, based in the innovations of the minimalist composers but with its roots more deeply planted in harmony. His first recordKMH: Piano Music in the Continuous Mode (Music Gallery Editions, 1978) is the fruition of the idea he began developing in 1974 reimagines the sentiment expressed by Reich in his watershed Music for 18 Musicians, realized entirely for Solo Piano. Overtones blend or clash according to the harmonic changes. The technique of mastering his complex note patterns and speeds makes his music difficult for the normal pianist, and the kinetic athleticism of Melnyk’s performance is unparalleled.

Over the past decade, New York–based artist Wade Guyton (b. 1972) has pioneered a groundbreaking body of work that explores our changing relationships to images and artworks through the use of common digital technologies, such as the desktop computer, scanner, and inkjet printer. Guyton’s purposeful misuse of these tools to make paintings and drawings results in beautiful accidents that relate to daily lives now punctuated by misprinted photos and blurred images on our phone and computer screens. Comprising more than eighty works dating from 1999 to the present, Guyton’s first midcareer survey features a dramatic, non-chronological design in which staggered rows of parallel walls confront the viewer like the layered pages of a book or stacked windows on a monitor.

The exhibition’s title Gaia refers to the Greek earth mother goddess as well as the scientific Gaia Principle, proposing that “all organisms and their inorganic surroundings on Earth are closely integrated to form a single and self-regulating complex system, to maintain the conditions for life on our planet” (James Lovelock). Mi explores the significance of Gaia pictorially, as it relates to today’s ecological challenges. In works such as One -as well as Wind and Water–the artist celebrates and pays homage to the elements in all their glory by examining both microcosms and macrocosms in nature. Mi deconstructs space in the manner of classic Asian landscape painting to present a floating menagerie of symbols – disembodied lanterns, birds, insects, dragons and other hybrid creatures, rich organic matter – looming up from the primordial void. Mi also employs radical shifts in scale and density, subtle hues juxtaposed with jarring color, fluctuating perspective and other dramatic methods to convey her otherworldly vision. Negative space is addressed lovingly and carefully, with as much and perhaps more import than actual objects.

Unique in the realm of approaches to improvisational conducting, Go: Organic Orchestra utilizes a composed non-linear score consisting of sound and motion elements. These include tone rows, synthetic scales, melodies, linguistic shapes, intervallic patterns, textural gestures, modes, ragas, maqams, and plainchant. The score serves to provide material for both the improvisations and the orchestrations. Motion and forms and are generated through the application of the composer’s rhythm concept “Cyclic Verticalism” whereby polymeters are combined with additive rhythm cycles.

Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce Lakes, Trees and Honeybees, an exhibition of new photographs and prints by Matthew Brandt from his series Lakes and Reservoirs, Trees, Honeybees and Taste Tests in Color. The exhibition will open on Thursday, May 24, and will be on view through Saturday, June 30, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, May 24, from 6:00–8:00PM. This will be Matthew Brandt’s first exhibition with the gallery and his first solo exhibition in New York. Matthew Brandt creates his prints using physical elements from the subject itself. Inspired by landscape photography of the American West – especially its correlation to the methods of printing and making images during photography’s infancy in the mid-nineteenth century – the artist revives traditional photographic techniques through various production processes, including handmade papermaking and gum-bichromate.

The Strata project consist in a series of films, prints and installations investigating improbable relationships between contemporary digital aesthetics and icons of classical art and architecture. Like in geological processes, layers belonging to different ages interact with one another producing new intriguing formations.

ITINERANT 2012 focuses on live performative works that treat notions of intimacy, self-reflection, and introspection. Holi is the Hindu festival of colors. It celebrates the coming of spring, fruitful harvests, unity, joy, and a tale from the Bhagavad Gita. In addition to the throwing of colored powder (Holi Gulal) it is traditional to light bonfires in celebration of the miraculous escape that young devotee of the god Vishnu. A demon tried to throw him into a fire, but he escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable devotion. In most areas, Holi lasts about two days. One of Holi’s biggest customs is the loosening strictness of social structures, which normally include age, sex, status, and caste. Holi closes the wide gaps between social classes and brings Hindus together. Together, the rich and poor, women and men, enjoy each other’s presence on this joyous day. Additionally, Holi lowers the strictness of social norms. No one expects the decorum of normal life; as a result, the atmosphere is filled with excitement and joy.

HAZMAT MODINE draws from the rich soil of American music of the 20′s and 30′s through to the 50′s and early 60′s, blending elements of early Blues, Hokum Jugband, Swing, Klezmer, New Orleans R & B, and Jamaican Rocksteady. The band is fronted by two harmonicas which use call and response, harmony, melody, and syncopated interweaving rhythms. The band includes tuba, guitar, and percussion, claviola and Hawaiian steel guitar. Artist and curator, Charles Wilkin took the time to chat with The 22 about the upcoming collage show All That Remains presented by Ugly Art Room at Picture Farm in Brooklyn. Resourcing from a VAST pool of collage artists, the show is dynamic, bold and most of all, really fun. The show opens Oct 21st, with an reception from 7-9pm at Picture Farm (338 Wythe Ave.)
The 22 Magazine: You happen to be a collage artist yourself, correct? Tell me what it is that first got you hooked on collage and what you love about it?
Charles Wilkin: Yes I’m a collage artist. It’s funny because I sort of fell into collage by accident in college. I was late for a drawing class and forgot to bring my pencils and paper. I ran across the hall with nothing more than a stack of photos I’d just printed from my photo class. Instead of smacking my hand with a ruler for being unprepared my instructor said ” well use those photos”. Clearly she saw something in what I had done that day and encouraged me to make more collages. I guess what I love about collage is it’s immediacy and the happy little accidents that happen along the way. I love not knowing where I’m going until I get there and with collage I can sort of get lost in the moment. I think that’s what I really love about it most, for me it’s very freeing.

This updated version of the original deliriously madcap fantasy once again features the soaring song stylings of demented diva Joey Arias surrounded by an eye-popping theatrical extravaganza conjured by a team of puppeteers under the direction of Basil Twist. Channeling lurid celluloid dreams, macabre nightmares and bizarre premonitions, the adventure begins with an alien abduction and concludes with a stupendous Busby Berkeley-esque finale. Along the way, the throaty chanteuse belts out pop, rock and jazz standards in addition to some original tunes by Alex Gifford as Twist and company work their magic with vintage marionettes, anatomically correct puppets and fantastical scenic elements.

Last weekend the naval gangs of New York assembled to Battle for Mau Mau Island (see photos here). Come see the fallen soldiers, harvested booty, and glorious victors at a new two-story space in Bed-Stuy. Mau Mau gangs, gladiator raft jousting, cocktail catacombs, clothing optional watergun fight, underground casino & film screenings of eerily beautiful movies set on the water, slide show and videos of the battle, and an awards presentation for the victors. Wet & wild all night long.
$5 for gangs in matching costumes, Mau Mau vets, or before 11pm, $10 otherwise; 21+.

In his magnum opus, Gravity’s Rainbow, Thomas Pynchon introduces us to the German concept of Brenschluss in the telemetry of the flight of the V2 rocket. The rocket is propelled by its engines and travels along its parabolic arc. At a certain point the engines turn off, this flameout is called brenschluss. At brenschluss the rocket’s ascendancy is checked by gravity, and before it begins to fall to its target on earth, it hesitates for just a moment. After this moment gravity and momentum alone, not a rocket engine, define the inexorable trajectory of descent to its inevitable, calamitous end. (READ MORE.)

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky launches his new graphic design project, “The Book of Ice” at Eyebeam. The “Book of Ice” (Mark Batty Publisher) consists of multiple engagements with the theme of ice as presented by posters, stickers, music compositions, and an introduction by best selling author Brian Greene, whose ground-breaking book “The Elegant Universe” sets the tone for some of the issues in Miller’s new book.
For the event at Eyebeam, Miller will team up with Bill McKibben, acclaimed writer and founder of 350.org, along with Green Patriot Poster project curator Edward Morris, Small Planet Institute’s Anna Lappé, and several leading theoreticians of graphic design. Miller will also present music interpretations of some of the sonic data as compositions derived from the book and his explorations in Antarctica with a live string quartet, The Telos Ensemble, playing his compositions. At the end of the evening, there will be a book signing, and open social event themed on Antarctica, including a selection of remixes produced by Paul commissioned by the German public radio.

Ritual A Group Exhibition by HONEYCOMB
Brooklyn, NY, July 2011, HONEYCOMB and Causey Contemporary proudly present Ritual, a group exhibition featuring original artwork produced by over twenty of the freshest urban, newbrow, young contemporary artists hailing from seven countries. The public is invited to the artists’ reception on July 12th from 6 – 9 p.m Ritualistic behavior is one of the few things that have universally permeated all human sociological development. It has helped form civilizations, spawned entire belief systems, and through the ages has continuously influenced human conduct while simultaneously shaping the world as we know it. While the actual processes may vary, the incorporation of ritual into society is something that transcends nationality, geographic location and linear timeline. Cultures of both the past and present have used symbolic, traditional or religious rituals for any number of reasons including divination, personal pleasure, the achievement of spiritual or emotional needs, the formation of social bonds, expressions of respect and devotion, the advancement of social status, acceptance or for educational purposes. Although there are great differences among the countless rituals in existence, it is evident that regardless of intent or appearance, ritualistic behavior is undeniably intertwined with both our past and our future, and something that unites us all.

Boredom inspires creation. In Othelo Gervacio’s case, Postboredom is art garnered from his lingering disenfranchised youth. Gervacio has held onto the adolescent manifestation of making art and music because “you hate what is happening around you.” He states, “Are the only punks left now ‘Fashion punks’? No thanks, I’d rather I’d sit at home, listen to sludgy metal and paint something dark.” Othelo Gervacio is a new face in the downtown New York art scene. After four years under the wing of tattoo/fine artist Scott Campbell, and prior schooling in the arts, Gervacio has channeled his experiences to create his own definitive style. With the use of dark imagery and gothic lettering forms,
his art reflects an influence from the grittier side of tattoo culture, metal music, and lingering teenage angst.

I combine this with audio footage of a very special moment in Dylan’s carrier. Somebody called him “Judas” in a show in Manchester, England in 1966. You can watch that here:

Exhibition preview – Detroit-based visual artist Bethany Shorb’s “Supplemental Restraint System” is born from classic American and vintage European sports car parts harvested from wrecked vehicles. Her work is tightly wrapped in an outer skin made exclusively from previously deployed airbags, beaded and sutured back together forming another protective barrier in an imagined automotive crash narrative, then further fetishized in glass scientific vitrines. Also included in the show are neon and automotive emblem text assemblages as obsessive tropes on car-culture.

Mixed Greens is pleased to present the site-specific window project The Other Side of Ground by Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus, the artist duo known as LoVid. Their dynamic, colorful pieces are a masterful mix of the low- and high-tech.
Known for their innovative performances, live video installations, tactile objects, patchworks, sculptures, and installations, LoVid encourages the viewer to reexamine his/her relationship to the digital world. By mixing analog and digital philosophies, processes, and techniques, LoVid’s pieces come to life. In one piece, for instance, it was necessary for viewers to touch points on a monolithic sculpture in order for a video to activate. Human touch became the subject of a digital output. MORE »

A white person-sized box with a light blue banner, replicating the Facebook aesthetic, is built to confessional proportions, so that participants can step in, and speak with honesty and confidentiality to the performance artist. The performance artist offers witnessing, listening, infinite patience and guidance, as she and the participant meet in the space between the communal intimacy of the old-school confessional and the flirtatious anonymity of the Facebook application. Radio Happy Hour, a live variety show featuring a made-for-radio murder mystery sitcom, is kicking off the summer season with their first ever live taping at City Winery. The episode will feature two musical guests with both Sun Airway and rising indie-darlings Hank & Cupcakes. There will be murder. There will be music. And everyone will go home regretting something they’ve done. These bands, and another guest yet to be announced, will join Radio Happy Hour host Sam Osterhout, RHH regulars Robin Reed and Matt Skibiak, as well as RHH’s own Jim Ed Poole, Rich Bologna.
With the start of a new season it’s a perfect time to catch up on (or discover) past episodes of Radio Happy Hour through their podcast, such as the most recent episode, “The Tax Murderer,” featuring musical guest Franz Nicolay and comedian Arden Myrin. Or maybe it’s a good time to realize that you should never miss a show because you never know what’s going to happen. Cloud Cult could show up as a surprise guest in the middle of an episode featuring Norah Jones and comedian Gabe Liedman. Or 2009 Air Guitar World Champion William Ocean might leap on stage in the middle of a performance by The Postelles to wail on his air guitar. You just never know. Where the girls are so pretty
Teetering in high heels
For pints in O’neills
Tapping on their mobile phone
On streets where once walked Molly Malone.

Impractical and expensive shoes
Not designed for walking very far
