In the sea, deep, in the sea, there is a submarine hotel. Men go there, women too, to water down the world and float free. The submarine hotel is a one way trip, and the passengers are always the same. This week we’re offering you the once in a lifetime opportunity to sonically explore the interior of this metallic getaway with sounds ranging the gurgle of tasty Bier from Bernd Klug and Bernhard Hammer to a lullaby at sea with CATFOX, to the expirmental fusion of Mostly Other People Do the Killing, and the playlist inspiring track from Taren McCallen-Moore, The Submarine Hotel, plus many more.

Holi is the Hindu festival of colors. It celebrates the coming of spring, fruitful harvests, unity, joy, and a tale from the Bhagavad Gita. In addition to the throwing of colored powder (Holi Gulal) it is traditional to light bonfires in celebration of the miraculous escape that young devotee of the god Vishnu. A demon tried to throw him into a fire, but he escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable devotion. In most areas, Holi lasts about two days. One of Holi’s biggest customs is the loosening strictness of social structures, which normally include age, sex, status, and caste. Holi closes the wide gaps between social classes and brings Hindus together. Together, the rich and poor, women and men, enjoy each other’s presence on this joyous day. Additionally, Holi lowers the strictness of social norms. No one expects the decorum of normal life; as a result, the atmosphere is filled with excitement and joy.
HAZMAT MODINE draws from the rich soil of American music of the 20′s and 30′s through to the 50′s and early 60′s, blending elements of early Blues, Hokum Jugband, Swing, Klezmer, New Orleans R & B, and Jamaican Rocksteady. The band is fronted by two harmonicas which use call and response, harmony, melody, and syncopated interweaving rhythms. The band includes tuba, guitar, and percussion, claviola and Hawaiian steel guitar. The band’s sound reflects musical influences ranging from Avant-garde Jazz to Rockabilly and Western Swing to Middle-Eastern, African, and Hawaiian musical styles.

It suddenly smells like back to school. Harriet can’t identify the source triggering the memory, but that’s the image conjured up when she finally gets around to opening the morning paper a little after lunch.
She takes a deep breath thinking maybe it smells like the book bag she had in grade school. The kind they don’t make anymore. Of course, there are a lot of things they don’t make anymore. That notion sets her to thinking momentarily who the great “they”, who’ve controlled and defined her life, might actually be.
“You need to be specific,” was the one thing she tried to instill in her ninth grade English classes. “Site an example,” she’d repeat with every class as she critiqued the load of papers she assigned and then returned with grades running the gamut from D to A. Fs and A+s being rare.
Sad so few students stood out in her thirty year tenure, eventually fading into the group comprising the “they:” The only thing distinguishing one group from another, the current clothing trend. Most of the students she remembered were from her early years on the job. Early years when she imagined she could make a difference.

They say he’s gone completely off the rails
or what’s the new favorite?
Right: out where the buses don’t run.
It was pride once — back in his twenties
chasing girls, always ready to pounce — the ink of him
indelible in each and then on to another,
showing off, wasting his promise on the glimmer
of aimless days on the Lower East Side.
Gone off completely, not even rhyming anymore, not even
English really, no syntax, just a mushy concentrate to push
the drawer closed over along with all the old
black & whites, there to ripen and grow that sepia
patina like a skin of fuzzy mold.
They say too he’s out West somewhere, who cares where,
maybe the Cabinet Mountains or the Sound, switched to bourbon
maybe, ego receding, cataracts on the memories
of the good old days like moss on a pond, the rowboat rotting
by the dock, but still that same smile, that hint
of the boyhood back when spray paint stuck to train cars,
those old screeching IRT red birds, and the sun shone on the brick
buildings up by Columbia. They say he’s gone completely off
but maybe he’s happy.

Honesty Box @ THE END.
Date(s): 18 Jun 2011
Time: 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Where: The End, Brooklyn
Event Details: “Honesty Box” is a live amalgam of the old Facebook app “Honesty Box”and the Catholic confessional. A white person-sized box with a light blue banner, replicating the Facebook aesthetic, is built to confessional proportions, so that participants can step in, and speak with honesty and confidentiality to the performance artist. The performance artist offers witnessing, listening, infinite patience and guidance, as she and the participant meet in the space between the communal intimacy of the old-school confessional and the flirtatious anonymity of the Facebook application. Most of us crave a safe and honest conference, and have lost faith in both religious models and cheap apps. What does it mean to unburden and receive comfort? Find out!

Radio Happy Hour, a live variety show featuring a made-for-radio murder mystery sitcom, is kicking off the summer season with their first ever live taping at City Winery. The episode will feature two musical guests with both Sun Airway and rising indie-darlings Hank & Cupcakes. There will be murder. There will be music. And everyone will go home regretting something they’ve done. These bands, and another guest yet to be announced, will join Radio Happy Hour host Sam Osterhout, RHH regulars Robin Reed and Matt Skibiak, as well as RHH’s own Jim Ed Poole, Rich Bologna.
With the start of a new season it’s a perfect time to catch up on (or discover) past episodes of Radio Happy Hour through their podcast, such as the most recent episode, “The Tax Murderer,” featuring musical guest Franz Nicolay and comedian Arden Myrin. Or maybe it’s a good time to realize that you should never miss a show because you never know what’s going to happen. Cloud Cult could show up as a surprise guest in the middle of an episode featuring Norah Jones and comedian Gabe Liedman. Or 2009 Air Guitar World Champion William Ocean might leap on stage in the middle of a performance by The Postelles to wail on his air guitar. You just never know. And that is why you should never miss a live taping of Radio Happy Hour. (READ MORE.)

The Literary Debutante Ball: April 29, 2011
A Celebration of Emerging Writers
|When:||Friday, April 29, 2011, 7pm – 11pm|
|Where:||The Invisible Dog Art Center
51 Bergen St. (between Smith St. & Court St.)
Brooklyn, NY 11201
The Literary Debutante Ball is a benefit that celebrates One Story magazine, the publication of our debutantes, and honors one writer who has been an exceptional mentor to others. The ball will feature specialty cocktails, music, dancing, and a silent art auction.
The highlight of the benefit will be the formal “presentation” of One Story authors who have published their debut books in the past year:
Robin Black, If I Loved You I Would Tell You This (Random House)
Susanna Daniel, Stiltsville (HarperCollins)
Seth Fried, The Great Frustration (Soft Skull Press)
Jerry Gabriel, Drowned Boy (Sarabande Books)
Jim Hanas, Why They Cried (ECW Press)
Each writer will be escorted by an established author and/or editor who has been a mentor to them. This year, One Story will also honor the novelist and memoirist Dani Shapiro, for her years of extraordinary support of emerging writers.
All proceeds will benefit One Story, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and aid it in its mission to support the art form of the short story and the authors who write them. Tickets for the ball start at $50 each. Higher level individual, corporate, and in-kind sponsorships are available and most welcome. For complete details and benefits of donating to One Story, contact Maribeth Batcha at firstname.lastname@example.org. No one under 21 years old will be admitted.
