Episode 04 : The automata and automatic music – tucked away, in a quiet and pleasant suburb of New Jersey, there exists one of the most fascinating collections of artistic engineering ever collected. the collection belonged to Murtogh Guinness, of the Guinness Brewing Company. Its contents are, what i can only describe as the early days of robotics, engineered for our ancestor’s entertainment. dolls that perform incredible tasks, full orchestras in the middle of your parlor, and my favorite of course, a banjo that plays itself. the collection is maintained and managed by Jere Ryder who began his interest at a very early age. He is now entrusted to the collection at the Morris Museum located in Morristown, New Jersey. Keep your eyes on the brooklyn observatory as they occasionally take a field trip out. The museum is located at 6 Normandy Heights road Morristown, NJ and well worth the trip if you are nearby – Jere is not only very knowledgeable on the subject but also a fantastic tour guide… thanks a ton, Mr. Ryder, we’ll see you soon no doubt!

B.C. EDWARDS lives in Brooklyn. He is the recipient of the 2011 Hudson Prize put out by Black Lawrence Press which will be publishing his collection of short fiction, The Aversive Clause in 2012 and his collection of poetry From the Standard Cyclopedia of Recipes in 2013. His work can be found in Red Line Blues, The Sink Review, Food-i-Corp, Hobart and others. His short story “Illfit” is being adapted into a piece by the Royal Ballet of Flanders. BEN FAMA is the author of the chapbook Aquarius Rising (UDP 2009) and NEW WAVES (Minutes Books). He is the founding editor of Supermachine Poetry Journal. His work has been featured in GlitterPony, notnostrums, LIT, Poor Claudia, and on the Best American Poetry Blog, among others. He has contributed tips to gawker, words to urban dictionary, and has an ongoing correspondence with Lady Gaga. ELY SHIPLEY’s first book, Boy with Flowers, won the 2007 Barrow Street Press book prize judged by Carl Phillips, the 2009 Thom Gunn Award, and was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. His writing appears in the Western Humanities Review, Prairie Schooner, Diagram, Gulf Coast, and elsewhere. He holds a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Utah and currently teaches at Baruch College, CUNY. Hosted by Angelo Nikolopoulos $7 cover includes a house drink.

In the installation, Living Room, artist and filmmaker Maya Zack uses large-scale computer-generated 3D images accompanied by sound to evoke a Jewish family’s apartment from 1930s Berlin. While listening to the stories and memories of Manfred Nomburg, visitors can experience the apartment visually. 3D glasses enhance the oversized images reimagining rooms in the apartment and give them immediacy and depth.
Everybody Loves the Monster!

In 1818, when Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus was published for the first time, Mary Shelley could not have imagined the monster she was unleashing on the world. The creature in Shelley’s novel is remarkably sympathetic and an eloquent speaker, capable of measured, intelligent, and articulate argument. But based on Boris Karloff’s 1931 film performance and confirmed by countless other films, comics, and illustrations, the general perception today is that Frankenstein’s creature is a “monster” who grunts or speaks—if he talks at all—in disjointed monosyllables.
Why has popular culture largely denied the creature his reasonable voice? This symposium brings together four scholars and the curator and bibliographer of The New York Public Library’s Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection to reflect on graphic and film representations of the “monster” from the past two centuries. The first half of the day will feature presentations on key visual adaptations of the creature, while the latter half will engage questions about what these appearances mean for understanding him as a political and historical subject.

Stripping fast food architecture and smart phone technology of it’s branding and context, Washko and Dimitrova present what remains – hollow monuments to consumer culture.

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky launches his new graphic design project, “The Book of Ice” at Eyebeam. The “Book of Ice” (Mark Batty Publisher) consists of multiple engagements with the theme of ice as presented by posters, stickers, music compositions, and an introduction by best selling author Brian Greene, whose ground-breaking book “The Elegant Universe” sets the tone for some of the issues in Miller’s new book.
For the event at Eyebeam, Miller will team up with Bill McKibben, acclaimed writer and founder of 350.org, along with Green Patriot Poster project curator Edward Morris, Small Planet Institute’s Anna Lappé, and several leading theoreticians of graphic design. Miller will also present music interpretations of some of the sonic data as compositions derived from the book and his explorations in Antarctica with a live string quartet, The Telos Ensemble, playing his compositions. At the end of the evening, there will be a book signing, and open social event themed on Antarctica, including a selection of remixes produced by Paul commissioned by the German public radio.

Ritual A Group Exhibition by HONEYCOMB
Brooklyn, NY, July 2011, HONEYCOMB and Causey Contemporary proudly present Ritual, a group exhibition featuring original artwork produced by over twenty of the freshest urban, newbrow, young contemporary artists hailing from seven countries. The public is invited to the artists’ reception on July 12th from 6 – 9 p.m Ritualistic behavior is one of the few things that have universally permeated all human sociological development. It has helped form civilizations, spawned entire belief systems, and through the ages has continuously influenced human conduct while simultaneously shaping the world as we know it. While the actual processes may vary, the incorporation of ritual into society is something that transcends nationality, geographic location and linear timeline. Cultures of both the past and present have used symbolic, traditional or religious rituals for any number of reasons including divination, personal pleasure, the achievement of spiritual or emotional needs, the formation of social bonds, expressions of respect and devotion, the advancement of social status, acceptance or for educational purposes. Although there are great differences among the countless rituals in existence, it is evident that regardless of intent or appearance, ritualistic behavior is undeniably intertwined with both our past and our future, and something that unites us all.

Boredom inspires creation. In Othelo Gervacio’s case, Postboredom is art garnered from his lingering disenfranchised youth. Gervacio has held onto the adolescent manifestation of making art and music because “you hate what is happening around you.” He states, “Are the only punks left now ‘Fashion punks’? No thanks, I’d rather I’d sit at home, listen to sludgy metal and paint something dark.” Othelo Gervacio is a new face in the downtown New York art scene. After four years under the wing of tattoo/fine artist Scott Campbell, and prior schooling in the arts, Gervacio has channeled his experiences to create his own definitive style. With the use of dark imagery and gothic lettering forms,
his art reflects an influence from the grittier side of tattoo culture, metal music, and lingering teenage angst.

The installation visually is based on a particular sort of stage light that I only know from single person performances in the the 60s and 70s and that for me is also very metaphorical. I combine this with audio footage of a very special moment in Dylan’s carrier. Somebody called him “Judas” in a show in Manchester, England in 1966. You can watch that here:

I’m replaceing his real answer to the Judas cry with words I’ll rearrange from footage of the old man Dylan’s voice. Exhibition preview – Detroit-based visual artist Bethany Shorb’s “Supplemental Restraint System” is born from classic American and vintage European sports car parts harvested from wrecked vehicles. Her work is tightly wrapped in an outer skin made exclusively from previously deployed airbags, beaded and sutured back together forming another protective barrier in an imagined automotive crash narrative, then further fetishized in glass scientific vitrines. Also included in the show are neon and automotive emblem text assemblages as obsessive tropes on car-culture.

Mixed Greens is pleased to present the site-specific window project The Other Side of Ground by Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus, the artist duo known as LoVid. Their dynamic, colorful pieces are a masterful mix of the low- and high-tech.
Known for their innovative performances, live video installations, tactile objects, patchworks, sculptures, and installations, LoVid encourages the viewer to reexamine his/her relationship to the digital world. By mixing analog and digital philosophies, processes, and techniques, LoVid’s pieces come to life. In one piece, for instance, it was necessary for viewers to touch points on a monolithic sculpture in order for a video to activate. Human touch became the subject of a digital output. MORE »

Khaïra Arby (pronounced: Hī-ra Arbē), the Nightingale of the North, born in the village of Abaradjou in the Sahara Desert north of Timbuktu. Khaira’s parents came from different ethnic backgrounds, mother Songhai and father Berber. You can hear these cultures in her music; she sings in several languages. The instrumentation and rhythms are just as varied with electric guitar and bass, calabash, ngoni, traditional violin, and percussion creating a complex mixture of sound and structure. Some people compare the effect to the rhythms of the camel caravans crossing the Sahara.
The Brooklyn-based duo The Mast creates a propulsive and expansive sound featuring Haale’s layered, undulating vocals and hypnotic electric guitar riffs dancing with Matt Kilmer’s polyrhythmic drumming.

Since the 1990s, the Ladybug Transistor has created formalist pop-rock albums with a dreamy, articulate sound that spans decades and genres. Anchored by Gary Olson’s organizing vision and restrained baritone, their music boasts intricate arrangements and soaring melodies that are at once modern and timeless.
This band’s narrative holds a rich history of heartfelt collaboration, tireless devotion, quiet and outspoken romance, new arrivals, unexpected departures, achy break-ups, and unspeakable loss. They have become agile at adjustment.
In 2007, the untimely passing of their beloved drummer San Fadyl left members Olson, Kyle Forester, and Julia Rydholm at an unimaginable loss, struggling with a prevailing sense of “What now?” At a time where moving forward felt possibly impossible, the band quietly gathered new recruits (Mark Dzula, Eric Farber, Michael O’Neill) and embarked on writing a new album with the memory of San squarely in mind.
The resulting effort is their forthcoming release Clutching Stems-a lush collection of potent refrains and brought-to-one’s-knees ballads. Set to an invigorated soundtrack of wave-pop arrangements, the songs detail stories of humbling heartbreak, profound longing, undoing distress, nagging regret, and coming-of-age awakenings. Olson’s lyrics express an overarching search to find one’s voice in the face of moments that knock the wind and words right out of a person.
This new line-up has found a distinct voice that honors diverse influences and the band’s own precedent sound. Clutching Stems assuredly underlines that while love can tear things apart, it can also capably mend them back together once again.

Young Blood presents work by twelve Master of Fine Arts candidates from Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, print, photography, and mixed-media selections. Works range from object to experience-based, conceptually to formally driven. The art deals with issues of memory, text, personal mythology, narrative, material—its essence and connotations, representations of anxiety and the inner psyche, industry and landscape, and pornography and voyeurism in the internet age, among others. Featured works are both deeply personal and at the same time reflect larger cultural phenomena. Young Blood introduces an emerging generation of makers concerned with object, craft, theory, and their speculation on the role of medium and its implications in contemporary art. Gorgeous old-world cabaret collides with modernity in this unique Brooklyn-based ensemble. Wringing elements of Eastern European folksong, post-war classical, and experimental rock into an otherworldly soundscape, Barbez shifts elegantly between haunting, meditative moments and explosive outbreaks. The group will be presenting several new pieces from a forthcoming recording inspired by ancient Roman-Jewish melodies, as well as new music for a separate album concerning the wars in the Middle East since 9/11. The triumphant return of the Diva with a Difference. Rachelle returns to Barbès after a year. Dubbed a”Master of Surprise” by Entertainment Weekly, Rachelle writes and performs darkly optimistic story-songs and accompanies herself on a variety of instruments including accordion, piano, claviola, guitar and plastic bells, “…leaving nothing behind but sweet wreckage.” (The New Yorker). Rachelle has released four CDs as well as a single “My House of Peace”, which was produced by Jack White and released on vinyl by Third Man Records. Rachelle also composed the music for Taylor Mac’s epic 5-hour long theater piece “The Lily’s Revenge” which premiered at Here Arts Center October ’09.

Axis Company’s episodic play Hospital, about the interior life of a person in a terminal coma, is something of a signature for the company, which has produced a new installment of the drama nearly every year since 1997. Conceived, written and directed by Randy Sharp the show is a summer downtown phenomenon beloved for its balance of horror, humor, and weirdness. The company will present the 11th production in the series July 8 – August 20.
While most audience members return to see multiple, if not all four, parts of the summer’s production, each episode is a self-contained short play that can be seen in isolation. The brief premise film that begins each year’s production—depicting the event that brought on the coma—is shown at the beginning of each performance.

Edith Gonzalez presents two faces of the utopian mind of the 19th century: Ocean Grove, which remains to this day a “religious resort”, while Asbury Park, a secular pleasure zone, has faced more worldly ups and downs. Since their respective founding side by side on the NJ coast, these two communities have been engaged in a dynamic dialogue of morality.
Edith Gonzalez is an historical anthropologist specializing in nineteenth-century systems of power, and a native New Yorker with a deep and abiding love for New Jersey.

The plastic babies I depict are known as ‘King Cake Babies.’ They are placed inside King Cakes, a cinnamon filled pastry-like cake eaten during Mardi Gras season.
