Three Colorists: curated by Michael Walls — Eozen Agopian, Alan Kleiman, Diane Mayo
Where: Lesley Heller Workspace
When: June 6 – July 6, 2012, Opening Reception: Wednesday, June 6, 6-8pm
Three Colorists, curated by Michael Walls, highlights the work of three artists who have several things in common: they began their professional life as painters; the oeuvre of each importantly involves the role of color; and the work of each is not only labor intensive, but also revealing of a hard-won mastery of the chosen craft.
LABAPALOOZA! MINI FESTIVAL OF NEW PUPPET THEATER FROM THE LAB
Where: St. Ann’s Warehouse
When: MAY 31-JUNE 3
It’s the last show before we move to our new location at 29 Jay Street! What better way to say goodbye to 38 Water Street than with our 14th annual Labapalooza Festival? This year’s line-up of works-in-progress ranges from the traditional to the irreverent, from the ground breaking to the nostalgic, and from delightful to downright punk-rock.
Masterpiece Theater Curated by: Geoffrey Young
Where: Morgan Lehman
When: May 31 – June 30
If theatrical is the question, masterpiece is the answer. Modesty in art is over-rated, as anyone with a Schnabel complex knows, so be prepared for the challenge of ascertaining the significance of what these artists have been cooking up over the past four months. Yes, each can draw, paint, and employ color to bold effect, but that’s of secondary importance (the least we can expect of an artist). What drives these artists is Imagination. Another word for imagination is risk, another word for risk is danger, another word for danger is aesthetics. And aesthetics, as we know, is for the birds. But these artists aint tweeting.
Thurston Moore + Bill Nace + Joe McPhee
When: May 31, 8pm
Three pillars of the noise and avant-jazz scene collide : Thurston Moore, singer/songwriter/guitarist for Sonic Youth, teams up with free-noise guitarist Bill Nace and avant-jazz saxophonist Joe McPhee for an evening of mind bending cacophony.

Ben Marcus & Ryan Britt
Our ongoing Blogger/Author Pairings series features conversations between authors and bloggers who share territories, passions, and preoccupations. New York City-based author Ben Marcus discusses his new novel, The Flame Alphabet, with blogger Ryan Britt, a teacher at The Gotham Writers’ Workshop and staff writer for the popular science fiction and fantasy blog, Tor.com and Tor’s series “Genre in the Mainstream.” In The Flame Alphabet, the most maniacally gifted writer of our generation delivers a work of heartbreak and horror, a novel about how far we will go, and the sorrows we will endure, in order to protect our families. Both morally engaged and wickedly entertaining, a gripping page-turner as strange as it is moving, this intellectual horror story ensures Ben Marcus’s position in the first rank of American novelists. The event is hosted by series curator Ron Hogan, creator of the seminal literary blog Beatrice.com.
ECSTATIC MUSIC FEST: DAN DEACON WITH NOW ENSEMBLE & THE CALDER QUARTET
Dan Deacon (pictured) returns to the Ecstatic Music Festival after last year’s sold-out show, this time writing a series of new works for acclaimed chamber groups NOW Ensemble (“a deft young group gaining attention,” New Yorker) and the Calder Quartet (“outstanding,” New York Times), both for the individual ensembles and for the two together in a mini-chamber orchestra.

More than ever we appreciate the unique, unusual, weird in life and we’re willing to share it. The 22 Magazine brings together folks worldwide.
Different viewpoints equals fun art.
New York can be an intimidating place but it can also be a home. To keep these unique, incredible artists, writers and musicians from New York and otherwise around, we need your help.
Please consider donating, even something very small. We are still struggling to meet our goal and we know there are folks out there reading! We’re not asking for much. A few dollars goes a long way. We’ve added a $5 and a $250 option to the donation and you’ll note a very awesome tote bag or t-shirt is available at the $250 level from contributor and comic artist, John Jennison.
We know, it seems like a-lot but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many amazing projects we’d like to really give a jumpstart to and your’s could very likely be one of them.
Thanks for listening again and please consider giving today.

Arts For Art, Inc. presents the 16th annual Vision Festival, New York City’s premier multidisciplinary celebration of innovative jazz music, dance, poetry, and art, held for its third year at the Abrons. Critics have described it as “arguably the most important free-jazz fest in the U.S.” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader), and stated that “avant-garde jazz culture has no better colloquy in this country than the Vision Festival” (Nate Chinen, The New York Times).
Each year, the Vision Festival honors the achievements of one living artist who has greatly influenced the world around them and paved the way for other innovators to move forward. On Wednesday, June 8, Arts For Art and The Vision Festival will celebrate a Lifetime of Achievement by Peter Brotzmann. This great improviser was one of the first practitioners of the Free Jazz movement in Europe. Brotzmann has programmed his own evening in such a way that it would reflect his ongoing pursuit of musical innovation. This 70-year-old artist is not interested in looking back — only in looking forward and being as creative as possible in the present.

Love Is Blind, a show that’s half cabaret and half live dating game, seeks singles to play the game. They have the cabaret part down, but the show needs you on-stage answering outrageous questions, as the audience witnesses the spectacle.
Hosted by Sarah Sims Erwin (aka: DJ Sims, and formerly with The Fun Club), Love Is Blind features more than the dating game. It’s got the lovable song stylings of Finsbury Park and Lady Adrienne; the twisted dance theater group Movementpants Dance; and a little something balloon-y by the host. And after the show, dance to Love Is Blind’s resident DJ, Blind Eye Sees All. Proper footwear = rug cutting bliss.
$5 admission gets you a Love Lottery ticket which gives you a chance to play (or give your ticket to a friend to better their chance to win). Contestants will be picked live at the event.
Spread the word. Spread the love.
