The 22 V 2/II SIGN & SYMBOL ONLINE NOW!

It is with no small amount of honor that we present the contributors of Vol 2/II: Sign & Symbol. These works are potent and it is with great awe, wonder, shock, respect, and pride that we raise The 22′s banner to pay tribute.

The contributors in Volume 2/II display an uncanny ability to manipulate context. Artists, writers, and musicians often stand at the forefront of cultural change, reflecting visions and revisions of our shared history. The contributors in this volume prove that icons come in many shapes, sizes, and media. At The 22, it is not our job to decide which is more correct, but instead to showcase a spectrum of interpretations. From the brash innuendos of Alexander Barton, the subtle humor of Captain Panda Pants, the visceral statements of Kikuko Tanaka, the humorous apocalypses of Marcus Kenny, the bold words of Nancy Flynn, the pressing urgency of Robert Kulesz, the enduring marks of David Bailin, the mementos and monuments of Kyle Coffin and Joseph Leroux, the clockwork perfection of Emily Ginsburg, the quiet intensity of Edwin Rostron, Mario Kolaric and Thera Webb, the humanity of Jonathan Wood Vincent, the minimalist seduction of James Gallagher, the perfected symbols and sounds of Yuko Otomo and Steve Dalachinksy, the strange surrealities of Derek Larson, the gut-wrecking prose of Ventral is Golden and Damien Knightley, the unabashed beauty of Robert Lucy, to the professed arbitrariness of Colin Oulighan, this volume covers the gamut of symbology and speaks to the underlying notion that we all are highly aware of our public and personal icons-whatever they may be.

Thank you to each and every person who made this volume possible including our generous fundraiser contributors.

~Cat Gilbert, Editor and Publisher

THE 22 FUNDRAISER: VOL 2/II, SIGN AND SYMBOL.

THE 22 MAGAZINE: VOL 2/II, SIGN & SYMBOL: THE FUNDRAISER.

We know. You wait for this moment all year. Perhaps with bated breath. Likely with tingling anticipation. Well, tingle no longer my friends. THE 22 FUNDRAISER has officially begun.

There are some amazing (and expensive) things coming up for The 22, including the rather mad attempt at publishing THE 22 REVIEW, our first print incarnation of The 22 Magazine: Vol I and II. Encompassing a year’s work of work, this volume is testament to the first year of the 22 and the contributor’s (both in the magazine and on the web) that have made it possible.

So HOW do you get a copy? Well, one way to ensure you do it to GIVE US MONEY. There are a plethora of things we’ll reward you with for donating (besides our undying devotion) and you’ll also help stroke our fundraising egos so in the future we can do bigger and better things.

We truly thank you for whatever you can give.

DONATE NOW! OUR THANKS FOREVER.

The 22 Magazine: Volume 2/II SIGN & SYMBOL coming December 22nd.

Things are about to get fun. We’ve finally finalized our list for Volume 2/11! We’ll be wrapping up our showcase of Volume One contributors as the new models roll off the line for Vol 2/II: Sign and Symbol. I love this part, two ships creaking and swaying, as they pass each other in the night, and I am particularly excited about the fresh perspective in our upcoming volume. Our mission remains a showcase of contributors and luckily this volume has a real kick to it. The combination of emerging and established talent is gorgeous and I can’t thank anyone or everyone enough for sending work in or for helping us develop the blog. For me, this project makes it feel like Christmas every day of the year. As always it is your support and talent that makes it worthwhile.

Here’s what you can look forward to!

September-December 2011 (Wrap of contributor showcase for Vol 1.)

November 1st, 2011 (CONTRIBUTOR REVEAL BEGINS ONLINE)

Early 2012 (Really exciting announcement about the future course of the 22!)

Parties and events come as they may, often without warning, so we’ll keep you updated in the next couple of months on your chance to celebrate with these amazing folks.

MoMA Premiere: Through the Weeping Glass: An Evening with the Quay Brothers

September 24, 2011

As part of a limited three-city tour that includes premieres in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, MoMA presents the Quay Brothers’Through the Weeping Glass: On the Consolations of Life Everlasting (Limbos & Afterbreezes in the Mütter Museum), a new work by the American-born, British-based independent filmmakers. In the tradition of their prior museum documentaries—The Phantom Museum (2003), on London’s Sir Henry Wellcome Collection, and Inventorium of Traces (2009), on Poland’s Lancut Castle—the Quays return to the city where they began their education as graphic designers to explore the medical collections of the Mütter Museum, part of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Examining obscure archives, antique volumes, and artifacts, Through the Weeping Glass investigates marvels of pathology and anatomical oddities, finding poetry in the ill-fated, true-life stories of the “ossified man” Harry Eastlack and famed Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker. The documentary Behind the Scenes with the Quay Brothers, shot during production ofThrough the Weeping Glass, also premieres. Directors Stephen and Timothy Quay will be present to discuss the film with writer David Spolum and moderator Barbara London.

THE 22 MAGAZINE V II: SIGN AND SYMBOL

“Wild, dark times are rumbling toward us, and the prophet who wishes to write a new apocalypse will have to invent entirely new beasts, and beasts so terrible that the ancient animal symbols of Saint John will seem like cooing doves and cupids in comparison.”

~Heinreich Heine

DEADLINE: September 1st

Despite our previous intent, Volume II has slowly progressed into a theme that we could not ignore. For Vol II we ask our contributors to dig deep into their psyche and take hold of those great occurrences that trigger action, reaction or deep awe. Signs and symbols are often on the peripheral but when brought to light, when explored and examined they can elicit great change both on small and large scales. What makes up your triggers? What cues cause your reaction? What represents you or others? How do we manipulate these tools? And in the end, what do they all really mean?

TO SUBMIT for the magazine, the blog or as a writer for the 22 send your work by link (or a sample of) to the22magazine@gmail.com.

Leo Koenig Inc. is pleased to announce the fifth solo exhibition of new paintings by Torben Giehler. Giehler is known for his geometric abstractions, influenced by futuristic universes, and finished with mathematical precision. In a departure from the vibrant color palette and electrified vortex of his previous paintings, these new works extend a zen-like calm, alchemically fusing the synapses of the human brain to the grids and networks of digitized technology. Boring Stories
A handmade book-making workshop
Sunday, May 1st, 2011, 5-8pm
at A.I.R. Gallery
FREE - RSVP is required!

2010-11 A.I.R. Fellow Jiyoon Koo in collaboration with professional book-binder Susan Mills A.I.R. Gallery and 2010-11 A.I.R. Fellow Jiyoon Koo invite the public to Boring Stories, an workshop and literary event on Sunday, May 1, 2011 from 5-8pm. The event will be limited to 15 people and a donation of $10 is requested to cover the cost of materials. Due to the limited number of participants, advance registration is recommended. Please RSVP to info@airgallery.org to participate and make your donation.
Jiyoon has invited a professional book-binder, Susan Mills, to teach basic book binding. Each participant will be asked to bring to the workshop four sentences that describe special or disappointing events from childhood memories. These will be the basis for a narrative. In its final form, however, each book will be a “blank” book because the conclusion or climax will be missing and the point of the story will be absent, thus creating a void. Attendees will bind their own books, which they will take home with them. In addition, all stories will be bound into a single volume, a copy of which will be given to each participant; one copy will be left in the gallery space.
For a full press release please click HERE.
For more information about Susan Mills, please click HERE.
*The artist will email individually the 15 people who RSVP for the event to give more information about the workshop.

THE 22 VOL: 1 ONLINE NOW!

Well folks, it’s finally here. The first issue of The 22 in all it’s beautiful, gritty, hard wonness and I for one am glad to see it foisted upon the world. For the moment it is available to view on ISSUU and this evening I’ll have everything embedded so the tentacles of publication stretch far and wide. There are some amazing artists in here, and their words and pictures are now all yours. Over the next couple of months I’ll be shining a spotlight on each of these artists and telling you the story of why the were chosen to be one of the 22.(Look for a special post tomorrow morning as well, introducing you to the 22.)

Lots of very cool things coming up in the following months as well, including video interviews and some really terrific events involving the contributors.

Thanks again to all the folks that made this possible. We couldn’t have done it without you…and you….and definitely you.
