Boo-Hooray is happy to announce an exhibition of original art, publications, photography, ephemera and manuscripts related to Jacqueline De Jong’s vanguard publication The Situationist Times, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first issue. A total of six issues were published: Issue 1 in May of 1962, and the final issue in December of 1967. A seventh issue was compiled but not published. The Situationist movement produced periodicals: Internationale Situationniste (twelve issues published between 1958 and 1969) and the German Gruppe SPUR publication SPUR (six issues from August 1960 to August 1961). There were other examples: Drakabygget (Scandinavia), Heatwave (UK), Black Mask (USA), King Mob Echo (UK). Dutch artist and graphic designer Jacqueline de Jong joined the Situationist International in 1960. De Jong suggested the publication of an English language newsletter in November of 1960, to be co-edited with British Situationist Alexander Trocchi.

The 22 Magazine is pleased to present an evening of music, art, food and puppetry with Andru Bemis, Anna Gevalt, Elizabeth Laprelle and Katherine Fahey, who along with singing, will be presenting a cranky. Also known as scrolling panorama, or crank box, the cranky is an old-fashioned hand-cranked scrolling device, illustrating a story or song. They will be joined by FAHEY, puppeteer Daniel Patrick Fay, and visual artists Jimmy McBride, Megan Canning, Eileen Hoffman, Reineke Hollander and more. There will be a potluck style buffet, so feel free to bring something to contribute! The event will take place on April 26, at Vaudeville Park in Brooklyn.

MoMA Premiere: Through the Weeping Glass: An Evening with the Quay Brothers

As part of a limited three-city tour that includes premieres in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, MoMA presents the Quay Brothers’Through the Weeping Glass: On the Consolations of Life Everlasting (Limbos & Afterbreezes in the Mütter Museum), a new work by the American-born, British-based independent filmmakers. In the tradition of their prior museum documentaries—The Phantom Museum (2003), on London’s Sir Henry Wellcome Collection, and Inventorium of Traces (2009), on Poland’s Lancut Castle—the Quays return to the city where they began their education as graphic designers to explore the medical collections of the Mütter Museum, part of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Examining obscure archives, antique volumes, and artifacts, Through the Weeping Glass investigates marvels of pathology and anatomical oddities, finding poetry in the ill-fated, true-life stories of the “ossified man” Harry Eastlack and famed Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker. The documentary Behind the Scenes with the Quay Brothers, shot during production ofThrough the Weeping Glass, also premieres. Directors Stephen and Timothy Quay will be present to discuss the film with writer David Spolum and moderator Barbara London.

Known for his strong and sensuous depictions of women, Brian M. Viveros is a master of contemporary iconography paying homage to the femme fatale. While he almost exclusively paints portraits, within the expressions of his women is conveyed such deep emotion and overwhelming sexuality that his work is undeniably erotic. Often without even a hint of nudity, the viewer is seduced with a mere pout and gaze from his subject’s faces.
In what will be Brian’s second showing at the gallery, the opening will feature an all new collection of original paintings, as well as special rare prints from the artist’s own collection; poster giveaway and signing; live “Smoking Army” performance; screening of Brian’s films along with his new short, and much more.

VIDEOROVER: Season II is curated by Rachel Steinberg and features artists: Fatima Al Qadiri and Lyndsy Welgos, Cecilia Bonilla, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Derek Larson, Dana Levy, Pernille With Madsen, Colin Snapp, and JULIACKS.
VIDEOROVER seeks to present a wide range of works from artists locally and internationally who are all working to expand the perceptual limitations of video. This season’s selection aims to disorient viewers by removing an essential reality context, only to redeposit them into seemingly familiar settings.
Dana Levy, Fatima Al Qadiri and Lyndsy Welgos explore the pluralism of eastern and western conventions by looking at traditions through a contemporary perspective. Cecilia Bonilla examines our relationships to the seductive nature of commercial images of women through minimal manipulation, while Juan Pablo Echeverri shows us a self-projected fantasy of mass-produced femininity. Colin Snapp acts as a ‘journalist’ of sorts, documenting moments of real-time, but relieving the viewer of imposed intentions. Pernille With Madsen dizzies and disorients us with a vision of how to imagine architectural surroundings. Derek Larson’s playful experimentations extend through other worldly humor while JULIACKS’ narrative pulls back and forth between a character’s inner psyche and external world. (READ MORE.)

Olek’s acclaimed installation “Knitting is for Pus****” has created a total sensation since it 1st opened back in September 2010. It traveled to SCOPE MIAMI, and was extended repeatedly due to pop…ular demand and endless press requests… next it will be highlighted in a traveling museum show called “40 Under 40″ opening at The SMITHSONIAN Museum in 2012!

Each Fellow will briefly present images of her work. Light refreshments will be served.
The A.I.R. Fellowship Program for Emerging and Underrepresented Women Artists was established in 1993 and has helped launch the careers of over 40 women artists since it’s inception. Each year the program offers six women artists the opportunity to have their first solo exhibit or their first solo exhibit in 10 years. A.I.R. Fellows advance their careers with a studio visit from an art professional, 18 months of professional development, and mentoring with the A.I.R. Gallery artists and staff. A.I.R. Gallery looks forward to the dynamic and diverse exhibitions of each Fellowship Artist, presenting paintings, mixed media installation, photography, and sculpture. Additionally, each Fellowship recipient will organize a public outreach program at the gallery, meeting A.I.R.’s mission to provide leadership and community to women artists. We hope you will join us for these exciting exhibitions and events!
Aimee Burg received her BFA from Pratt Institute and her MFA from Yale, where she received the George R. Bunker Award for excellence in the Sculpture department. She was also one of eight American MFA students to be chosen for the USA/MFA exhibition in Israel’s leading graduate art school, Bezalel, promoting conversation in art between cultures. This exchange has influenced her current project curating an Israeli and American artist collaboration, opening in Sunset Park in April, 2011.
Bang Geul Han was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. Han earned her MFA in Electronic Integrated Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University in Alfred, NY and BFA in Painting from the Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. Based in the US since 2003, she participated in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture,the MacDowell Colony, the Triangle Artist’s Workshop and the Artist Alliance Inc’s Lower East Side Rotating Studio Program. She works with variety of media ranging from watercolor to computer programming.
Annie Ewaskio was born in Hanover, New Hampshire and grew up amidst trees, hills, love and adventure. She received her BA from Grinnell College in 2004 and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 2006. Her paintings and drawings have been shown nationally, primarily in New York and Baltimore, where she recently had an exhibition at Metro Gallery. Her work has been published in catalogues and in Studio Visit Magazine. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Einat Imber (born 1979, Israel) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Although her practice is based in an urban environment, it is closely related to nature. In 2008, a fellowship from the Joan Mitchell Foundation allowed her to spend 4 weeks as artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. She returned to the city with a U-haul full of driftwood. Other materials for her work are sourced from hardware stores, the 99¢ store, bait and tackle shops, the fabric district or the McMaster catalogue. Her work has been included in numerous group shows in and around New York City. Most recently she presented a room full of sculptures, drawing and photography as part of the 2010 Governors Island Art Fair. She received her BFA from the Cooper Union and lessons for a lifetime from its sculpture shop.
Katherine Tzu-lan Mann received her BA from Brown University and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is the recipient of a Fulbright grant to Taiwan and the Toby Devan Lewis fellowship. She has participated as an artist in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Blue Sky Dayton, Vermont Studio Center, Salzburg Kunstlerhaus, Triangle Workshop and Anderson Ranch Art Center residencies, and will take part in the Bemis Center residency program in 2012. Mann is currently an instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
