Opening: With Food in Mind
organized by Nicole Caruth, Independent Curator
“Tell me what you eat, and I shall tell you what you are,” famously wrote the nineteenth-century French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. If what we eat is an integral part of our personal and collective identities, as this statement suggests, what does our food say about us today? With Food in Mind looks at artists’ use of food as subject matter or medium in book arts, print, and digital media spanning the last twenty years. The opening reception will feature a performance by eco-artist Atom Cianfarani.
With Food in Mind is organized by Nicole J. Caruth, Brooklyn based writer and curator. The artists featured in this exhibition are Nava Atlas, Carissa Carman, Atom Cianfarani, Conflict Kitchen (Jon Rubin and Dawn Weleski, with Brett Yasko), The Counter Kitchen (Stefani Bardin and Brooke Singer), Critical Art Ensemble, Mindell Dubansky (with Miriam Schaer and Toby Dubansky), EIDIA (Paul Lamarre and Melissa P. Featured Artist Project: Barbara Page: Book Marks
What is the measure of the days of our lives? The pages of a journal, canceled checks and faded photographs? In the accumulation of dated and discarded debris, Barbara Page looks for telling evidence of what makes us who we are. The centerpiece of this project is a card catalog library file in which the cards of books have been altered and transformed into a visual narrative of said book using drawing, rubber stamping, collage making, and handwriting.
