Odysseus at Hell Gate Performance @Socrates Sculpture Park
RESCHDEULED: AUGUST 29, FROM 6PM UNTIL DUSK.
Processional Arts Workshop joins with local volunteers to transform Socrates Sculpture Park into a kinetic installation that explores the history of New York’s forgotten islands through the lense of Homeric myth. Integrating performing objects, micro-parades, and cyclical performances. Odysseus at Hell Gate pairs texts from the Odyssey with historic accounts of North Brother Island, Hart Island, Mill Rock, and other forgotten places in the city’s maritime shadowlands. Park visitors will assume the role of the homeward-bound hero, using fragmentary charts and haphazard guidance to navigate the capricious currents of New York’s complex island history, from potter’s grounds to pleasure parks to penitentiaries. There is no order or sequence, as characters appear and disappear throughout the park, leaving lost mariners free to wander through a shifting immersive narrative. Odysseus at Hell Gate runs continuously throughout the Park, from 5 to 8 PM.
Goto Izumi, Japanese accordionist, plays one last show in NYC, with an opening performance by A Mighty Castle.

Please join us September 1 as we celebrate our annual global review of the state of things.
This year’s creative drive is likened to beating a dead horse, on the one hand the intensity of the conviction is admirable, while on the other there exists an element of blindsidedness. Such determination is valiant, but is mired by its own conflictive nature.
The question of culture and its survival in a world brought too close too quickly has come to surface. The assimilation into a new referential culture, losing distinction in stride with the loss of physical boundaries and borders, has the purity of differences sacrificed at the hands of technological overkill. A modern reflective now exists and the cry to return and hold on to cultural truths is persistent. Reliance on mythos and the retelling of olde seems to preoccupy youth. The revalidation of historical lines of thought are sought after and the unsequestered purity of ancient simplicity desired.
Displacement, loyalty and home,all questioned by the newly exiled, are under scrutiny. The emigrant struggle and reclamation of place in both country and society runs prevalent in a world where the powerful still attempt to suppress artistic expression and ignore the precedence of such ill conceived notions.
An assemblage of like minds are in unison and their voices against complacency and the habitualization of Man can be heard. The struggle to awaken society and help it come to terms with value and purpose in the face of perpetual distraction is a fight not easily won. Paralleled to this desire to shake society from its copacetic sleep is the direct contradiction of a persistent escapist movement. The desire to transport and redirect society to a more personalized introverted reality weakens the promise of intellectual evolution. The allure of respite is strong; the reemergence of fantastic landscapes offers solace as contemplative future ventures.

R.I.P.N.Y.C. gestures to rip down the opaque veil that institutions such as Chelsea hide behind. We are concerned with the framing of our works in a context that speaks directly to floundering contemporary circumstance. Neither interested in increasing our market value nor bolstering the value of our investors’ collections, we are concerned with making Art that captures the energy of Now. Institutions are collapsing; new innovators are finding fertility amongst the decomposition of the old construct. A widespread changing of the guard is in effect at this very instant. R.I.P.N.Y.C. features drawings, paintings, videos, photographs, prints, soundmixes, and performances by Andrew Birk, Solyi Suh, and Robert W. DeBois.
R.I.P.N.Y.C. is not a gallery, it is a store that sells artwork following retail-based protocol. The artists will be employed during store hours to answer questions and assist clients. There is no hierarchy between the space, the work, the artists, or the viewers.

This September twenty five contemporary artists bring their vision of the surreal to Limner Gallery. This varied and eclectic group of highly accomplished national and international artists will display work in video, painting, photography and sculpture.

“In my videos, I layer rough materials like plaster, cloth, and cardboard to create a textured environment that resembles a three-dimensional, inhabitable painting. While my sets, characters, and plots feel surreal and stylized, they also have a sense of emotional truth. My goal is to bring viewers into an alternate world where logic and physical laws are suspended while depictions of emotion become vivid and honest. I want the story to feel real to the viewer in the way that a fantastic dream can feel real—on a visceral level.
My projects are often inspired by literary sources -including Elizabeth Bishop, Nikolai Gogol and Japanese Folk tales- that portray a character’s uneasy relationship to a world in flux. In my videos, involuntary transformations and spatial distortions disorient the protagonists. One character begins losing pieces of himself and slowly takes on the qualities of a tree, another scales a building and is able to climb through the moon as though it were a hole in the sky. A house transforms into a forest or floats across the ocean. The natural world in these pieces functions as both an idyllic setting, and as a wild site of the unknown.”(Jonathan Ehrenberg)

Ed Kashi talks to Stephen Mayes about some surprising discoveries made while re-editing several decades of work as an eminent photojournalist. Pictures of people reacting to the camera are often discarded as uncomfortable reminders that the photojournalist’s camera can be an intrusion into the world it observes. These previously unseen images pulled from Kashi’s outtakes reveal the world looking right back at him, directly engaging us with his subjects in an array of spontaneous responses to the camera. The pictures are startling in their honesty, telling us much about the subjects and even more about the photographer and the practice of photojournalism. Kashi and Mayes will discuss the exhibition and the questions it raises about the assumed neutrality and invisibility of the photographer, our own role as viewers and the assumptions we make about the world as we see it in photographs.

Bizarro is a genre of fiction that is often considered the literary equivalent to the movies in the cult section of a video store. The simplest way to describe it is fiction that focuses primarily on weirdness. Despite the diversity of the books and that the individual titles can be categorized under almost every fiction genre in thepublishing industry, there are a few components that bizarro books tend to share. These include black humor, absurdism, surrealism, occurrences of the unreal, and shock value.

2 Stages and 3 Days of the Best of New York City-based Independent Music Rocks Brooklyn – All in one Venue! Taking place September 16, 17, and 18 at Littlefield in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
This Fest is a celebration and showcase of the community of vast talent and dedication that fuels the independent music scenes of Brooklyn and the surrounding boroughs. At the heart of the Brooklyn Indie Fest impetus is an attempt to unify various local independent music scenes, artists, and fans – in order to help inspire, motivate and promote these groups collectively. Our plan is to actively bring together NYC’ s best musicians to spread awareness of the groundbreaking music that is being created on a continuous basis in this city.
We have a number of musicians already signed on, and more applications coming in as the word gets around! Special guest performers will be announced down the road, as well as various other programming thrown into the mix. Littlefield – actively supportive of this event and its mission – offers the opportunity of programming on 2 stages, in a gorgeous warehouse-turned-club space, with a full bar, sound system, and just a few blocks from the subway.
RACHELLE GARNIEZ. Dubbed a”Master of Surprise” by Entertainment Weekly, Rachelle writes and performs darkly optimistic story-songs and accompanies herself on a variety of instruments including accordion, piano, claviola, guitar and plastic bells, “…leaving nothing behind but sweet wreckage.” (The New Yorker). Rachelle has released four CDs as well as a single “My House of Peace”, which was produced by Jack White and released on vinyl by Third Man Records. Rachelle also composed the music for Taylor Mac’s epic 5-hour long theater piece “The Lily’s Revenge” which premiered at Here Arts Center October ’09.
Dmitri Slepovitch’s Litvakus and Svetlana Shmulyian’s Jazz Kompot successfully integrate American jazz, Russian jazz, and klezmer as they perform the music of composers who emigrated to the New World from the Former Soviet Union as well as the music of those who were fated to stay behind.
LITVAKUS. The Litvakus band brings to life often overlooked Belarusian and Litvak (Belarusian-Lithuanian) Jewish musical heritage— through the prism of the North-Eastern European music with the touch of classical and jazz, traditional and avant-garde. Backed by generations of klezmorim and muzyki, Litvakus are extending the bridge to the modern audiences worldwide, making the old sound new and fresh, meaningful and hip, Yiddish, New Yorkish and otherwise’ish.
THE SVETLANA SHMULYIAN BAND. Influenced by jazz, Russian chanson, and world music, Svetlana’s voice has at once tenderness, warmth and vulnerability, as well as unexpected edge and power of a seasoned vocalist. Svetlana’s band, Jazz Kompot, is an ensemble of jazz mavens who came together to create a concoction of jazz, swing, and blues. For the night at Barbes, Svetlana will be joined by Jazz Kompot trio, including multi-instrumentalist Alex Alabin and upright bassist Dmitry Ischenko.
