TUESDAY:

PARTICLE ACCELERATOR
Scott Robinson and Rob Garcia are veterans of the traditional jazz scene, and have performed numerous times together in various settings such as Randy Sandke’s group performing the music of Bix Beiderbeck and Eddy Davis’s band. They have also been very involved in the avant guarde performing with such artists as Marshall Allen (Robinson) and Joseph Jarman (Garcia). This trio debut will smash these two worlds (others as well) as they utilize their full scope of experience and visit traditional jazz repertoire with a fresh new approach. The very musical and talented guitarist Nate Radley will also take part. With Scott Robinson – Reeds and other things, Rob Garcia – big old luminescent bass drum and other percussions and Nate Radley – guitar.

The Missing Dimension: A Cultural History of 3D Images in 3D
An overview of the development of three-dimensional images, from the first recognition of the stereoscopic function of our two eyes in ancient times, to Charles Wheatstone’s explanation of binocular vision and his creation of the stereoscope in 1838, and the flood of three dimensional images that followed the invention of photography. We’ll look at the stereograph viewer developed by Oliver Wendell Holmes that was in every Victorian parlor, the View-Master in every baby boomer’s childhood bedroom, red and green anaglyph printing that allowed comic book characters to pop off the page, and the strange story of the development of 3D film. The unique pleasures of the 3D image will be celebrated, and its persistent failure to become the Next Step in photography and film discussed. The lecture will be illustrated entirely and gratuitously in 3D, with glasses provided to all comers.

WEDNESDAY:

Dana Melamed: Transforming Voids/Group Exhibition
This exhibition represents an important milestone in Melamed’swork, namely the transition from wall pieces with three-dimensional elements to sculptures, expanding her narrative of the ongoing power struggle between humanity and nature. In her previous exhibitions, Melamed has been dealing with the effects of human aggression against nature and mankind. The primal drive for survival is ingrained in both the human organism Reflection and nature, thus the struggle is a never-ending cycle.

The Nutcracker (American Ballet Theater)

CNN DIALOGUES: Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender:
Has More Openness Led to More Acceptance? The LGBT community has a long history of participation, activism, and contribution to the fabric of American culture. Its pioneers have paved the way for many policies enacted in corporate America, on Capitol Hill, and within state and local government- all with the aim to include and respect. Now, more than ever before, we find LGBT themes prominently integrated into pop culture and mainstream media. Is the hit television show “Modern Family” pointing us all in the direction of a new American reality?

Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) presents an evening of multimedia, interactive performative-readings highlighting a broad range of born-digital literary forms, including game-inspired, collaborative, database, film/video, generative, and kinetic image work. The evening’s presentations showcase five projects selected from the second Electronic Literature Collection, published in February 2011, and created by Oni Buchanan, Jhave,Illya Szilak, Sandy Baldwin, and collaborators Stephanie Strickland and Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo, with videos by Paul Ryan.

THURSDAY:

David Ellis:True Value
Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present True Value, an exhibition of new and recent work by David Ellis. This is the artist’s debut solo show at the gallery. With his unique blend of humor, vivid imagery, and technical invention, David Ellis channels his love for music into a variety of art genres and media, including painting, sculpture, and video installation. The artist’s kinetic sound sculpture True Value (Paint Fukette) (2011)—a large installation created in collaboration with Roberto Lange, built of discarded paint cans and buckets that beat a syncopated rhythm—was an acclaimed presentation at the recent PULSE New York art fair, winning the 2011 PULSE Prize. The artist has been critically hailed for his freestyle installations inspired by popular music and DJ culture, specifically interpreting the ways in which image, sound, materials, and technology interconnect in the contemporary cultural landscape.

Matthew Picton: “Paper Cities” Opening Reception (Christopher Henry)
The sculptures interweave the narratives of personal and public history and place them within the mapped framework of the urban form. Events both real and imagined are anchored and placed within the architectural spaces of the city site. The works suggest a paradoxical beauty, while the works attest to suffering and loss, they also present an ephemeral fragility.

FRIDAY:

The Super Coda presents: Music for the Apocalypse.
This is funny. No, it is not. This is not funny. Yes, it is funny. Very funny. Very un-funny. Un-very. You are not. You are not very. Yes, very funny. Very un-you. You are you. Don’t be scared. The apocalypse is approaching, and these bands, ensembles, and projects make the top of the list for the Zeitgeist. Let’s take down Forbes, ya’ll. Let’s dance dance dancedancedance but not really. The following performers will reinvent your eardrums and dissemble your psyche, in opposite order of appearance. No joke: The Rex Complex, killer BOB, Dave Treut’s Clarify, Cheating on New York, Hannis Brown.
Ne(x)tworks joins forces with JACK Quartet for these world premiere performances of composer, multi-instrumentalist, and electric harp pioneer Zeena Parkins’s latest work, Spellbeamed.

Stick Up! (Braquage)
Presented by HERE’s Dream Music Puppetry Program, Braquage (Stick Up!) is based on a true story told by godfather to godson and has all the best elements of a classic heist – from scaling skyscrapers and high-octane car chases to run-ins with the mob and ticking time bombs, Stick Up! provides you with the blueprint for the perfect crime.

Strategies for PublicOccupation

On October 7, 2011, in response to the Occupy Wall Street movement, Storefront launched a Call for Ideas entitled “Strategies for Public Occupation” which invited submissions from architects, artists and citizens at large to offer their ideas for enabling acts of communication and action between civil society and the structures of economic and political power. Gathering expertise from the various acts of civil occupation throughout the world during the last months and constrained to one image and one text of maximum 200 words, submissions ranged from the technical to the oneiric. THE SECRET CITY: LIGHT
The longest night of the year is approaching, when the sun will appear to stop at a certain point in the sky and then re-emerge, as if coming back to life. Join us as we celebrate The Winter Solstice in song, image, word and more. Also, we are thrilled to announce our new monthly initiative – CAUSE OF THE MONTH*, where we will select a worthy cause to present to you, our community, with hopes of making a positive impact on the world around us. See below for details. (Last month’s food drive was a huge success, by the way, and thanks to those who made a donation.) And so, LIGHT, let’s spread as much of it as we can, shall we? Hope to see you on the 18th.

Art on Air: Canyon Candy
The Clocktower’s Canyon Candy exhibition features the debut screening of a 16-minute film by Mike Anderson, the result of a year-long collaboration between the artist and the band Javelin. Spaghetti westerns, cowboy fashion, and the sights and sounds of the Wild West inspired the band to create a themed song suite released on 7-inch vinyl. Anderson’s installation at the Clocktower transports the viewer into the set of the film through a sprawling installation in the Main Gallery. Beginning with an entrance through a wind-washed cabin, followed by a winding walk in the canyon’s termite hills and cactus fields, visitors will encounter coyotes, campsites, big sky, and vignette sequences from the film. All paths lead to a saloon-style theater space featuring the full Canyon Candy film – the ideal cowboy den after a long walk through the canyon, complete with strawbale seating, gingham tablecloths, and sasparilla. For the exhibition, Javelin has created a multi-channel surround-sound environment embedded in Anderson’s set, both recreating the film’s ambience and animating the canyon’s vistas through sound effects including crickets, howling winds, and yodeling.
