Ulysses 101 by David Clark

This interactive video was shot on the 101st anniversary of Bloomsday, the fictional day documented in James Joyce’s Ulysses. The piece is a triptych of randomly combined clips of Mary Beth Canty, a musician who was living in Quebec City just around the corner from where I was doing a residency at La Chambre Blanche that summer. As well there are animated collages that use excerpts from the text on page 101 of ‘Ulysses’ by James Joyce woven into the piece. There are 101 clips that are triggered by the viewer’s click. The piece was inspired by the spirit of Joyce’s novel to capture the day in the life of a person and it is also an interactive mash-up of the Joyce’s words.

Nora the barnacle goose –

the giggle fit of bronze by gold –

the blind stripling piano tuner tap tap tapping along –

Plumtree’s Potted Meats, which can make of each home an abode of bliss –

Rose of Castille and rows of cast steel –

met him pike hoses –

Come forth, Lazarus!  And he came fifth and lost the job –

On his wise shoulders through the checkerwork of leaves the sun flung spangles, dancing coins –

Private Carr and his escalating oath –

lame Gerty limping, a dreamer –

those lovely seaside girls –

the heaventree of stars hung with humid nightblue fruit –

Fair City

Head to Temple bar
down cobbled streets
Singing along to distant beats
From basement night clubs crammed with bodies swaying
People enjoying city life and staying
for the weekend in Dublin city.

Where the girls are so pretty
Teetering in high heels
For pints in O’neills
Tapping on their mobile phone
On streets where once walked Molly Malone.

She didn’t own Manolos or Jimmy choos
Impractical and expensive shoes
Not designed for walking very far
Only meant for car to bar.

They’re all so Alive alive oh
As they go with the flow
Drinking cider and fat frogs
Not Guinness or hair of the dog
Like people in days gone by.

I can almost hear the cry
Of Ulysses
At their sophisticated ways.

At present living in Pays de Loire, France. Works in oils or acrylics on board or canvas. Use of collage and newpaper as principal part of design.
Living in the heart of the Andulucian mountains, poor and frustrated, I turned to painting as a way of release.  I soon discovered it was my missing link the part that is always in front of you but you never see!  Spain gave me the colours I love and the passion I feel.  Inspired by a Picasso  documentary and the simple way he used shape, form and colour allowed me to do my latest collection. I love the characters of the normal man or woman in the street and I’ve endeavored to capture this in its simplist form. The first of our Bloomsday contest submissions are arriving.
