Director, producer, activist, musician and Academy award winning actor Tim Robbins was born in West Covina, California on October 16, 1958 and raised in New York City. He began acting in the early ’80s and went on to star in such films as Bull Durham, Jacob’s Ladder, The Player, The Shawshank Redemption, The Hudsucker Proxy and Mystic River. He won a Best Supporting actor for the latter, and was nominated for Best Director for 1995’s Dead Man Walking. In 2010, Robbins rleased his debut album, Tim Robbins & the Rogues Gallery Band, a nine-track collection of self-described “raggle taggle and rousing gypsy Americana,” produced by Hal Willner, which featured the talents of Kate St. John, Leo Abrahams, David Coulter, Roger Eno, Rory McFarlane, Andrew Newmark and Dudley Phillips.

The Center is pleased to continue its series of Art Study Tours. Class will be taught off-site, behind-the-scenes at various institutions, collections, and artists’ studios. This summer series will take advantage of the cultural resources in New York City and will focus on color and the uses and making of pigments. Consisting of 3 visits throughout the city this July and August, students may sign up for all three in the series or just for one class, each taking place on a Thursday afternoon.
Illuminating Fashion at the Morgan Library and Museum. Visit this special exhibition and discover the uses of color in medieval manuscripts with an expert in the field, Karen Gorst. Drawn from the Morgan’s collections, over fifty illuminated medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and early printed books are featured in the exhibition. Join us and discover the difference between the depictions of contemporary fashions and the actual colors used in clothing of the time period. Students will discuss from a historical perspective the process of making paints and dyes. The exhibition will be used as a backdrop for a discussion on the different artistic techniques employed to produce the color in medieval manuscripts and on fabric from the medieval period.

Painting: a process, a reflection, an expression.
With the series “Confluence,” Jess Hartely explores all-over abstraction. She begins her work by creating a series of thin layers from which the painting begins to emerge and take on its own form. Depth and color develop as the painting is built up with each layer. She uses masonite board because it resists the water and does not absorb it like canvas would. This extended period of fluidity allows her to explore risk and uncertainty. For Hartley, abstraction is all about the experiment. The work in this series is rooted in Hartley’s own imagination, but follows the rules of experimental process that she has developed.

Out of an anonymous 1870 pocket-size diary bestowed on historian Ben Feldman, a fantastic story emerged, and a 100-year old rent in the cloth of a family’s history was repaired. Feldman will share the tale of Henry Knight Dyer (1846-1911), Brooklyn born and bred, who rose from a modest Fort Greene home and his first job as an office boy in the Dennison Paper Products Co. to become president of that multi-national enterprise at the turn of the twentieth century. Dyer’s daily scribblings in a cheap paper volume, as a single 24-year old living in Brooklyn and working in lower Manhattan, inspired Feldman’s lengthy journey for the truth of this man’s life and his wife’s sorry end after less than a year’s widowhood.

Nicholas Elliott was raised in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and lives in Woodside, Queens. His plays have been performed in Luxembourg, France, and Denmark. He is a correspondent for French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma and the company manager for the theater company New York City Players. His poems appear in BOMB’s summer literary supplement, First Proof.
Richard Maxwell is a playwright and director living in New York. He is the artistic director of New York City Players. A volume of his plays from 1996–2000 has been published by Theatre Communications Group. His most recent play, Neutral Hero, premiered in May at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels and recently toured Europe. Maxwell interviewed actor Scott Shepherd for BOMB’s summer issue.
Sarah V. Schweig‘s poems have appeared in Boston Review, Painted Bride Quarterly, Western Humanities Review, and Verse Daily. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Columbia University, where her manuscript was recipient of the David Craig Austin Memorial Award. Her chapbook, S, is available through Dancing Girl Press. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. Her poems appear in BOMB’s summer literary supplement, First Proof.
Scott Shepherd is a New-York based actor. Most recently, Shepherd took on the roles of two characters in The Wooster Group’s production of Tenessee Williams’s Vieux Carré. His performance as Nick Carraway in Elevator Repair Service’s acclaimed Gatz, for which he delivered most of the narration in the nearly seven-hour production, earned him a 2011 Obie Award. Shepherd was interviewed by playwright and director Richard Maxwell in BOMB’s summer issue.
Simon Van Booy is a New York-based novelist and short-story writer born in London and raised in rural Wales. He has published two collections of stories: The Secret Lives of People in Love (2007), and Love Begins in Winter (2009), which won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. He has also edited three books of philosophy: Why We Fight, Why We Need Love, and Why Our Decisions Don’t Matter. His novel Everything Beautiful Began After is just out from Harper Perennial. His conversation with author Siri Hustvedt appears in BOMB’s summer issue.

The Guinness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata at the Morris Museum in Morristown, New Jersey is one of the finest collections of automata–or moving mechanical toys popular in the 18th Century and 19th Centuries–in the world. Compiled over 50 years by heir to the Guinness beer fortune Murtogh D. Guinness (1913-2002), the collection features scores of immaculately preserved historic automata–many of them produced in 19th Century France–with subjects ranging from snake charmers to magicians, singing birds to anthropomorphic monkeys, Cleopatra in her death throes to a waltz-playing Mephistopheles; it also includes a number of mechanical musical instruments and a variety of programmed media ranging from player piano rolls to pinned cylinders.

The Architecture of Devotion group show continues this Friday, July 1st with a night of great music by returning players: Apocalypse Five and Dime, Morgan O’kane, and Crooks and Perverts. These guys put on an amazing show with us back in April with moments like these:

ABOUT THE SHOW:
The Architecture of Devotion is a large scale group art, music and performance event hosted by the Gowanus Ballroom.
The exhibition transforms the cathedral-like Gowanus Ballroom, a nineteenth century steel mill and current home of Serrett Metalworks, to interrogate various representations of the sacred and profane.
Works including stained glass, paintings embellished with gilt adornment, modern reinventions of medieval retables, a cabinet of curiosities, and an enchanted grotto form an installation that explores themes of spirituality, mysticism and religion. Revisiting historic interpretations of divine presence through a contemporary lens allows artist and audience to reconsider what might at first glance appear mundane.

Dumbo Arts Center’s current exhibition is (The Missing Library). This summer, artist Annie Shaw has invited five artists (Jen Kennedy & Liz Linden, Marie Lorenz, Michelle Rosenberg and Angie Waller), an architect (Lori Brown) and two librarians (A.G. Graham and web-specialist Nate Hill) to turn DAC into a civic, non-commercial public space in the form of the Dumbo neighborhood’s first library. The project encourages contemplation on how libraries’ function, physical space, and role within communities is changing as the content libraries have traditionally housed migrates to a digital form.
PABLO MALAURIE. Pablo Malaurie hails from Buenos Aires playing original folklore on banjo and ukelele, songs that are sweet, timeless and oddly global. Soaring melodies evoke geisha girls and Buddy Holly in equal parts. He scored a Romanian film that premiered at this year’s Cannes, Loverboy, and released El Festival Del Beso in Japan. Pablo’s voice can pierce through you in a painful tremelo and then soothe your broken heart with a pleasing, unexpected harmony. KCRW’s Jose Galvan says, “Malaurie combines both Japanese and South American folk rhythms with a minimalist approach. Some songs recreate traditional Japanese melodies simply using a mandolin banjo and a haunting falsetto. Others integrate rhythms more akin to indigenous music of the Andes. Add to that introspective lyrics and his affected Argentine accent and you’ve got the perfect soundtrack for a road trip in the Japanese countryside a la Motorcycle Diaries.”
Accordionist Rob Curto’s band plays Northeastern Brazil’s traditional “forró pé de serra” with a style born out of New York City’s diverse and dynamic musical culture. Forró is the accordion-based party music of the sertão, the dry interior of the Brazilian Northeast. Accordion master Rob Curto leads this ensemble which combines the classic brazilian Northeast forros of Luis Gonzagua and Jackson do Pandeiro with original compositions and improvisation rolled into an amazing dance party

June 23 – July 30, 2011The life of an artist can be a nomadic one, for any number of reasons, amongst them financial, emotional and spiritual. In many instances, artists find more support and camaraderie in large urban areas, and for quite a few all roads eventually lead to New York (or London or Berlin). The four artists comprising “Migration”, the summer show opening June 23rd at Freight+Volume, are no exception.
Flux Factory is proud to present Specter Flux , an interactive environment and performance by artist-in-residence Peter Edwards, aka casperelectronics. The installation consists of three suspended orbs that glow at varying hues according to the sounds of its surroundings, including the ambient noise of the space and those made by the viewer. Its interior mechanism – a hybrid circuit using both digital and analogue electronics – transforms sound into an evolving display of multicolored lights. The performative element includes a constructed pyramid centered around a complex sound and light synthesizer that the artist plays. Viewers are invited to interact with the machine throughout the show.
This day-long event explores the practical, philosophical, and playful applications of the term “hacking.” Presentations and workshops will cover topics such as circuit bending, culture jamming, dumpster diving, email encryption, and the repurposing of waste items into useful tools. The symposium is geared towards providing visitors with foundational information in order to become hackers themselves. Hackposiumis part of Flux Factory’s Summer School program and is curated by Jaime Iglehart via New Age Beverages, in collaboration with Pete Edwards of Casper Electronics.
Demos of hacked objects and freegan snacks start at 4pm.
Talks and presentations start at 6 pm, and are followed by musical performances.

Hamyul/Hamlet is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. The play is set in one of the ancient dynasties in Korea. The original Prince Hamyul, a Korean adaptation of Hamlet by William Shakespeare was presented to Western audiences in the United States and Europe in 1977. Adapted and directed by Minsoo Ahn, Prince Hamyul was the first Korean theatrical production ever performed outside Korea, making an indelible mark on the history of Korean theater thanks to the late Ellen Stewart at La MaMa.

This Saturday, come to Storefront to explore and enter Daniel Arsham/Snarkitecture’s performance installation DIG. Group excursions into the installation will be led by the artist, Daniel Arsham.
On March 1, 2011, Daniel Arsham/Snarkitecture, began DIG, an experiment to construct new spatial relations and programs that emerge from the interplay between drawing, materiality and performance.
From Daniel Arsham/Snarkitecture:
“Dig explores the architecture of excavation. Storefront’s distinctive gallery space will be filled with a solid volume of EPS architectural foam, engulfing the existing interior in an unyielding flood of white. The volume will then be excavated using simple tools – hammers, picks and chisels – to transform a stock industrial material into a strange, unexpected cavern for both work and play.
Dig is an experiment between the precision of the architectural plan and the looseness of the unknown. The installation and performance explore an intersection of primitivism and contemporary architecture; the complexity of the final surfaces and form suggests a digital origin and conceals the simplicity of a space made entirely by hand. The solid volume is excavated and inhabited by basic necessity, but also engages in careful play with the existing architecture of Storefront. Dig uncovers the inconceivable within the conceivable.”
DIG will be developed in three stages:
Exhibition. In an act of pre-representation, the exhibition will showcase a series of studies developed a priori in relationship to questions of form (in relation to the gallery’s idiosyncratic plan and façade) and program (desires and notions of inhabitation and play). These studies, materialized in the medium of conceptual models are an elaboration of works that shift from plan, to elevation to section to material studies. (March 1-March 28)
Installation. The gallery will be filled almost in its totality, transforming the entire space into a deep façade where the pieces on display will be intensified by different points and lines of vision perceptible from both the interior of Storefront and the gallery space of the street. (March 29 – April 4)
Performance. In the third and final stage, Arsham/Snarkitecture will both create and inhabit Dig for the duration of the subsequent month-long installation, carving spaces first for inhabitation and in a second stage for collective gatherings in a performance open to public view. (April 5-23)
At the close of the exhibition, all material will be returned to the manufacturer and recycled into rigid foam insulation, leaving no evidences or traces behind.
Parallel to the exhibition, a series of talks, excursions and encounters happening inside the work in progress will address the emerging forms of the installation in relation to contemporary notions of collectivity and inhabitation in the quest for moments of architectural reinvention and surprise.
Daniel Arsham (1980, Cleveland)
Daniel Arsham’s practice straddles the lines between art, architecture and performance. With a penchant for collaboration his expanded practice has included collaborations with Merce Cunningham, Hedi Slimane, Robert Wilson and Jonah Bokaer. He makes architecture do things it’s not supposed to do, mining everyday experience for opportunities to confuse and confound our expectations of space and form. Simple yet paradoxical gestures dominate his sculptural work: a façade that appears to billow in the wind, a white cube eroded on all sides like a glacier, a figure wrapped up in the surface of a wall. Structural experiment, historical inquiry, and satirical wit all combine with consummate technical skill in Arsham’s ongoing interrogation of the real and the imagined.
Snarkitecture is a collaborative practice operating in territories between the disciplines of art and architecture. Working within existing spaces or in collaboration with other artists and designers, the practice focuses on the investigation of structure, material and program and how these elements can be manipulated to serve new and imaginative purposes. Searching for sites within architecture with the possibility for confusion or misuse, Snarkitecture aims to make architecture perform the unexpected.
