04/02/2012-04/30/2012
8pm-
Unique in the realm of approaches to improvisational conducting, Go: Organic Orchestra utilizes a composed non-linear score consisting of sound and motion elements. These include tone rows, synthetic scales, melodies, linguistic shapes, intervallic patterns, textural gestures, modes, ragas, maqams, and plainchant. The score serves to provide material for both the improvisations and the orchestrations. Motion and forms and are generated through the application of the composer’s rhythm concept “Cyclic Verticalism” whereby polymeters are combined with additive rhythm cycles.
JAMES GODWIN LUNATIC CUNNING

04/06/2012-04/21/2012
7:30pm-
A semi-autobiographical “mockumentary” from a puppetry and performance art pioneer. Lunatic Cunning mixes experiences from Godwin’s own life—such as his work with Julie Taymor on Across the Universe and appearances on Saturday Night Live, Chappelle’s Show, PBS and with Jim Henson’s Muppets. It’s a humorous examination of the occult roots of puppetry and performance art.

ITINERANT 2012 focuses on live performative works that treat notions of intimacy, self-reflection, and introspection. Forty five artists will be featuring new and existing works that explore the program’s theme over a period of 5 weeks starting on March 30th through May 5th.
THE WEEKEND: MARCH 2-4.
EDITOR’S PICKS:
Liz Biddle, Regine Granne, and Katherine Tzu-lan Mann at A.I.R. Gallery
http://www.airgallery.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.artists&artistid=885
03/01/2012-03/24/2012
6pm-9pm
This exhibition showcases Biddle’s continuing interest in mixed media, with a twist of humor found in much of her work. Old wires, light bulbs, screws and other found objects protrude from holes in ceramic objects, while creature-like robots – strange, disturbing and endearing – appear in collages and drawings. Liberty is a contemplation of the present in the wake of 9/11. The Statue of Liberty itself simultaneously represents an overused icon and a diminishing concept. These works offer a means of viewing such images and enable reflection of our world, our nation, our politics, our person, our perspective, and our relationship to all. Mann’s large paintings in Root, created by combining chance stains with highly rendered decorative elements on oversized, un-stretched paper, function as human-sized portholes into a landscape alive with minute details, patterns and interlocking systems.

02/22/2012-02/25/2012
8pm-9:30pm
BOTANICA is a creepy futuristic black comedy that examines our complicated relationship to plant life. Sealed in a human terrarium, two unorthodox botanists and a caretaker with a penchant for erotic literature unleash a flood of unusual findings and overturn the constraints of science and social norms. Riotously lush” and “a perverse kick.” -New York Times “Sex, drugs, and
botany? Plants will never seem the same after Jim Findlay’s BOTANICA, an original, mesmerizing, and disturbing piece of experimental insanity.” Flavorpill “If you’ve had your fill of tame/lame Broadway shows, are a fan of Sci-Fi, and happen to have dendrophilia, this show is perfect for you.” Papermag “If you’re into what’s probably the most expertly sculpted piece of weirdness in town, then I assure you, BOTANICA’s got the goods.” NYtheatre.com

Dario Azzellini, Immanuel Ness & Victor Wallis
Capitalism would have us believe we need our bosses. This volume, edited by Immanuel Ness and Dario Azzellini, reveals the history of workers who dare to disagree. From the dawning of the industrial epoch, wage earners have gone so far as to challenge the very premises of the system by creating institutions of democratic self-management aimed at controlling production without bosses. With specific examples drawn from every corner of the globe and every period of modern history, this new book comprehensively traces this often underappreciated historical tradition. GRAND OPENING @ROULETTE – Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed and John Zorn/GRAND OPENING – COSA BRAVA featuring Fred Frith, Carla Kihlstedt, Zeena Parkins, Matthias Bossi, Shahzad Ismaily, and the Norman Conquest
Sat Sep 17 – 8:00 PM and Sun Sep 18 – 8:00 PM
Three legends of the New York Underground combine forces for an evening of extreme improvised music. “The most important multimedia artist of our time,”(LA Times), Laurie Anderson is best known for her multimedia presentations and musical recordings that have challenged and delighted audiences around the world for more than 30 years. Tonight Anderson teams up with husband Lou Reed – arguably one of the most influential musicians in rock history whose band, the Velvet Underground, redefined the music of the late ’60s. Also joining them tonight is maverick composer/performer and godfather of the Downtown New York scene, John Zorn.
FIRST ARTIST’S OPEN FORUM with Pablo Malaurie and Andru Bemis.
This Thursday we’ll be hosting not only two great musicians but also what we hope is attempt to forge some channels for struggling artists, musicians or writers in New York City and beyond.
It’s not easy these days being an artist in New York City.
Money is tight. Restrictions are tighter. Social and media communications are becoming vastly more advanced and input is sometimes overwhelming compared to basic human experience and communication.
The separation and animosity that one sometimes confronts with the “art world” and otherwise can be daunting.
Many artists are also not given the luxury of structures to use as a launch pad and on numerous occasion even artists who do have those structures are lost or frustrated when stepping into the professional arena of New York City. Some artists are taken advantage of. Some artists are treated in a manner that would otherwise be considered unacceptable and the idea of “fame and fortune” through artwork seems an increasingly unrealistic goal in our current economy.
Now having said that, there are NUMEROUS people and organizations in New York that seek to aid young and old artists, and the ability of artists to take action and organize is an inspiring thing. Likewise there are incredibly successful artists and organizations that produce art in a sustainable and healthy way that aids our economy, our environment and other artists.
In future forums we seek to invite these people to communicate directly with artists, musicians and writers in a neutral setting.
We will discuss many topics, not limited to civility and behavior in arts interactions.
Artists rights and organizational rights. Safeguards and protections for artists in business interactions. The role of galleries and their place in modern and digital society. Copyright and free use issues. The “cult” and mythology of the art, music and writing world and much much more.
At our first forum a form will be handed out to voice your concerns on. You can choose to be contacted directly if we find a solution to your problem or remain anonymous. If you would like to fill out a form before the forum and bring it the day of you can download the form HERE or below.
This is a place for dialogue and discussion and the only thing you can do wrong here is remain silent in the face of issues you are concerned about. ALL FORUMS ARE COMPLETELY FREE. We’ll ask for a donation at the door but its a request, not a demand. Profits go towards sustaining future forums and towards printing and event costs for The 22 Magazine.
(Please also note that although we seek artists, writers and musicians we feel reflect the spirit of open dialogue, our performers are in no way responsible for the content or opinions of Open Forum unless specifically stated otherwise.)
Are you an artist, musician, writer or organization who would like to participate in a future Artist’s Open Forum or perform at one? If so please contact us directly at the22magazine {at} gmail.com
