Ugly Art Room presents, All That Remains @ Picture Farm.

Artist and curator, Charles Wilkin took the time to chat with The 22 about the upcoming collage show All That Remains presented by Ugly Art Room at Picture Farm in Brooklyn. Resourcing from a VAST pool of collage artists, the show is dynamic, bold and most of all, really fun. The show opens Oct 21st, with an reception from 7-9pm at Picture Farm (338 Wythe Ave.)

The 22 Magazine: You happen to be a collage artist yourself, correct? Tell me what it is that first got you hooked on collage and what you love about it?

Charles Wilkin: Yes I’m a collage artist. It’s funny because I sort of fell into collage by accident in college. I was late for a drawing class and forgot to bring my pencils and paper. I ran across the hall with nothing more than a stack of photos I’d just printed from my photo class. Instead of smacking my hand with a ruler for being unprepared my instructor said ” well use those photos”. Clearly she saw something in what I had done that day and encouraged me to make more collages. I guess what I love about collage is it’s immediacy and the happy little accidents that happen along the way. I love not knowing where I’m going until I get there and with collage I can sort of get lost in the moment. I think that’s what I really love about it most, for me it’s very freeing.

THE 22 MAGAZINE: Why did you choose to live and work in Berlin?

APRIL GERTLER: I finished graduate school and had done an exchange program in Germany and Frankfort at an art school there, and I was sort of weighing my pros and cons. I had always wanted to live in Europe. My father’s from Hungary, and my mother’s from Holland. I thought about living in Holland, but having this chance to be in Frankfort had been really exciting, and Berlin has always been this kind of city of promise. Berlin is really exciting and just offers so much. There is so much vastness and openness. There is still this feeling of opportunity, but the opportunity is very much there for you to develop yourself, which is what I also find really difficult about living in Berlin. There is a huge positive, but the huge negative is that there’s not a lot of energy coming from the city. What I mean is, here, in New York, you walk on the street and there’s sort of this vibration. There’s this buzz because there are so many people in the street; you feel people’s energy and get electrified from that. It doesn’t exist in Berlin. It’s a very slow city. It’s very calm. That is why I really like it, although, it’s very hard to get motivated. So, there’s this challenge with the city.

It’s finally here! April Gertler was SO kind to do this interview during a trip over from Berlin promoting her project PICTURE BERLIN. Even in the midst of a terrible cold she spoke eloquently and with the kind of grace that is evident in all of her work. Like her pieces, April herself is subtle and wonderfully complex at the same time. Her collages speak to her background in social science, and often include witty or poignant references to collective and personal histories.

I’ve had the very great pleasure of seeing some of these pieces in person and each one of them is so uniquely lovely. April will talk about this and other projects in the forthcoming video interview for the 22 but in the meantime help her make it happen!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

In October 2010 I was invited to Paris for an artist residency at l’entreprise culturelle. Out of that residency came DAMP PATCHES – which is a new collection of work I developed into an artist book that mixes my collage work with photography and drawing. The title of the book comes from the loose translation of a deodorant ad from the French fashion magazine Votre Beaute (1973): Prisonnière des taches d’humidité sous les bras. – A prisoner of damp patches.

I like working with collage because I enjoy using original source materials such as found photographs, fashion magazine ads, and bits and pieces that I find on the street or in the trash, and the hands-on experience of working with paper, glue, scissors and thread. It feels increasingly relevant to use a hands-on approach as many other parts of my life are being swallowed by the digital world.

I use collage as my primary medium because I feel it is the best way for me to combine images and explore various concepts that interest me the most, such as; the complex dynamics of intimate relationships, female empowerment, and the anonymity of urban life. I am dedicated to my original source materials which tend to restrict the final size of my work, but in that way they become more precious and intimate for the viewer, DAMP PATCHES has challenged my continuing understanding of what collage can become.

The idea of creating a book surrounding the project came together when I was speaking to my colleague and friend, Eduardo Serafim about DAMP PATCHES. Eduardo co-founded AML-Press in February 2011, and suggested that AML print the book with their newly acquired Risograph printer; a machine part Xerox copier, part offset press which has the quality of a silkscreen.

The Risograph machine was not initially intended for artist books or printed projects but rather for high volume commercial use. I loved the idea of using the Riso because the quality and texture of the images produced by the machine highly compliment the source material I use in my work which typically comes from the 1960’s – 1980’s.

The final book will marry the low-tech feel of the collage work with the high tech printing method of the Riso. As a result the collages and photographs will be the same size and the same texture as the original works. I am really enthusiastic about this part of the project because it helps me push my practice further by exploring my interest in all 3 mediums and takes them to a new level.

The funding I’m requesting would support the production of the book by supplementing the printing costs, paper, assembly, and shipping/distribution of the finished book.

The book would be:

  • 36 pages
  • Book size (closed) 8.5″ x 11.5″
  • Printed on the Risograph
  • Staple binding
  • Edition of 300

This past summer marked our first Summer Session, which was extremely successful – with artists representing 8 countries, putting together 2 exhibitions and creating new bodies of work that far exceeded each artist’s expectations. Ultimately PICTURE BERLIN did what any residency should do – it pulled out the best in each artist.

THE 22 MAGAZINE

Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of the world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment. Created in 2008 by artist Will Varner, Scroll Bowl was a unique way for artists and illustrators to present their work large scale and interactively. In 2009 Will Varner left the Scroll Bowl project to pursue a professional illustration career and artist/curator John Jennison took over the project. After accepting Jennison as one of the premier issue contributors,The 22 Magazine partnered with him to present Scroll Bowl as both a performance and installation event. Drawing from an array of traditions, commentary and communication, Scroll Bowl V presents a modern look at the scroll as both an object and as a tool.

THE 22 MAGAZINE

The 22 is annual arts and literature online magazine that seeks to explore connections and intersections between the works of artists, musicians and writers. In some portions of The 22 the structure is presented as a diptych or sometimes triptych, allowing the viewer to actively participate in the task of opening the hinges that link conversation between the pieces.

The 22 Show was formed to showcase the talents of each issue’s contributors. This year’s show will feature performances, music, reading and film work from several of the artists and writers. By forming a collective group and by carefully selecting contributors whose work is enhanced through combination, The 22 Show is a comparison and celebration of the voice of the artist as solo and unified.
