Mike Perry is raising money for a new sort of “open door” art exhibit. If you haven’t been introduced to the electric, neon world of Mike Perry you’re in luck. His current kickstarter project is to raise money for an exhibition that will not only celebrate the culmination of his monograph, Wondering Around Wandering, but also offer a place of interaction, socialization and discussion for local artists. As a bonus you’ll probably get to meet the bevy of adorable dogs in Mike’s kickstarter video and his perks are some of the best I’ve seen with amazing prints at the $20 level and one of a kind wood pieces at the $300 level and above.
We asked Mike to take a few moments and talk a little about the project. Check out his interview below and make sure you DONATE!
The 22 Magazine: You’ve worked with a lot of folks and brands. What has been your favorite artistic or design experience in New York so far and why?
Mike Perry: Oh man there have been so many amazing collaborations. I love working with Nike and Target. They have been very supportive. I just started working with Duvel and they have been so great to work for. So supportive of the creative world, excited about my ideas and willing to really push the collaborations.
22: You’ve got a few furry friends running around your studio in the video, what’s your dog’s name?
MP: I have yet to secure a space but I want something big that people can get lost in. A place where you can just wander around and wonder.
22: Where did the WAW title come from?
MP: I just feel like that is what I am doing with my life. Trying to keep my eyes and mind open.
22: Tell us a little more about that tackle box of paint that started it all?
MP: My grandfather Tom was this eccentric artist in Missouri. We had a very funny relationship. He never really took the opportunity to get to know me but I think he knew that I was the person in the family that would keep the prolific journey he started going. I wish I would have had the chance to get to know him.
22: Why did you want your first Brooklyn exhibition to be interactive? What is important to you about have an “open exhibition”?
MP: When I was young my favorite museums where places that you could touch and get lost in the work. A lot of exhibitions are a little stuffy and hard for people to break into. I want my work to feel open and warm. I want to spark the minds of my young audience and show them that they can do this to. But I also want the art connoisseur to remember that there is another way to experience creativity.
22: Why do you think Brooklyn is the best place for this?
MP: I wouldn’t say Brooklyn is the best place for this but I live here so it seems like a great place to start. I would love for this to be very successful and be able to take this on the road to any city that will welcome it.
22: Will you be recording any of the interactions with people at the space?
22: What other artists may be working with you on this project or who would you like to ask?
MP: It really depends on how the fund-raising goes. I am going to build a big sculpture with my good friend Jim Stoten that will be on display. And I am working on a zine with a writer friend Francis Parrilli
About this project
We’re thrilled to announce that the Second Annual Kickstarter Film Festival will be held the evening of Saturday, July 9th in Brooklyn, New York, on the roof of the Old American Can Factory. We hope that you can join us!
The festival will feature 100 minutes of footage from 16 projects. The clips will range anywhere from two to ten minutes in length, and will include feature films, documentaries, shorts, project videos, animation, video art, and music videos.
There will be tasty snacks and other goodies from two amazing Kickstarter-funded eateries (Brooklyn’s Colonie and Soho’s What Happens When), beverages from City ‘Lasses, and ice cream from Phinizy & Phebe. There will also be activities from Kickstarter creators, including lucid dreaming lessons from Oneironautics, pics with the Magnolia Photo Booth, and animated GIFs turned into physical zoetropes.
Seating for the festival is divided into two sections: rooftop and courtyard. Both are great! The venue features two screens, one for each section. The rooftop section is located on top of the Old American Can Factory and the courtyard section is just beneath it. The afterparty will be held in the courtyard.
Doors will open at 7pm. Films will begin promptly at 9pm.

As devilishly funny, irrepressible and irreverent as the former Roulette Sisters frontwoman is live, a lot of this album is rivetingly dark. Minch’s solo debut is a sparse, terse collection of both original and classic acoustic blues songs, several of them imbued with Minch’s signature wit, but it also shows off an altogether different side of her writing. As any good blueswoman knows, the blues can pack a mighty emotional wallop, and Minch sings with an unflinching honesty, even anguish in places. Minch’s soulful, passionate alto voice resounds over old-school instrumentation.

NURTUREart Non-Profit is pleased to present VIDEOROVER: Season II, the second installment of its semi-annual video series. VIDEOROVER: Season II is curated by Rachel Steinberg and features artists: Fatima Al Qadiri and Lyndsy Welgos, Cecilia Bonilla, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Derek Larson, Dana Levy, Pernille With Madsen, Colin Snapp, and JULIACKS.
VIDEOROVER seeks to present a wide range of works from artists locally and internationally who are all working to expand the perceptual limitations of video. This season’s selection aims to disorient viewers by removing an essential reality context, only to redeposit them into seemingly familiar settings.
Dana Levy, Fatima Al Qadiri and Lyndsy Welgos explore the pluralism of eastern and western conventions by looking at traditions through a contemporary perspective. Cecilia Bonilla examines our relationships to the seductive nature of commercial images of women through minimal manipulation, while Juan Pablo Echeverri shows us a self-projected fantasy of mass-produced femininity. Colin Snapp acts as a ‘journalist’ of sorts, documenting moments of real-time, but relieving the viewer of imposed intentions. Pernille With Madsen dizzies and disorients us with a vision of how to imagine architectural surroundings. Derek Larson’s playful experimentations extend through other worldly humor while JULIACKS’ narrative pulls back and forth between a character’s inner psyche and external world. (READ MORE.)

Olek’s acclaimed installation “Knitting is for Pus****” has created a total sensation since it 1st opened back in September 2010. It traveled to SCOPE MIAMI, and was extended repeatedly due to pop…ular demand and endless press requests… next it will be highlighted in a traveling museum show called “40 Under 40″ opening at The SMITHSONIAN Museum in 2012!
Two terrific improvisers are on tour and will be performing one night in NYC , Joe Burgio and Andrew Eisenberg, two of Boston’s most creative and strongest performers.

Pub(l)ic Identities: Reading Medical Representations of Sex
“It’s a girl!” “It’s a boy!”… The genitals, those body parts conventionally expected to remain most hidden, are also the first and most powerful shapers of our public identity. In this illustrated talk, medical artist Shelley Wall considers how sexual anatomy, gendered bodies, and dimorphic sex have been represented in the visual discourse of medicine. From early anatomical atlases through to present-day clinical illustrations and the Visible Human datasets, medical imagery has influenced ideas about sexual identity and what it means to be “normal”.

In Nocturnes, Bickerton’s third solo exhibition at Lehmann Maupin, the artist revisits mankind’s antithetical attraction and repulsion to the grotesque, exotic, and sexual. Whereas previous works depicted abundant worlds of health, happiness, family, and cohesion, Bickerton has become disillusioned with the brilliance and wholesomeness that colored these preceding works, now drawing inspiration from the phrase ‘twisting and flapping in the neon wilderness’. In today’s class, learn the mummification process as described in the “Egyptian Book of the Dead” (Book of Coming Forth By Day). Instructor Sorceress Cagliastro will guide students in the use of the traditional materials–such as natron salts, canopic jars, oils and herbs, dried flowers and linen or gauze wraps–and traditional ritual–such as ritual of the opening of the mouth–in the creation of an authentic and perfectly respected animal mummy. Jim Sullivan at Nancy Hoffman Gallery

The next exhibition at Nancy Hoffman Gallery will be new graphite drawings of trees by Jim Sullivan, opening on May 26th and continuing through July 1st. This is the artist’s
first solo show in six years, and reveals a new vista onto nature. His last show included a series of horizontal landscapes, wide cinematic views into invented
detailed oriented oils. The artist delighted in painting myriad details. These were obsessive paintings,
and as the artist says: “The new drawings, the work of the past five years, present the same viewing issues
as the long landscapes, in that they have normal viewing distance but offer a close scrutinizing experience
(of infinite detail) on closer examination.”
Two new projects filtering through the feed that caught my eye. One is the handiwork of Jeffery Bowers, THE PRISIM INDEX. Limited edition, handmade, silkscreened, mixed-media book complete with images (DVD) and sound (CD) featuring a gratuitous amount of artists. It’s the kind of project most editor’s cringe at and you’ve got to admire not only the quality of the work but the sheer gumption of the undertaking. Not to mention the interesting Kickstarter video.
