WHY: Join us, Thursday July 26th for the Chelsea Art Walk and opening of Field Projects Show #6: How to Write a Novel. This exhibition centers on the labor and characterization of writing a novel. It draws a parallel between the source material of writing a novel and making art. Often the most potent source of inspiration for artists and novelists alike comes from the private, seemingly mundane aspects of our own lives. How to Write a Novel features drawings of text, photographs, receipts, books and the mesh-mash debris in an author/artist’s life. The artists in this exhibition include Polina Barskaya, Aaron Krach, Karl LaRocca, Thomas Marquet, Siobhan McBride, and Martin McMurray.

WHY: Modeled on the Parisian acoustic jazz bands of the 1930s. While its instrumentation (violin, acoustic guitar, accordion and bass) has a distinctly continental sonic texture, the repertoire of this group is as diverse as Brooklyn itself. The technical mastery of its performers allows the group to slide gracefully between a burning Basie stomp to a slow Texas waltz without skipping a beat. Fronted by the vocalist Gretchen Vitamvas, the Hot Club of Flatbush is sure to please any musical palette. Stephane Wrembel is back next month.

In Dancing with Divorced Men, the artist records herself dancing with middle-aged, divorced men in their homes, allowing them to function as surrogates for her father. In Trust Falls, she collaborates with divorced men to stage intimate activities that require a sense of trust or caretaking. In Friday Nights at Guitar Center she explores the predominantly male customers of the musical instrument store via their impromptu in-store performances.

WHY: In Sandra Gottlieb’s Black and White series, she zeroes in on the micro-creativity of waves crashing on the same stretch of Atlantic seaboard shore, cast in high relief by the setting sun. Gottlieb’s pictures are conceptual in nature, capturing moments that are structured to make the observer feel small, accept that one moment is quickly overtaken by another, or that some momentary phenomena remain beyond our reach, in terms of human perception. This is why wise beachgoers come away from a day there weary but strangely calm, drained and yet somehow massaged to serene wistfulness by what to others seems like the irritating monotony of the ocean.

Coming direct from Colombia and transcending borders, Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto are the seminal gaita group that serve as an overflowing fountain of inspiration for artists throughout Latin America. Noted as being the root of cumbia, gaita music is an amalgamation of African and Amerindian traditions. Thanks in great part to Los Gaiteros, gaita music has become one of the most influential traditional musics in contemporary Colombian popular music today. Worldwide DJ extraordinaire Geko Jones (Que Bajo?! nyc) joins these living legends by spinning music inspired and influenced by Los Gaiteros in a dance party infusing live music featuring special guests.

WHY: Smokey Hormel’s résumé reads like a history of American popular music over the decades. He has worked closely with Beck, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond. His projects have included the Brazilian-influenced Smokey and Miho, as well as an ongoing tribute to Western swing. His latest endeavor is an idiosyncratic take on early Congolese rumba. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, African musicians looked to Cuba for inspiration. They recognized African roots in the music but were also captivated by its cosmopolitan aspect, which mirrored the evolution of their own culture. Using the electric guitar—fast becoming the symbol of urban culture—they forged a new hybrid that became an early soundtrack of decolonization. Hormel has hybridized the music further and taken it to the Americas for the second time. Keeping its pre-rock roots intact, he relies on a core sound of “wild guitars bursting through small amps afloat on a sea of hand drums and shakers.

WHY: A bedazzled creature builds a community by singing 24 concerts of the last 24 decades of popular music. A note: all audience members will be blindfolded for the duration of this ninety-minute concert. All the Rats & Rags is an electric new musical based on Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist and featuring music from Tim Fite’s 2008 album, Fair Ain’t Fair – a carnivalistic funhouse of soul, bluegrass and hip hop.Set in a future on the brink of a universe-altering revolutionary war, this sci-fi rock opera centers on an adorably clueless spy-bot named Twizt.

Axis Company’s episodic play Hospital, about the interior life of a person in a terminal coma, is something of a signature for the company, which has produced a new installment of the drama nearly every year since 1997. Conceived, written and directed by Randy Sharp the show is a summer downtown phenomenon beloved for its balance of horror, humor, and weirdness. The company will present the 11th production in the series July 8 – August 20.
While most audience members return to see multiple, if not all four, parts of the summer’s production, each episode is a self-contained short play that can be seen in isolation. The brief premise film that begins each year’s production—depicting the event that brought on the coma—is shown at the beginning of each performance.

The Booklyn Art Gallery is pleased to present Hunter/Gatherer, featuring works by Evan Robarts, Jason Kachadourian, Jessica Williams, Jon Bocksel and Scott Meyers.
Hunter/Gatherer includes artists with the common practice of borrowing both aesthetic inspirations and found objects from their local surroundings. These artists accumulate visual, physical, and conceptual source material from everyday encounters and observations. They manipulate materials and appropriate techniques from discarded objects, sign-painting and murals, printed ephemera, and urban architecture. While each artist has their own unique approach to collecting and manipulating, their work evokes similar appreciations for the found and overlooked. With their work combined, Hunter/Gatherer creates a personal map of the city they share and the scenery they encounter. The viewer is confronted by these recognizable, yet often ignored images and encouraged to take a second look when walking down the street.

Saint or devil, he endows a camera with the power not merely to kill people, but to ferret out sources of wealth. Cue for a flurry of treachery and greed, all casually swept under the carpet in a final pirouette. The neo-realist techniques don’t always mix too comfortably with the fantasy, making it an Ealing comedy with an edifying bent.

Who York is delighted to welcome Frazer to New York City, to perform his one man show – “The Time Traveling Scot”. There will also be a short Q&A, hosted by Ken Deep, from Doctor Who Podshock,, an autograph session (see details below) and possibly a surprise or two – as I hope you have come to expect from our previous SOLD OUT Who York events!!!
We have room for around 100 people in total, and seating will be first come first served in this small theatre. Mingling will still be possible in the lounge at the theatre, and in the auditorium itself before and after the show, making this a more intimate event than most conventions you may have attended.

Excited to announce this one. Pablo Malaurie’s voice is of the angels, and he’s come all the way from Argentina to play for you. It’s going to be beautiful, and glorious, and fun. Pablo has been widely praised for his fusion style (South American and Japanese in some cases), opened for Devandra Banhart and recently was a part of Catalin Mitulescu’s film “Loverboy.” He’s making the rounds in NY for the next couple days and we’re really pleased to have him.
Come help support not only our effort to see Volume II of The 22 Magazine in PRINT but also witness the brainchild of Valerie Kuehne, i.e. Supercoda @ Cafe Orwell, the gorgeous spectacle that goes on nearly every night (when does Valerie sleep?!?) and allows you to witness sounds that are otherworldly and stunning. Event Details: “Honesty Box” is a live amalgam of the old Facebook app “Honesty Box”and the Catholic confessional. A white person-sized box with a light blue banner, replicating the Facebook aesthetic, is built to confessional proportions, so that participants can step in, and speak with honesty and confidentiality to the performance artist. The performance artist offers witnessing, listening, infinite patience and guidance, as she and the participant meet in the space between the communal intimacy of the old-school confessional and the flirtatious anonymity of the Facebook application. Most of us crave a safe and honest conference, and have lost faith in both religious models and cheap apps. What does it mean to unburden and receive comfort? Find out!

Radio Happy Hour, a live variety show featuring a made-for-radio murder mystery sitcom, is kicking off the summer season with their first ever live taping at City Winery. The episode will feature two musical guests with both Sun Airway and rising indie-darlings Hank & Cupcakes. There will be murder. There will be music. And everyone will go home regretting something they’ve done. These bands, and another guest yet to be announced, will join Radio Happy Hour host Sam Osterhout, RHH regulars Robin Reed and Matt Skibiak, as well as RHH’s own Jim Ed Poole, Rich Bologna.
With the start of a new season it’s a perfect time to catch up on (or discover) past episodes of Radio Happy Hour through their podcast, such as the most recent episode, “The Tax Murderer,” featuring musical guest Franz Nicolay and comedian Arden Myrin. Or maybe it’s a good time to realize that you should never miss a show because you never know what’s going to happen. Cloud Cult could show up as a surprise guest in the middle of an episode featuring Norah Jones and comedian Gabe Liedman. This month we are starting our featured artists series with Brian Dettmer. Carver, collector, “book surgeon”, call him what you will, Dettmer’s work is layering of magnificent patience combined with a playful mind. His sculptures are reminiscent of futuristic depictions of urban and organic structures built out of the pre-history of encyclopedic and vintage texts. For most of the month of May we will be celebrating Dettmer’s work with special blog content, as well as many posts featuring his amazing creations. INTERVALS: FUTUREFARMERS, May 4–14, 2011 @Guggenheim
Futurefarmers, a San Francisco–based art collective, creates projects that are diverse both in terms of production and in their strategies of audience engagement. Recent projects include lunchboxes that incorporate hydrogen-producing algae, antiwar computer games, and the Urban Garden Registry (2008), an online map of unused land sites in San Francisco that are feasible for gardening and food production. If anything typifies a Futurefarmers project, it is the balance of both critical and optimistic thought and the use of both inventive and pragmatic design elements. In 2005 the group examined the vanishing art of shoemaking in the installation Shoelace Exchange; for the Guggenheim’s Intervals series the group further investigates this craft with a site-specific installation for the museum.
